Virtual Cemetery for the 27th Iowa on Find a Grave

Iowa Civil War Monuments Has photographs of Civil War Monuments in Iowa.

NOTE: If I have a photo of the tombstone there is a tombstone icon. Click on the icon to see the photo. The soldier's name is linked to the Roster.

Please also note: If a tombstone picture was submitted to me, I may have a higher quality picture. I normally crop and resize the photo for the website. If you are interested in a particular cemetery photo, let me know and I'll check to see what I have.

This page has been compiled from many different sources. I have searched cemetery listings and other sources online, and information submitted by descendants (including biographies and obituaries). I have taken a few of the tombstone photos myself, but most have either been submitted or found online. Many tombstone photos have been submitted by Steve Hanken, who is working on a project of photographing and uploading Civil War tombstone photos. Steve, thank you, so much, for your interest in the 27th.

I obtained a lot of cemetery locations from Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Quite a few records from their website only listed the cemetery and maybe the year of death. After I got the cemetery location, I researched the soldier to determine dates of birth and death, widow, tombstone photos, etc. Any notes that are added to a record are done by me (Elaine Johnson - ejj). If I found discrepancies between what I found on the Sons of Union Veterans website and other sources, I noted it.

I have tried to be very careful in compiling this page, but unfortunately, I cannot verify every date. I have had to rely on the information I have found. The information in ( ) is not necessarily what is on the tombstone. It could be information that has been compiled from other sources. Some of the dates (year of birth) were computed using the age of the solider when he enlisted. I have tried to note discrepancies that I found. I found several references to soldiers that I do not find in the Rosters. I have included them here and on the alphabetical roster, but not on the actual rosters.

Abbott, Hiram - Co. C - Evergreen Cemetery Brainard, Crow Wing County, Minnesota

    (Dec 15, 1831 - Apr 2, 1912)

(Note: some records show name as Abbot. Headstone shows Abbott.) I found this note with a newspaper photo of his tombstone: Civil War Veterans have their own little area in Brainard's Evergreen Cemetery. Originally buried in the Old Crow Wing Cemetery, the bodies were exhumed in 1925 and moved to Evergreen by order of the War Department (Daily Dispatch Color Photo by Steve Kohls).

  • tombstone icon

Allen, Samuel S - Co. G - Stillwater Cemetery - Orchard, Mitchell County, Iowa.

    (June 14, 1840 - Aug. 11, 1863).

On Find A Grave, there is a Samuel G. Allen born June 14, 1840, died Aug. 11, 1864 that is buried in Stillwater Cemetery, Orchard, Mitchell County, Iowa. A note said he died during the Civil War. I have requested a photo of his tombstone to see if it is the right one. (Note WPA Records and an online listing for Stillwater Cemetery list a Samuel S. Allen (1840 - Aug. 11, 1863, buried in Stillwater Cemetery, East Lincoln Township, Mitchell County. I highly suspect that it is him. His father, David Godfrey Allen(born 1801, died Aug. 14, 1875), is buried in the same cemetery.).

UPDATE: 5/17/2012: The photo has been posted. It clearly says Samuel S. Allen (Not G) and the date of death on the tombstone is Aug. 11, 1863, age 23 y, 1 mo. 28 d. Unfortunately, it does not mention the 27th Iowa. So while I am not 100% sure this is the right Samuel S. Allen, I am still pretty sure. I am going to list it here. Maybe I will be able to confirm 100% at some point. I have requested a correction to his Find a Grave memorial. (middle initial and year of death)

  • Anderson, Andrew G - Co. B - Center Baptist Cemetery, Center Township, Allamakee County, Iowa

    (Aug. 15, 1824 - Sept. 26, 1896 GR Co B IA 27 Inf)

(Note: this soldier was identified in the cemetery listing as being in IA 27. I do not find him on the roster - ejj. There is a tombstone photo, but it does not reflect service with the 27th Iowa (or any other Civil War Unit). However, there are several other men from Company B that are buried in the same cemetery. (Andrew W. Hector/Hactor, Olaf G. Anderson and John A. Peterson). None of them have the same date of birth and death, but all are Norwegian. The biography of Olaf G. Anderson said he was the brother of Andrew Anderson.

