MEETS ACCIDENTAL DEATH NEAR LYLE

Edward Morrill, 63 years of age, of Appleton, was killed at the county gravel pit Friday afternoon. Mr. Morrill and his brother-in-law, Rev. W.B. Lamb, were working in the pit, when a slide of gravel fell from the back wall some fifty feet above the platform, where the men were working. According to Mr. Lamb, a small portion of the gravel first fell, when he and Mr. Morrill started for safety. Mr. Lamb caught the top of a ladder at the side of the pit and swung clear of the mass of gravel that followed this small slide. Mr. Morrill was caught in the slide, which crushed the floor of the platform and carried the unfortunate man with it. His head and body was buried under four feet of gravel. With the help of U.F. Hylton and the truck drivers, Mr. Morrill was taken from the pit in a few minutes, but was dead. Dr. Zener of White Salmon, who was called, arrived a few minutes after the body was recovered.
Mr. Morrill had made his home with his sister, Mrs. W.B. Lamb, of Appleton, for the past two years. He was a single man.
Funeral services were conducted at the Union church by Rev. Youngs, of the Methodist church of White Salmon Sunday afternoon, and the remains were interred in the Appleton cemetery in the church yard. There were many beautiful floral offerings and a large crowd of the sympathetic friends in attendance at the services.
