Deaths of Famine Immigrants

The following was extracted from A Register of Deceased Persons: At Sea and on Grosse Île in 1847 by André Charbonneau and Doris Drolet-Dubé.

Died in Hospital and Buried on Grosse Ile
  • Bridget Ahern, age 40, arrived on the Erin's Queen from Liverpool, England, died July 25-31, 1847. Erin's Queen sailed from Liverpool June 1, arrived Quebec July 23,1847 carrying 518 passengers, of whom 136 died.
  • Bridget Ahern, age 21, arrived on the Emily from Cork, Ireland, died August 1-7, 1847. The Emily sailed from Cork May 12, arrived Quebec July 6, 1847, carrying 115 passengers, of whom 15 died.
  • David Hearn, age 25, arrived on the Avon from Cork, Ireland, died September 12-18, 1847. The Avon sailed from Cork May 19, arrived Quebec July 12 and was in quarantine until July 26, 1847. It carried 552 passengers, of whom 137 died at sea, 26 died in quarantine aboard the ship and 84 died in hospital at Grosse Île, a total of 247.
  • John Ahern, age 30, arrived on the Naomi from Liverpool, England, died August 8-14 1847. The Naomi sailed from Liverpool June 15, arrived August 10, 1847, carrying 334 passengers, of whom 196 died.
Died at Sea and Buried on Grosse Ile
Margaret Ahern, age 62, died on the Aberdeen which left Liverpool, England on May 1, 1847 and arrived June 13, 1847 with 411 passengers, of whom 61 died.

The following was extracted from Flight From Famine; The Coming of the Irish to Canada by: Donald McKay. While the year is not given, it may have been around 1823. The immigrants from this group settled in the Ottawa Valley area around Prescott.

"John and Bridget Ahearn from Castletownroche [County Cork] lost their three month old daughter, Jane, to smallpox on July 29 and a week later the twenty-seven year old mother died leaving the husband with a three year old son."
