Jonathan Elwell and Elizabeth (RANEY) moved to Johnson Co, IN. abt 1830. They divorced in 1835. Samuel served in the 9th VA. Regiment; Capt. Wm HENDERSON's Company April 10, 1776-1779, was in battles of Germantown and Monmouth NJ, prob. others. The Pension Applications show a Mary JOHNSON applied for Samuel's pension benefits after he died in 1799. She presented an affidavit that they were married after the war and had children Thomas and John. But this application # 3930 was denied. | Thomas GARRISON b. 8 May 1745 “in or near Baltimore, MD.” d. 7 Jan. 1798 on family farm near Flat Creek, Buncombe Co., NC and (according to the family’s oral tradition is buried on that property) m. bef. 1768 ? Comfort ROBERTS. He is listed on the 1789 Virginia Tax Census as living on his property near Rock Castle Creek in Henry Co. The family was still in this area until about 1793 when their daughter Mary was married to Henry HARRIS. Thomas and Comfort came to Buncombe Co., NC abt 1795, when he appears in the Buncombe Co. Deed Index, buying 100 acres of land from a Jonathan BLEVINS. According to a family history by his grandson, he died there in 1798 of appendicitis. Thomas and Comfort had a total of nine children. Most of them list their birthplace as Virginia in census records that include this information. Some sources list Thomas as the son of Isaac and Martha GARRISON of Surry co., NC. However the Y-DNA of the Isaac GARRISON descendant’s line is haplogroup R1B1. The Thomas GARRISON descendants have the E1B1B1 haplogroup. Family Tree DNA shows a close relation to descendants of John Wesley GARRISON of Davison Co. NC. Also the descendants of Buckner GARRISON (of Texas Co. MO.) and members of the Stephan GARRISON family (of SC) are of the same E1B1B1 group. While I have a fair amount of information on Thomas’ nine children and their descendant branches, I have no information on Thomas’ parents and how he connects with the other DNA matching families.
