William Francis Ahern Jr.
William Francis Ahern Jr. took time to smell the roses — and just about every other kind of flower imaginable. The longtime owner and operator of Ahern's Florist, founded in Akron and now located in Fairlawn, was known for his artistic flair when it came to floral arrangements. "Flowers were his life," said his wife of 59 years, Gertrude. Mr. Ahern died Wednesday at the couple's retirement home in Huron. He was 82. The Akron resident followed in the footsteps of his father, Frank, when he opened Flowerland florists on West Market Street in 1941. At the end of the 1950s, he merged Flowerland with the family business founded by his father, Ahern's Florist. "He very much enjoyed being in the flower business," said his son, Mike Ahern. "He had a sense of color, and sense of style." The younger Ahern has been running Ahern's Florist since his father retired about 16 years ago. Mr. Ahern made his mark on the industry as one of the first florists to grow and ship flowers by air in the 1950s. "They were not shipping flowers by air then," his son said. "They had to talk the airlines into it. Now, virtually everything comes in through air." Mr. Ahern also was active in trade groups and several community organizations, particularly the Kiwanis. Additionally, he served as a member of Akron's Human Relations Commission in the 1970s. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Hilary Catholic Church, 2750 W. Market St., Fairlawn, with the Rev. Gordon Yahner officiating. Interment is at Holy Cross Cemetery. Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. tomorrow at Billow funeral home, 85 N. Miller Road. His son will make the floral arrangements for the casket. "It's an honor," he said. "I think he'd like that."

Tom "Bud" Aherne
Over a period of 63 years, Limerick senior soccer has produced only a handful of full international players. There have, in fact, been 10. Al Finucane from Prospect was capped 11 times while playing with Limerick AFC, Johnny Gavin, originally from Janesboro, won seven caps as a Tottenham Hotspur player and Rory Keane of Swansea Town played four times in the green shirt of the Republic of Ireland. Joe Waters, who starred with Grimsby Town, won two caps while one cap each was won by goalkeepers Kevin Fitzpatrick and Willie Hayes, Sean Cusack, Johnny Walsh and Timmy Cunneen. One player, however, stands out as not alone the most capped Limerick player of all time but also one of the best. The late Tom "Bud" Aherne won 16 caps as a full-back while playing with Luton Town with whom he made 266 appearances. The club he joined from Belfast Celtic in 1947 thought very highly of the Limerick man. The fans adored him and he became one of the most formidable defenders in the English League at his peak. Even after his retirement, Bud never lost contact with his fans in his adopted Luton. He ran a very successful licensed premises in the town, never forgot his roots and was a regular visitor to his native Limerick. Two of his sisters, Lily, 85, and Delia, 90, still live in the northside of Limerick while one of his sons, Brian, is married and lives in Naas. His four other children, Patrick, Kathleen, Patricia and Maura all live in the Luton area in England. Bud Aherne enjoyed a healthy lifestyle up to the age of 77 years. Around that time he was diagnosed as having Alzheimer's Disease and he died on December 30, just a few weeks before his 81st birthday. For "Budda," sport was his life. He played competitive soccer until he had passed the 40 year milestone and up to his late 70s, had seldom been sick in his life. It was while playing with Belfast Celtic that he met his wife, Eileen. The couple were married in Belfast in 1949. A memorial Mass, arranged by Bud's sister-in-law, Irene, was celebrated in St Munchin's Church in Limerick by Fr Micheál Liston on Friday, February 4. It was a lovely occasion and the singing of Frances Duggan, accompanied by Molly Prendergast on the organ, enhanced the ceremony. The offertory gifts included a missal, a four-crested flag, made especially by Brian's wife, Bernie, depicting Ireland, Limerick AFC, Belfast Celtic and Luton Town; a football and a personal Mass brochure used on the day of Bud's funeral in Luton were brought to the altar. After Fr Liston spoke of Bud's prowess on the football field and the esteem in which he was held, Brian Aherne paid a glowing tribute to his dad's football and family commitments. Bud was a member of the famous Irish team of 1949 which beat England for the very first time at Goodison Park. Ironically, four of that side have now died from Alzheimer's Disease. Bud Aherne was one of the greats of Limerick soccer. He came through the tough school of juvenile and junior soccer in this city at a time when facilities were almost non-existent and proved himself in the competitive English League to be a player, sportsman and proud Limerickman of exceptional qualities. May he rest in peace.

