CHURCHES of BALTIMORE

Family records from the Maryland State Archives indicated that several of our family branches were affiliated with the following churches:   FIRST REFORMED CHURCH OF BALTIMORE,   ZION LUTHERAN,   OLD OTTERBEIN,  and  SECOND PRESBYTERIAN.   A 1861 newspaper clipping in Sophia Kaylor Keehne's family bible reported the 25th anniversary of Rev. Dr. Heiner's pastorate for the SECOND STREET GERMAN REFORMED CHURCH.   Checking local directories I could not find any listings for First Reformed Church or Second Street German Reformed. Trying to locate Zion Lutheran turned up several possibilities.   It did not take long to discover that the history of some Baltimore churches is quite complex.

In delving into the history of these churches, Dianne Russell, a researcher at The Evangelical and Reformed Historical Society, has been a tremendous help.   The material she shared included insight into a number of issues, from learning that Old Otterbein was founded by members of the First Reformed Church, who seceded from that congregation, to finding out the reason why the First Reformed Church moved from Second Street after 71 years at that location. I also want to thank Olga Hutchins for her help with Zion Lutheran Church, and to many on the Baltimore mail list who have helped guide me in the right direction.

According to the Maryland Historical Society web site the reference library has an extensive index of Maryland church records births, baptisms and marriages. Here are two specific resources that could be useful in tracking down church records:

  • CHURCH RECORD FILE - a guide to locating Maryland church records:  "covers all periods, all denominations, and all known repositories or records. Kept in ring binders on a book truck near the reference desk."
  • NORRIS HARRIS CHURCH REGISTER INDEX - file cards arranged alphabetically by surname, providing genealogical information from part of the society's collection of church records. It is recommened that you check the Church Record Index for records which have not been copied, as well as the Manuscriptis Division of the library.
The Kanely reference books listed above would also be available at the MHS. The Directory of Ministers and the Maryland Churches They Served 1634 - 1990 is particularly helpful if you have the county/city marriage record or a newspaper notice listing the name of the minister who officiated a wedding but do not know the church/denomination where a couple was married.
