Welcome to Woody Gap Here you will find a collection of text, images and resources for our WOODY family. We are a proud family with deep, healthy roots. The seeds from whence those roots came were sown in the early 17th century, from the very beginning of American history. The WOODY family has since blossomed and spread our many branches of rich heritage from the Atlantic to the Pacific and beyond. Woody Gap is a place in the North Georgia Mountains where Lumpkin and Union counties touch. The Appalachian Trail crosses here at an elevation of 3,164 feet above sea level. The trails southern end at Springer Mountain is 20 miles to the west of Woody Gap and the northern end of the Appalachian Trail is 2,138 miles to the north at Mount Katahdin, Maine. The ridge line at Woody Gap is also the divide between the Tennessee River and Etowah River drainage's. This ridgeline pass or gap in the Blue Mountains just east of Black Mountain was named in memory of the Honorable John WOODY, one time postmaster of Dahlonega, Georgia. Mr. WOODY lived at the base of the Blue Ridge and cleared a field in the gap that bears his name. We hope you enjoy what you see here and encourage you to stop by often and stay as long as you like.