Thomas "Bud" Aherne
Aherne grew up in Limerick and joined the Irish Army at 21. He joined Belfast Celtic, having previously played for Limerick, at the age of 26 and his football career blossomed late. In 1947 he was a member of the Celtic team that beat Glentoran 1-0 at Windsor Park, with Charlie Tully (later of Glasgow Celtic fame) scoring the only goal, to win the Irish Cup. It was to be the last time that Belfast Celtic were to win this trophy. Whilst with Celtic, he started to accumulate representative and international honours. He was chosen to play for the Northern Ireland Regional League against the League of Ireland in March 1946 - the first of 6 Inter-League honours that he would win before moving to England. In June of that year he made his full international debut for Republic of Ireland against Portugal in Lisbon and three months later he was capped for (Northern ) Ireland against England. He was to win 16 caps for the Republic and, most famously, he was a member of the team that beat England 2-0 at Goodison in 1949 - the first time that England had been beaten at home by a non United Kingdom country. He also gained four caps for (Northern) Ireland and one Victory international for them. He signed for Luton in March 1949 at the age of 30 and immediately established himself, not just as a regular in the Luton side but also in the hearts of the Luton fans who loved his wholehearted style. He had a storming season in 1949/50, when he put together a run of storming displays full of his own style of strength, resolution and shrewd positional play. He was a true full back, very difficult to beat and capable of tackling equally well with either foot. He also used the ball constructively. He went on to become a stalwart of the defence and he improved with age with his positional play and perfectly timed tackles compensating for any lack of speed. He was also a great volleyer of the ball and he was deputy captain to Syd Owen. He was ever-present in 1954/5 when Luton won promotion to the 1st Division and finished his career playing in the top flight of English soccer. He played 267 League games for the hatters, scoring 2 goals and 21 F.A. Cup games. Upon retirement, he spent two years in coaching but then drifted out of the game. He continued to live in Luton and worked in the automotive industry and was a keen bowls player and golfer. Amongst the 400 people who attended his requiem mass were many members of the Luton team of the 1950s.

Brian Ahern
It is with great sadness that I report the passing of Brian Ahern, a club and section member since 1966. Brian worked with the Department of Conservation in the Queenstown area office and was a very active mountaineer and mountain skier. His exploits included working with Ed Hillary on school projects in Nepal to working in Antarctica, a place he frequently visited and loved, our own Southern Alps also gave Brian many hours of pleasure and it was a great thrill to have him on a trip relating tales from his many enviable expeditions. Search and Rescue personnel will also mourn the loss of this totally dedicated person to saving lives in our mountainous regions. His expertise was respected the length and breadth of New Zealand in having worked so hard for the advancement of modern search and rescue techniques and for the many SAR operations he controlled in the Otago/Fiordland areas. Brian had a full, active and wonderful life. To his wife Rosemary and family, our sincere condolences. Now having "gone to top bunk" those who shared time with Brian are the better for it, we will miss this great man indeed.

