Missouri info abt counties

I just found this out today..for those looking in Mo counties of ST. CHARLES, WARREN, MONTGOMERY CO

In 1805 Missouri became part of the Territory of Louisiana and remained so until 1812, when it became a territory in its
own name.  Missouri became a state in 1821.  The first census start in 1830. You would probably have to go to the Terr. of Louisiana  to find any record of your family in 1810. If they were in Warren in 1830, there is a census for that county.   Montgomery co. was formed in 1818 from St. Charles Co., St.Charles was an original district, Warren Co. was formed in 1833 from Montgomery Co.  Hope this is of help to you.

JAMES L. HOPKINS

Among the representative citizens of the county none are more deserving of   representation in this volume than James L. Hopkins, who has for many years been connected with its agricultural interests.  For over twenty years he has made his home in the Sunflower state, and throughout this long period he has ever borne his share in the work of development and improvement necessary to produce the wonderful change which has here taken place. He has remained true to its interests when the dark clouds of adversity have swept over the state, and as the years have passed by prosperity has abundantly rewarded his efforts, he being now the owner of a fine farm of two hundred and forty acres.
Mr. Hopkins was born in Putnam county, Missouri, in 1953, a son of James Laban Hopkins, a native of Kentucky, and a member of a prominent old family of the Bluegrass state. The mother of our subject bore the maiden name of Emily Wade, and was a daughter of Richard Wade. She was also a member of a prominent old southern family and prior to the trouble between the north and the south they owned many slaves, but on account of that conflict they removed to Missouri. The father of our subject passed away in middle life at the age; of fifty-one years and the mother reached the psalmist’s span of three score years and ten. Ten children were born unto this worthy couple, eight of whom are now living, namely Elijah, who was a soldier in the Civil War and is now a resident of Euporia, Kansas; Martha; Sarah; Elizabeth, ???? James L. ,our subject; Mary, John???, a resident of Unionville, Missouri; D..........? ?????? Oregon; ??????Missouri; a resident of ????ings, Oklahoma.
James L. Hopkins, the subject of this review, was reared in the state of his nativity, where he was early inured to the labors of field and meadow. After attaining to years of maturity he chose as a life occupation the vocation to which he had been reared and he was engaged in the tilling of the soil in Missouri until 1870, the year of his arrival in Kansas. Soon after coming to this state he secured a claim of two hundred and forty acres in Evans township, Kingman county, where he has added all the improvements found upon a well regulated farm, and is now the owner of one of the best and most productive properties in his adopted county. Two hundred acres of his place is planted with wheat which annually yields handsome returns.
Mr. Hopkins was married at the early age of nineteen years. Miss Margaret C. Franklin becoming his wife, and during the many years in which they have traveled life’s journey together she has ever proved to her husband a loving companion and helpmate. Ten children, four sons and six daughters, have blessed their union, namely: Mrs. Sarah Emily Summers, Jonathan Laban, Mrs. Lillie Terry, Oliver Tucker, Laura, Ralph, Albert, Nettie, Zena and Herbert. Mr. Hopkins is an active worker in the ranks of the Republican party and his last presidential vote was cast for McKinley. The cause of education also receives in him a warm friend, and for seventeen years he has served as a member of the school board. -- History of Central Kansas 1902

From HISTORY OF ST. CLAIR CO.
  Appleton Township

This is a vanity piece about a son of George Washington Hopkins who was born in GA and a grandson of Elijah Hopkins who was born in NC.

JOHN R. HOPKINS,

attorney, dealer in real estate and collecting agent, was born in Clinton County Kentucky, February 12, 1843. He lived there till 1850, when the family removed to St. Clair County, Missouri, and here John was principally reared, following the occupation of farming. In August, 1862, he enlisted in Company B., Sisteenth Missouri Regiment, Confederate States Army, and served till parolled at Shreveport, Louisiana, June 8, 1865.

He then went to Paris Texas, where he remained till November, 1865, when he returned to this county. In the spring of 1866 he made a trip to Montana Territory. After his return he resumed farming until 1868, when he embarked in the business at Chalk Level, there continuing till September, 1870. The succeeding two years he was in business in Lowry City, Missouri.

In 1872 he removed to Osceola and edited the St. Clair County Democrat for three years. Coming to Appleton City, Missouri, he engaged to the drug business under the firm name of F. McCrary & Co., and afterwards W. G. Browning & Co.,which in one year was changed to Hopkins & Woodberry. They sold out in June, 1881.

Mr. H. then, with his former partner, embarked in the wholesale cigar and tobacco business in Kansas City, and he is still interested in this business. In May, 1882, he returned to this city and has since been occupied in his present calling. He was married October 31, 1867, to Miss Martha J. Browning, a nataive of Missouri. They have four children: Susan A., Emma, Frank and Lizzie. During 1866 and 1867 he held the position of deputy sheriff. Mr. H. is a member of the Masonic fraternity and also of the A. O. U. W.

My grandfather, ALBERT WALTER HUGHES, was the second of eight sons and
one daughter of  Sonora Hopkins and Frances R. Hughes.  I find it
interesting to find a typically Spanish name in Mo., in the mid 1850's.

Who can help me on the parents of the above William H. Hopkins?