I did find an Andrew Anderson that was in the 12th Iowa, but could not find an Andrew Anderson in the 27th Iowa. (Olaf G. Anderson did transfer to the 12th Iowa at the end of the war--maybe there was some discussion about the brothers serving in the same Regiment and someone assumed it was the 27th). I also found him on the 1895 Iowa State Census, age 68, in Allamakee County. Normally the 1895 census shows Civil War service and which unit the soldier was in. Andrew's information on this section was blank

(His tombstone indicates that he served with Co. D, 27th ILL.  That is clearly an error.  Note there is a year discrepancy in his year of birth. Tombstone information says 1842. Everything else indicates 1841)

I requested a photo through FindaGrave. This was their response:

I searched the entire cemetery and could not find the grave. Specifically I searched both sections and did not find this grave, did find many headstones that were so worn down that you could no longer read them, it is most likely one of those.

Another volunteer stated: There is another Buckhorn cemetery down from the new one. Keep on FM 1456 traveling away Bellville, and take a left on Korthauer rd go to Samuel chapel -- there is a number 9514 on the building.

But when I requested a photo through Find a Grave, I got a response that said "There are no "Bucks" buried in Elmwood Cemetery"

I then found a cemetery listing for Westside Cemetery which listed both William and Matilda Buck. I have requested a photo.

    (1830 - Dec 22, 1862.)

Note: all online family trees list him as being buried in the above cemetery. I was contacted by Joni Hindman, a descendant through his daughter Catherine. She said she has a letter in her possession written by 27th Iowa Chaplin D. N. Bordwell that says "he was buried "just beside the rail road about three quarters of a mile north of the Tallahatchie river...."

I can see several possibilities: (1) The one in Linn County is a memorial. (2) He was moved after the war was over (3), the one in Linn County is mistake because that is where his wife was buried. There may be another explanation, but those are the ones that come to my mind."

I requested a photo through Find a Grave. They reported that they walked the cemetery twice and did not find a grave for him.

Magnolia Cemetery may not be correct. The Pension Index Record shows that he died Jan. 21, 1920 in Modale, Iowa. Modale is in Harrison County. I initally thought the J. Fitzpatrick listed in the WPA records was him. But the Find a Grave Memorial lists his place of burial as "Unknown". The James Fitzpatrick buried at Magnolia Cemetery appears to be his son born in 1872.

He filed for a pension on April 21, 1880 and per the US Civil War Soldiers Records died Feb. 10, 1905. There is a death record for Lucius L. Green with that date in St. Croix County, Wisconsin. I have not been able to determine where he is buried. I have listed this here just in case. The tombstone photo was no help. I did question the Find a Grave volunteer that took the photo. Source of DOD was Iowa Civil War Solider Burial Records. They had a a DOB of 1834. 1834 matches the Roster. The photo is from Grundy County.

I also found the cemetery record below. Based on the date of birth for this one, I feel certain that it is an error. But (because he is identified as being in the 27th Iowa) I will include it anyway. There is a biography on the Allamakee website for Henry Harris born 1818 in Great Britain. I suspect the information below is for him - and they got the two mixed up. Henry Harris of the 27th was in Allamakee county for many years, but then moved to Grundy county. I notified the Allamakee County Coordinator and she made a note of it on the website.

William H. Harrison - Old Oak Hill Cemetery, Lansing Township, Allamakee County, Iowa

I don't know the explanation for for the second cemetery listing, other than he used to live in Allamakee County. I sent a correction to the county coordinator for Allamakee County.

(Note: I do not find this soldier in the Rosters - ejj - and there is no one named Nicholas in Company I.)