Brian Ahern
Man of the Outdoors
One of the Department of Conservation's best known officers, Brian Ahern, loved the outdoors. Conservation Minister Sandra Lee summed up the feeling about Brian Ahern when she said: "The Department of Conservation and all of us are diminished by his death". Ms Lee was speaking at Mr Ahern's funeral in Wanaka on March 24, which was attended by more than 350 mourners. It was an open-air service on the shores of the lake, reflecting his absolute love for the outdoors. Brian Ahern was one of the Conservation Department's longest- serving and best-known officers. His work with DOC, and its predecessor, Lands and Survey, spanned nearly four decades. At the time of his death, he was based in Queenstown, managing commercial concessions in the area. He was search and rescue coordinator and chairman of the Wakatipu unit, and acting chairman of the Otago and Southland land search and rescue committee. Born in Wellington, Mr Ahern began his love of the outdoors by joining the Hutt Valley Tramping Club and the New Zealand Alpine Club. He began his career as a carpenter and joiner, which took him to the Antarctic for two summers to work as a husky trainer, maintenance man, and field worker at Scott Base in 1962. Between seasons, he returned to New Zealand to work as ski patrol supervisor at Mount Ruapehu. In the mid-1960s, Mr Ahern applied for a position based in Nepal, working without pay, where he helped Sir Edmund Hillary build the first hospital in Kunde for the Sherpas. He worked as an Outward Bound instructor before becoming senior ranger at the Fiordland National Park in 1969, became senior ranger at Franz Josef on the West Coast, and had a stint as assistant supervisor of national parks at head office in Wellington before becoming Mount Aspiring National Park senior ranger. With the formation of DOC in 1987, Mr Ahern's position moved to Queenstown. He was credited by several colleagues from Search and Rescue with forming a highly efficient unit in the Lakes District. In 1993, the Aherns made their permanent home in Wanaka. He had a strong bond with Te Runanga O Ngai Tahu and had many friends in the police force, who formed a guard of honour for him.

Tributes paid to Fine Gael TD Theresa Ahearn
Tributes have been paid to the Fine Gael TD for Tipperary South, Theresa Ahearn, who has died at a Dublin hospital after a long illness. Mrs Ahearn, who was 49, is survived by her husband and four sons. The Fine Gael Leader, John Bruton, described Mrs Ahearn's death as a tragedy for her family, her friends and her party. The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, said that she was respected on all sides of the political divide, and he had learned of her death with great sadness.

She died this morning in Mount Carmel Hospital in Dublin after a long illness. Originally from Golden in County Tipperary, Deputy Ahearn was first elected to Dáil Éireann in 1989. She was Spokesperson on Equality and Disabilities, on Energy and on Labour. She chaired the joint Oireachtas Committee on Women's Affairs from 1993 to 1995. Deputy Ahearn was also very active in local politics in her constituency of Tipperary South.

Her remains will be removed to Grange Parish Church near Clonmel on Friday at 7.00pm and her burial will take place after Mass at noon on Saturday in the local cemetery. Mrs Ahearn is the second deputy to die from Tipperary South in the course of the current Dáil. Labour's Michael Ferris died suddenly earlier this year.

Ms. Theresa Ahearn
The Tipperary South TD, Ms Theresa Ahearn, who died yesterday, will be remembered as a politician committed to equality issues and women's rights. She was the first woman organiser in the Fine Gael party and recalled a few years ago the amazement on the faces of those in her local cumann in Grange, near Clonmel, when she attended her first party meeting in the local hall in 1979. Her mother, who was determined her daughters would have a career and be independent, was a major influence on her life. Born near Golden, Co Tipperary in May 1951, she was the youngest of three boys and three girls. Her parents, John and Catherine Scott, were committed to Fine Gael and had both been Blueshirts. Ms Ahearn was educated at Presentation Convent, Cashel; University College Dublin, where the former Taoiseach and Fine Gael leader Dr Garret FitzGerald had been one of her tutors, and from which she graduated with a BA in History, Economics and Maths; and St Patrick's College Maynooth, where she received a Higher Diploma in Education. She taught maths at the Central Technical Institute in Clonmel until she was elected to the Dail in 1989. She met her husband, Liam Ahearn, a farmer, at a Macra na Feirme debate in 1973 and they married three years later. They set up home at Grange, Clonmel, and had four sons.

Ms Ahearn was director of elections for the Fine Gael party in South Tipperary in 1981 and for the two elections of 1982. It was in 1983 that she first entered public life. She was co-opted onto South Tipperary County Council and was a member of the local authority for six years before being elected a Fine Gael TD on her first attempt in 1989. She found life as a TD hard but interesting, and missed her family while in Dublin. She was committed to equality issues and chaired the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Women's Rights from 1993 to 1995. Ms Ahearn was a regular contributor to Dail debates and in March criticised the Government for its lack of action in responding to a two-year-old report on tackling violence against women. She had been Fine Gael spokesperson on equality and disabilities since 1997, frontbench spokesperson on Energy from 1992 to 1993 and on Labour in 1992 and spokeswoman on women's affairs between 1993 and 1995. She also served on a number of other Oireachtas committees.

