“White Salmon In Brief”

In Memoriam -- Like the following of the autumn leaf, like the passing of the silent shadow, our beloved brother pioneer, S.S. Whitcomb, has been taken from us, and his kind and cheerful ways and his good qualities have become but a memory to us who knew and loved him.
In his death the Pioneers have suffered a great loss, but while we sorrow for the departed Pioneer, we do not forget the deeper sorrow of the wife and family who mourn the loss of one whose unselfish heart and willing hands were ever ready at their call.  Therefore be it Resolved; that the Pioneers of Camas Prairie extend to the family our sincere and heartfelt sympathy.

     S. S. Whitcomb of Gilmer died last Sunday and was buried Tuesday.  Mr. Whitcomb was one of the old pioneers, having moved to the Camas Prairie country about thirty years ago from Oregon, where he had lived since 1840.  He married Mrs. Wm. Gilmer twenty years ago, and has since resided in the Gilmer community.  By his honesty and straightforward life he won many warm friends who regret his death and extend sympathy to the bereaved ones.  He was 85 years, 11 months and 16 days old.

Over a month has passed since we laid Grandpa Whitcomb away to rest, but his memory will never be forgotten.  We often think of his many virtues.  Although he had been an invalid and a cripple for a long time yet his patience was remarkable, and he was very grateful for any kindness shown him.  Grandpa, as we all loved to call him, had the love and esteem of the entire community, and his pure Christian life before us will always be remembered.
