Alice Eliza Day was born Oct. 29, 1854 in St. Lawrence County, New York. As a young child she came to Iowa locating in Jackson county for a few years. In 1860 the family moved to Fayette county on a farm about 5 miles northeast of Oelwein. In 1874 she was married to J. O. Sackville who passed away July 3rd, 1902. About 14 years ago Mrs. Sackville moved to town where she has resided until the day of her death, December 8, 1920.
Three children survive to mourn the loss of a faithful Christian mother, Mrs. Richard Smith, Oelwein; Mr. Ray Sackville, Oelwein, and Mrs. George Balluff of Clarion, Iowa. Two brothers and two sisters also survive, Wilson H. Day, George Day, Mrs. Fred Hough, all of Oelwein and Mrs. Gertrude MacDonald of Tacoma, Wash. There are four grandchildren.
Mrs. Sackville was a member of the Presbyterian church of this city and a faithful attendant upon its services. She delighted in meeting with the people of the church and congregation. Altho hindered oftentimes in the last year because of physical weakness yet she would make the effort to be present. She was a good Christian woman in her home and church and as such she will be greatly missed.
The last services were held from the Presbyterian church Friday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Geo. Korteling. There was a profusion of floral offering and a large number of relatives and friends were present to show affection and respect.