Theresa (Scott) Ahearn
Theresa Ahearn, who died on September 20th aged 51, caused a major surprise when she emerged on the national political scene in 1989. Not only was she a woman TD for the rural Tipperary South constituency, at a time when women politicians were still attempting to establish themselves in the Dáil, but in addition she had unseated the long-serving sitting Fine Gael TD - Brendan Griffin. She went on to make her mark in a number of frontbench positions, and, had she lived, would almost certainly have served in ministerial office if Fine Gael returned to power.
Theresa Ahearn was one of a new breed of female politicians in the 1990s, committed to a feminist agenda of equality, but also concerned with a wide range of social and economic issues. She was an assiduous constituency worker and an impressive Dáil speaker, using public speaking skills nurtured while a member of Macra na Feirme.
She was born Theresa Scott, from Golden, Co Tipperary, the youngest of three boys and three girls. Her parents, John and Catherine Scott, were farmers and strong supporters of Fine Gael with a background of involvement in the Blueshirts. Michael Collins was a family hero. Theresa Ahearn was the product of a tranquil, Catholic Church-dominated rural life of the late 1950s and early 1960s, which she would later recall as secure but with the disadvantage of being unquestioning. Her mother believed her daughters should have careers, which they would retain when married, and Theresa Ahearn became a teacher after graduating from UCD with a BA in history, economics and mathematics.
She taught in Navan while studying for her Higher Diploma in Education in St Patrick's College, Maynooth, before returning to Tipperary to teach mathematics at the Central Technical School in Clonmel. She joined Macra na Feirme, mainly because she loved debating, and she met her husband, Liam Ahearn, a farmer from Grange, near Clonmel, at a debate in the local hall in Bansha, Co Tipperary, in December, 1973. They were married three years later. When she thought of joining a political party, it was, inevitably, Fine Gael. Apart from her family background, she was impressed by Dr Garret FitzGerald, who had been her tutor in UCD. She attended her first party meeting in the local hall in Grange, in 1979, and was soon a constituency officer.
The following year, she sought a seat on the Fine Gael national executive, a decision which led to what Liam Ahearn described in an interview with The Irish Times in 1989 as "one of the wickedest campaigns that ever hit south Tipperary".
In the same interview, Theresa Ahearn recalled: "The reception was warm for me as long as I was doing the secretarial work, letterwriting and things like that. But I also began to organise functions, invite guest speakers - things that secretaries had never done in the past."
She won a seat on the executive, with two votes to spare, and went on to become constituency organiser. She was co-opted to Tipperary South Riding County Council in 1983, retaining her seat in the 1985 local elections. In January 1989, she broke with tradition and announced that she intended seeking the Fine Gael nomination for the next general election, which came in June of that year. The six-month campaign paid off: she headed the poll at the selection convention and went on to win a seat, dislodging the sitting Fine Gael TD, Brendan Griffin. She was reelected at every subsequent general election.
Theresa Ahearn found her early days in Leinster House traumatic. In an interview with RTÉ's political correspondent, Una Claffey, for the 1993 book, The Women Who Won, she recalled: "I just couldn't describe to you the loneliness of being in Leinster House when I came here first. The isolation. You'd have to experience it to understand it. One of the main difficulties is finding out what the place is all about. You just have to learn by yourself."
Over the years, Theresa Ahearn was party spokeswoman on energy, labour, women's affairs, women's rights, equality and disabilities. She was chairwoman of the Oireachtas Committee on Women's Rights between 1993 and 1995, and also served on the foreign affairs and procedure and privileges committees. She might have achieved ministerial office in 1994, when the Rainbow Government took over, had she not supported an earlier unsuccessful leadership heave against John Bruton. She later healed the rift with the party leader.
Despite bouts of ill-health in recent years, Theresa Ahearn remained politically active until her final illness. A non-drinker, she rarely socialised with her colleagues.
