WILL ATTEMPT TO CLEAR CEMETERY RECORDS
An effort to ascertain ownership of deeded lots in the
Butte cemetery in the Van Horn district is being made by Mrs. Max L. Moore,
to complete their records which have been kept by her father, the late Virgil
Winchell, for many years. Jerome Winchell, who homesteaded the tract on the
East Side in the early 60's, was buried there with members of his family,
the Odell, Neal and Turner families. His son, Virgil Winchell, deeded the
cemetery to the public about 1896.
The Butte Cemetery Association was organized in 1889,
the first officers being B.A. Turner, Samuel Harbison and John Monroe, the
latter secretary. Trustees where R.E. Harbison, Hans Lage and Wm. Odell.
In 1892 the tract was surveyed and a number of lots sold. Between 1892 and
1900 44 different persons bought whole or part lots. Since that time records
are incomplete.
