History of Early Pioneer Families of Hood River, Oregon. Compiled by Mrs. D.M. Coon
ALBERT I. MASON AND FAMILY 1896
Albert Mason was born April 26, 1860. He was educated
in the public and normal schools of Missouri and began teaching soon after
he graduated.
In Kansas he filed upon a piece of land and then paid
seven hundred and fifty dollars for the relinquishment of another piece of
land. After obtaining title to his two properties, he engaged in carpenter
work, building depots on the Rock Island road. He followed this trade until
1893, when he passed the civil service examination and became a mail carrier,
first in Kansas City and later in Portland, Oregon.
On September 9, 1889, he married Miss Ollie Magill. They
have two children, Hattie Joy, and Thomas Floyd. The latter was born at the
farm in Hood River.
In 1896 Mr. Mason bought eighty acres of heavy timber
land. His family moved on the place, Mrs. Mason supervising the farm work
while he continued at his work in Portland. When he was able to come to the
farm to live there was a good orchard three years old and it was not long
until he had satisfactory income from his place. Mr. Mason is a son of a
veteran of the Civil War and Mrs. Mason is a daughter of a veteran.
She was a dress maker before her marriage and is capable
of adapting herself to her surroundings. They have a good home in Pine Grove
and a host of friends.
