William Wilson O'Hearn
ADMIRED EX-JUDGE O'HEARN DIES
Retired Circuit Court Judge William Wilson O'Hearn, who was as compassionate as he was firm on the bench, died of heart failure Thursday at St. Joseph Hospital. He was 82. Mr. O'Hearn presided for 24 years over Division 8 of Circuit Court, where friends and colleagues remembered him as soft-spoken, courteous and always on top of the law. ''I never heard a cross word from Judge O'Hearn in 50 years,'' said lawyer William Walsh, a longtime friend. ''He was very thorough and hardworking. He also had a grand Irish sense of humor.'' Mr. O'Hearn, an avid horseback rider, was a member of the Sierra Club, the American Bar Association, the Tennessee Bar Association and the Memphis Bar Association. He also was an amateur boxer. He was an officer of the Military Order of the World Wars and served as a major during World War II. Mr. O'Hearn also was a former assistant district attorney and worked as a part-time city attorney before winning his first of three eight-year terms in 1966. ''He was universally liked and respected by everyone in the Memphis legal community,'' said lawyer Charles Newman, president of the Memphis Bar Association. ''He was able in a way that's rare to keep complete control of his court, perform his duties as a judge and stay on top of the law while retaining the admiration and affections of all the lawyers in his court. It's another great loss for the legal community.''

Longtime Memphis lawyers and community activists Walter P. Armstrong Jr. and Lucius Burch Jr. also died this month. Circuit Court Clerk's Office manager Thad Lee, one of Mr. O'Hearn's former court clerks, died last month during a church league basketball game.

After Mr. O'Hearn retired in 1990, a group of lawyers and judges dedicated a portrait of him in a ceremony in his old courtroom. Mass will be said for Mr. O'Hearn at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Anne Catholic Church on Highland, where he was a communicant. Burial will be in Calvary. Canale Funeral Directors has charge. Mr. O'Hearn, the widower of Mary Ann Turley O'Hearn, leaves a daughter, Mary Ann O'Hearn Sawyer and a brother, John J. O'Hearn, both of Memphis, and three grandchildren. The family requests any memorials be sent to MIFA, Catholic Charities of Memphis or a charity of the donor's choice. [see also: Kathleen "Kitty" Mary (O'Hearn) Jones]

Michael Allen Ahern
A Hickory man was killed and two other persons injured as the result of a three-vehicle collission that occurred on Interstate 40 near Rock Barn Road exit at 8:50 a.m. on Tuesday. According to a report filed by Trooper Joe Gabel of the N.C. Highway Patrol, the three vehicles involved in the accident were a 1994 Pontiac driven by Michael Allen Ahern, 32, of Hickory, a 1989 Cadillac driven by Rita Gail Fox, 48, of Conover, and a 1985 Mack tractor-trailer truck driven by Robert Edward Whitson, 38, of Connelly Springs.

Ahern, an employee of Comm-Scope in Claremont, was pronounced dead at the scene. Ms. Fox, suffering "Code A" (serious) injuries, was transported to Catawba Memorial Hospital. And Whitson, a driver for Overnight Transportation, sustained "Code B" (not believed to be serious) injuries. He was transported to Frye Regional Medical Center, treated and then released.

A spokesperson for Highway Patrol said that the Ahern-driven Pontiac was travelling east at a high rate of speed when Ahern lost control in a driving rainstorm. The Pontiac crossed the median near Rock Barn Road, ran off the road on the left side, then back onto the road and slammed into the Fox-driven Cadiallac, travelling West on I-40. The two cars then collided with the tractor-trailer, travelling west. It took rescue workers more than an hour to pull Ahern, Ms. Fox, and Whitson from the wreckage and get the interstate reopened in the morning traffic rush. No charges were filed according to the trooper's report.

Kathy Ahern
47; was LPGA top golfer
PHOENIX — Kathy Ahern, a former child prodigy golfer who turned professional while still a teenager and who went on to become an LPGA champion, died Saturday. She was 47. The cause was complications from breast cancer, family members said. Ahern won three tournaments during her career on the Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour, including the 1972 LPGA Championship, one of the tour's four major championships. She also won the 1970 Southgate Open and the 1972 George Washington Classic. An accomplished amateur who won the 1964 Texas Public Links Championship at the age of 15, Ahern was just 17 when she joined the LPGA Tour after her senior year in high school in 1967. As a senior in Dallas, she also won the Texas Amateur and the Texas Junior and was runner-up in the U.S. Golf Association Junior Amateur. Before a series of injuries interrupted her playing career in the late 1970s, Ahern was regularly a factor on the tour. A good ball striker with an excellent short game, she was the runner-up in the 1971 LPGA Championship, then won the tournament the next year at Pleasant Valley Country Club. Although she competed rarely during the 1980s, Ahern remained in touch with the LPGA, sometimes assisting and coaching players, or caddying on tour for her close friend, Sherri Turner. In May of 1991, it was diagnosed that Ahern had breast cancer. She underwent a lumpectomy and a series of radiation treatments. The cancer metastasized in 1993, but Ahern remained an active supporter of the LPGA, attending a tournament as recently as the first week in June. "Kathy's courage and determination in the face of her illness is an inspiration to us all," LPGA Commissioner Jim Ritts said. "She was never deterred from showing her love of the LPGA, her family and friends while she was making a lasting impact on the lives of many." She is survived by her mother, Kay Ahern; and several sisters.
