  • As with many surnames, there are a variety of spellings for "Buchele". The 1860 City of Peoria Census spells the last name "Bechley" which would seem to reflect the sound of the umlauted "u" - "Büchele". The umlauted "u" is sometimes spelled "ue", and we have seen the name spelled. "Buechele. In fact, the Civil War military and pension records for William Buchele (1841-1915) and Anton Buchele (1844?-1865) use the spelling "Buechele".

Charles and Sophie's monument in St. Joseph Cemetery is inscribed "Buechele", although their children adopted the "Buchele" spelling.

  • According to Mary Jacobs Colgan, Hieronymous (also spelled Hieronimous) and Frances left Ettenheim, Baden on the Rhine, Germany, in 1853 journeying across the northern part of France to the port city of Le Havre. On December 17, 1853 they embarked on the Eastern Queen. The family arrived in News Orleans on January 28, 1854. The ship's manifest lists Hieronymous and Frances with three of their four sons: Carl, William, and Anton. The family arrived in Peoria in May 5, 1854.

Mary is the daughter of Helen Buchele Jacobs. Mary, who is interested in both genealogy and the Civil War, has been a big help in providing a variety of information about the Bucheles, as well as the town of Peoria, Illinois.

  • Theresia/Therese, is listed with Hieronimous in the City of Peoria 1860 Federal Census, along with Charles, Adolph, Caroline and Frances. Mary Jacobs Colgan found Theresia listed as "widow of Hieronymous Buchele" in the 1863 and 1865 City of Peoria directory. Theresia may have been widowed before by a Mr. Jungling. Mary located a Frances Buchele, age 28, listed in a 1888 census conducted for City of Peoria. Beyond this we know very little.

  • John Lancaster Buchele was a member of the Peoria Fire Department, serving as Fire Chief during the 1930s and 1940s. I would like to learn more about the Fire Department, especially during the first part of the twentieth century.
