ALLEN

Arthur Allen is first recorded as patenting 200 acres in 1649 between Lawnes Creek and Lower Chippoakes Creek in Surry County, Virginia.  In 1665 he built a brick house which his family was forced to abandon during the 1676 rebellion led by Nathaniel Bacon. This rebellion caused the burning of Jamestown. The Allen house is still standing and known as "Bacon's castle".  Arthur was married to Alice Tucker. He died in 1670.
Their children included a second Arthur Allen (1627-1710) who was given the title of Major.  He was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses in Jamestown and was elected Speaker.  He married Catherine Baker, the daughter of Capt. Lawrence Baker of Surry County.  His will was proved in Surry Court on September 5, 1710.
The third Arthur Allen (1749-1736) was the father of Mary Allen (1619-1734) who married Robert Box.  Robert's grandson Edward Allen Box, a Revolutionary patriot, was the father of Moses Box, a pioneer settler in Humphreys County, Tennessee. Moses' son Charles died as a Tennessee Confederate soldier in the Civil War
