Notes on Alice Baker

From the Oelwein, Fayette County, Iowa, Register, July 1938.


          Mrs. Alice Gregory, daughter of George W. and Sally Woodruff Baker, was born at Crown Point, N.Y., Sept. 27, 1860, and died at the E. L. Clegg home southeast of Fayette, Iowa, July 20, 1938, at the age of 77 years, 9 months and 23 days.
          When a young girl of five her parents moved to Iowa, locating in Farmersburg, Clayton county. Two years later they moved to a farm five and a half miles southeast of Fayette. Here she grew to womanhood. Her father died when she was 12. From that time she and her brother Frederick, helped the mother farm the homestead until she went to learn dressmaking in Fayette. She was continually engaged as dressmaker from that time until her marriage to William G. Gregory Feb. 19, 1894.
          After her marriage she and her husband settled on a farm two and a half miles east of Oelwein. In March 1900, they moved to Oelwein, where Mrs. Gregory had resided ever since. Since the death of her husband Dec. 5, 1913, she had been with her son, Carl.
          An established custom was an annual visit of a few weeks with her brother, Frederick, and his sons and daughters near Fayette. On July 1 of this year she again went for her usual visit. Wednesday evening her son, Carl, and family drove to the E. L. Clegg home, where his mother was staying. As the family left she remarked that she would be home Saturday. That night she became ill about 10:30, and her death occurred at 11:55.
          She is survived by her son, Carl, his wife, and their little son, John Carl; a step-son, Guy C. Gregory, and daughter, Isabelle; a step-daughter, Mrs. W. J. Davis and her daughters, Mrs. Murill Burke of San Francisco and Mrs. Blanche Storms of Oelwein; one brother Fred E. Baker of Fayette, and many other relatives.
          The funeral service was held in Oelwein Saturday, and interment was in Grand View cemetery at Fayette.
