HAROLD LEWIS

            Harold W. Lewis died March 21, 1996, at his home in Hood River, at the age of 82.
            Mr. Lewis was born on Nov. 5, 1913, in Glenwood, one of eight children born to Aubrey G. and India (Agee) Lewis. When Mr. Lewis was a young boy his family moved to Bingen, where his father owned and operated a grocery store. He attended elementary school in Bingen and graduated from high school in White Salmon.
            In 1940, he married Fern Baker in Vancouver. The couple made their home in Bingen, where Mr. Lewis had been appointed post-master in 1936. During his years as postmaster, he was selected as one of a team that traveled to towns in Oregon to train the newly appointed postmasters. He took military leave from the post office during World War II to serve in the U.S. Navy as a SeeBee. After his retirement from the post office, he and his wide moved to Hood River. Before his health failed, the couple enjoyed vacation trips in their motor home and golfing.
            Mr. Lewis was a member and past master of the White Salmon Masonic Lodges A.F. & A.M., the Royal Arch Masons, Order of the Eastern Star, Hood River Elks Lodge #1507, charter member of the Bingen Fraternal Order of Eagles and the White Salmon-Bingen Lions Club, as well as being a retired volunteer fireman.
            Mr. Lewis is survived by his wife, Fern Lewis, Hood River; son, Bruce Lewis, Appleton; sister, Larene Ladiges, Glenwood; many nieces and nephews as well as three step-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, two brothers and his daughter-in law.
            Private committal was held at the Pleasant Hills Cemetery in Appleton.
            Memorials may be given to Hospice of the Gorge.
            Arrangements were handled by Anderson Funeral Home in Hood River.
