TROUT LAKE'S "FIRST LADY" DIED AT 95
Funeral services for Mrs. Regina Elmer, 95, Trout Lake Valley's
oldest surviving pioneer, were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 11 at the Trout
Lake Presbyterian church.
Gardners were in charge of funeral arrangements. The Rev. Clarence
Twigg officiated. Burial was in Trout Lake Cemetery.
Casket bearers were Art Jones, Charles Coate, Clifford Stewart, Howard
Hylton, Tony Guler and Walter Schmid.
Mrs. Elmer was born Oct. 29, 1865 at Berne,
Switzerland, the daughter of Christian Schmidt and Susana Trachel. She came
to the U.S. alone in 1886, at the age of 21 and met her husband, the late
Albert Elmer at the Swiss settlement at Monroe, Wisconsin.
They married on Feb. 23, 1889 and homesteaded at Trout Lake in the fall
of 1890.
In 1952 Mrs. Elmer wrote her recollections of pioneer life in Trout
Lake valley. Her manuscript, now in possession of the Mt. Adams Sun, will be
published in an early issue.
She died last Friday, July 7 at Skyline hospital.
Survivors are four daughters Mrs. Jess Christian, Mrs. Rose Wilson and
Mrs. Charles Borigo of Trout Lake and Mrs. Leona Nelson of San Bernardino,
California.
Also three sons, William and Walter Elmer, both of Portland; and
Richard Elmer, Tigard, Ore. 28 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren and
five great great grandchildren.
