HOW TO SUBSCRIBE / UNSUBSCRIBE:

To Subscribe -   Use the "request" addresses listed below to subscribe. Leave the SUBJECT field EMPTY. and in the body of the message type one word: "subscribe" (without the quotation marks).

You have the option to receive messages in the MAIL MODE "L" or DIGEST MODE "D".   List mode delivers messages individually as they are received by the server. Digest mode sends about one email a day and includes all postings for that day.   List mode is more efficient for deleting and saving individual messages as they arrive; however, some prefer to receive just one email a day, which includes the multiple messages. It is very simple to switch to the DIGEST MODE. Use the above email addresses and change the "L" to a "D". The instructions you receive upon subscribing will also tell you how to go about the switch if you decide at a later date you would prefer the DIGEST mode.

To Unsubscribe - To be removed from the mail list, send your request to the same address to which you subscribed (see above). Follow the same instructions including one word in the body of the message: "unsubscribe" (no quotation marks).

GUIDELINES:

Welcome!  -  After subscribing to the mail list you will receive an acknowledgment message from the List Owner. We suggest that you save this message for future reference.  The object of these mail lists is to help further research on the Kohler, Kaylor, & Kaler surnames. We invite all list members to enjoy themselves while hopefully making useful contacts and/or learning about resources available online and off. If at any time you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the List Owner.

How to Post a Query -

  • Use the SUBJECT line of the email to let others know what your posting is aobut. Including your ancestor's name and location and/or time frame would be helpful, i.e. "Jacob Kohler - 1850s NY" or "Daniel Kaler - Pennsylvania".

  • In the BODY of the message highlight important names with CAPITAL letters - but only for their names. As mentioned above, time period and location are very important in helping the reader determine if they may have any information on the people you are researching. Include this information in your post. Even an approximate date is better than no date at all.

  • Always ask yourself, what is the simplest and clearest way to post my message? What will make it easier to read? While it is essential to include the key points of information, it is also a good idea to keep your posting brief. People will not always take time to read a long and difficult to follow message. If someone is interested in that particular topic, they can email you for more information. Look to other postings on the list for good examples.

How to Reply to a Message -

  • If you would like to reply to the person who sent the message, and not to the list at large, click "Reply". If you would like the posting to go to the list at large as well, click "Reply to All".

  • Many browsers allow you to include a copy of the message you are replying to. Please DO NOT repeat entire messages - it uses up a lot of archive space. If you have your browser set to automatically include the original message, please delete the bulk of it of the old message(s) before sending to the list. Retain only the portions to which you are specifically replying.

  • If you are using Digest mode (explained below) please note that the SUBJECT line simply lists the DIGEST #, i.e. KALER-D Digest V34 #191. This does not tell the reader what the posting is about. Delete the Digest # information and type in the actual topic of the message you are sending or to which you are replying.

Courtesy - Occasionally people may type something that offends another list member   It happens on just about every list at one time or another.  This can sometimes be avoided if we think about "how" we phrase something before we post it.  If you disagree with a list member, please post to them directly, or just delete their message altogether.  Please do NOT involve the entire list, as this takes time away from the main reason we are here: genealogy :) If a problem persists, please contact the List Owner.

Mary Ann Kaylor passed along the following from the GEN-HUMOR mail list. Though humorous indeed, it also contains some very good advice regarding email:

The Ten Commandments of Email
- Anonymous -
  • Thou shalt include a clear and specific subject line.
  • Thou shalt edit any quoted text down to the minimum thou needest.
  • Thou shalt read thine own message thrice before sendest it.
  • Thou shalt ponder how thy recipient might react to thy message.
  • Thou shalt check thy spelling and thy grammar.
  • Thou shalt not curse, flame, spam or USE all CAPS.
  • Thou shalt not forward any chain letter.
  • Thou shalt not rely on the privacy of email, especially from work.
  • Thou shalt not use email for any illegal or unethical purpose.
  • When in doubt, save thy message overnight and reread it in the light of the dawn.

  • And, the Gold Rule of email:
That which thou findest hateful to receive, sendest thou not unto others.

Mail List Archives:
Wonder if a topic of interest to you has appeared in an earlier email to the list? Check the RootsWeb archives:
  • Go to the RootsWeb Mailing Lists -- Interactive Search.
  • For name of list, type the name of the list, i.e. KOEHLER or KAYLOR
  • When the next page opens, type key words or surnames in the Query box.
  • An Operation Summary page will list the number of matching records for your query, if any. Entries list the subject of the message and allow you to view the message.
Recently Marc Nozell and RootsWeb have been working to create a threaded archive that allows you to type in a subject and canvass all of the mail lists at one time. For more information and to learn how you can access these archives visit the RootsWeb archives.
