CHARLES BYRKETT IS REPORTED LOST IN ACTION
Word was received there Thursday morning from the Navy
Department that Charles Byrkett was lost in action. No details were given.
He had been serving in the navy for nearly two years
and had seen considerable action since the outbreak of the war, according
to meager information received from time to time.

CHARLES BYRKETT LOST IN ACTION
In a telegram from the U.S. Navy, Mr. and Mrs. Wade Dean
were informed, Friday of last week, of the death, in action in the South
Pacific, of First-class Seaman Charles Rufus Byrkett, younger brother of
Mrs. Dean. No further details are available.
Almost at the same time as news of his death arrived,
Mr. and Mrs. Dean received a letter written by Charles on August 31, from
somewhere in the Pacific. Following the death of his father, member of a
pioneer family of Hood River and White Salmon, Mrs. Wade Dean had been guardian
of Charles, who would have been 21 years old next March.
Charles Byrkett was well known to many young folks on
both sides of the Columbia river, and his untimely death will be greatly
regretted.

LOST IN ACTION
News received here last week by relatives stated that Charles Byrkett, U.S. Navy, was killed in action on a cruiser in battle in the Pacific. Charles is a half-a brother of the Mrs. Wade Dean, of this city, and a brother of Mrs. Mona Wysaske, and Mrs. Esther Davis, both of Bingen, and Mrs. Beatrice Swan, of Portland.

BINGEN PARENTS HEAR OF DEATH
A Navy dispatch was received last week in Bingen by Mr.
and Mrs. R.A. Byrkett that their son, Charles, was lost in action. No further
details were given.
Charles is among the first battle heroes from Klickitat
County, and will be well remembered. He served in the Navy for almost two
years and had seen considerable action.

MRS. DEAN RECEIVES PURPLE HEART AWARD IN BROTHER'S HONOR
The Order of the Purple Heart was awarded the late Charles
Charles Rufus Byrkett, Seaman 2-c, USN by the Navy Department, and the medal
sent ot Mrs. W.H. Dean, of White Salmon, his sister.
Charles was the first Klickitat County boy who gave his
life in this war, having been killed while in action on the cruiser Astoria,
Aug. 9, 1942, near Guadalcanal. He enlisted prior to Pearl Harbor and was
stationed there at the time of the attack, but was on patrol duty, and arrived
back at the harbor the morning after.

MEMORIAL SERVICES TO BE HELD HERE
Thomas D. Potwin, Editor Of Yakima Herald, Will Speak At Morning Program
At 10:30 In High School Auditorium
Memorial services will be held in Goldendale Memorial
Day, Wednesday, May 30 at 10:30 a.m. in the high school auditorium. As in
the past, the program and services are in charge of Louis Leidl Post No.
116, American Legion. Thomas D. Potwin, editor of the Yakima Herald will
deliver the message at the high school. Potwin is said to be an able speaker,
and the largest crowd ever to attend Memorial services is expected to turn
out to hear the Yakima editor.
Following the program at the high school, members of
the Legion will hold a brief ceremony at the graves of veterans of both World
War I and II. A firing squad will fire a salute in recognition of their departed
comrades.
E.C. Kaiser, commander of the American Legion, invites
and urges all residents to join in the services, which will pay tribute to
the men who have lost their lives in both wars.
