William Shortreed
Gothland Cemetery
Beresford, Union County, South Dakota

"Pvt Co C 27 Iowa Inf. Civil War"
(Note the roster says Co. A)
We visited The Gothland Cemetery located near Beresford, Union County, South Dakota, as it was on our way back to Sioux Falls. Although my wife has been to Beresford many times, she was not aware of the Gothland Cemetery. It is a small Cemetery and although still active, apparently not used too much anymore.
I found William Shortreed's grave at the west end of the cemetery. I also took a picture of his wife's gravestone as well. Both graves are overshadowed by a large spruce tree that cuts out much of the light; however, the pictures came out good.There was one grave further west between Shortreed's and the fence. That grave is also a Civil War veteran, from a Minnesota regiment. Ben K. Sager
