GRANGE HALL CEMETERY
Polk Township
Section 18 - Township 66 - Range 40

A five acre tract of land for the Grange Hall Church and Cemetery was
donated to the Grangers by Nelson Orlando Hopkins, a pioneer landowner
living in the area.  The church was constructed in 1874 by Alexander
Washington Halliday and Leroy Cooper, at a cost of about twelve hundred
dollars.  All three of these men are buried in the Grange Hall Cemetery
adjacent to the church - Mr. Cooper in 1874, Mr. Hopkins in 1896 and Mr.
Halliday in 1909.  There were several burials in the cemetery before the
church was completed.  Early known burials were Matilda M. Williams,
March of 1868, Catharine Green, July of 1873, and Ruhama C. Herron,
November of 1873.  Other pioneer families represented in the cemetery
include Noblitt, Roberson, Benedict, Zuck, Burg, Boettner and Fosket.

The Grange Hall building and grounds were incorporated with the cemetery
on August 24, 1927.  Considerable restoration work on the church was
undertaken and completed in 1948 and other improvements to the building
and cemetery have been made in more recent years.  A grove of stately
pine trees grace the churchyard, providing shade and protection for this
unique old building.  In early days, the Grange was used for many
community affairs and was also utilized by the St. John's Church
congregation before their own church was constructed.  It has not been
used for church services or other community activities for many years,
however, it is opened each year for Memorial Day.  Refreshments are
served to the many families visiting the cemetery to decorate the graves
of their loved ones and donations are accepted for the continued
maintenance of this beautiful church and cemetery.
