SGT. ART BALSIGER DIES IN SERVICE OF HIS COUNTRY
Supreme Sacrifice Made While Fighting Japs on The Island of Minandoa
Sergeant Arthur Balsiger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice
P. Balsiger, of White Salmon, was killed in action May 20th in the Philippines
while serving his country in battle against that Japs according to a telegram
received by his parents last Saturday evening from the war department.
Art was 21 years old, born in White Salmon, attended
both the White Salmon grade and high school. He was a fine young man and
the entire community mourns his death in making the supreme sacrifice for
his country.
He was engaged to Miss Carley Watkins, of this city.
Archie had been in two other campaigns in the south Pacific
and it is said had turned down an offer to return to the states. He entered
the service in October of 1942 as a reserve and was called to active duty
on March 1, 1943. He served in the Wakde-Sarmi campaign in New Guinea and
the invasion of Morotai Island in the Dutch East Indies, all while with the
famous 31st Infantry division.
Arthur while in school was a prominent member of both
4-H and Future Farmers of America organizations and was also a member of
the Mountain View Grange.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice E.
Balsiger, and three sisters, Adeline, Eunice and Vivian, of White Salmon.