The only one I could find that served in the Civil War was a Nicholas Munshower that served with Co E, 3rd Regiment California. He was on the 1860 census in Santa Clara, California, aged 35, born Pennsylvania. (that would make his year of birth about 1825). There was a single man named Nicholas Monshower on the 1880 Census in Jefferson Allamakee County, Iowa. He was born about 1820 in Pennsylvania. They could be the same person, but I can find no connection to the 27th Iowa. I have requested a photo of his tombstone to see if it shows anything.

I requested a photo from Find a Grave. I got the following response:

"Cemetery office has no record of this person. I spoke with the office of the National Cemetery and they confirmed that John Robbins, d. 1864, is NOT at the Rock Island National Cemetery or the Confederate Cemetery. "

Since the information came from the roster, I will leave this here -- but there is the possibility he is not buried in this cemetery. For some reason I had not noticed this before I got the reply back from Find a Grave-- But the roster says he died at Davenport, Iowa. WHY would he have been buried at Rock Island Cemetery??

    (June 6, 1839 - Feb. 19, 1898)

Per his obituary he was buried in "West Buffalo Cemetery". I could not find a cemetery by that name. I did find a reference to Spangler Cemetery (which is in Buffalo Township, Buchanan County). I wonder if that is where he is buried? The obit does not say what county the Cemetery was in -- But I do note that Fayette and Buchanan Counties are neighboring counties.

This may not be the right Benjamin Stanley. The tombstone on Find a Grave shows Co. K, 1 IA Cav. Of course, it is possible that he joined another unit after he was rejected by the 27th Iowa. Benjamin G. Stanley enlisted in Co. K, Iowa 1st Cavalry on Feb. 27, 1864. from Rossville, Iowa. Mustered out on May 28, 1865 at Memphis Tennessee. If this is him, it is odd that the Cemetery listing shows 27th Iowa (NOT 1 IA Cav).

  • Stenger, Emil - Montrose Cemetery, Cook County, IL

    (? - Jan 1, 1886)

The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War had his name listed as Emil Stengler buried in Waldheim Cemetery, Cook County, Illinois. I initially questioned this one. There is no STENGLER in the 27th Iowa. There is an Emil Stangier in Co. B -- Is this him?)

Find a Grave has an Emil Stenger listed with the DOB 1816 and DOD Jan. 1, 1886. Buried in Forest Home Cemetery (AKA Waldheim German Cemetery). Per the Roster, Emil Stangier of Company B, should have been born about 1828. So I was still not sure this was him, in spite of what the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War had.

The Roll of Honor, Containing the Names of Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines of All the Wars of Our Country Who Are Buried in the Cemeteries of Cook County by Eli Robert Lewis (Chicago, Ill.: Printing Products Corp., 1922) ACPL Call Number 973.001 IL6L says Emil Stenger is buried in Waldheim Cemetery, died January 1, 1886, Co. A, 27 Iowa Inf.

His widow Fredericka Stangier filed for a pension on July 19, 1886 in Illinois. So in spite of the discrepancies (age and company), I think this is him.

I requested a photo of his tombstone through Find a Grave and got this response: "This person, although originally buried at Waldheim German Cemetery, was moved to Montrose Cemetery on or about March 15, 1909. Please move this memorial to that cemetery."

When I checked Montrose Cemetery I found that Fredricka Stenger died Feb. 21, 1909 and is also buried in Montrose Cemetery. So it appears that his body was moved after she died.

NOTE: Everything that I had previously found said he died Dec. 5, 1882 and was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Mitchell County, Iowa. Find a Grave, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and the Mitchell County USGENWEB Cemetery listing for Oak Grove Cemetery all show this information. However, I believe that is an error. They are showing the identical birth and death dates for both him and his first wife Almira Tucker (born May 6, 1830 and died Dec. 5, 1882). I believe the dates are for his wife only.

By researching the Pension Index Records, 1890 Veterans Census, Death Records and Cemetery Records for Hubbard County, Minnesota, I believe that I have determined that the information listed above for Hubbard County, Minnesota is correct.
