Before departing for America he lived at St. Leonards in
Aston-Clinton, near Dundridge, where he owned the "Chapel Farm". In
1638 he and Sarah and their six living children sailed for America in
the ship "Martin". They belonged to the "New Haven Company". He died
during the passage from England to America, in mid ocean, 21 Jul 1638.
His will was admitted to probate in Boston where the ship arrived. He
left a large estate. In 1643, "Widow Baldwin" was recorded in New
Haven as one of the wealthiest proprietors.

Notes from Carrie E. Bodensteiner:
Robert Garratt emigrated to America in 1773 and located in Otsego County, New York. They were both taken prisoners by the English and Indians, and with their families were taken to Quebec. Enroute they all suffered terrible privations and a child was born to Mrs. Garratt on the way and two of her children died. Before leaving their homes they were allowed to bury some of their goods to keep them away from the Indians, among which goods were two copper kettles brought from England. Known as cheese kettles and holding fifty gallons each, these kettles had been used in the dairy before the family emigrated. when the English released the families from captivity, they returned to find their homes burned and all of their goods destroyed, excepting one of the copper kettles, which in 1923 was in the possession of Ella Kinney-Forbes of Tuscola County, Michigan
Robert Garrat's Revolutionary War service is documented by Cert. #3474 which is for 9£ 3s 1d, dated November or December 1781, issued to Robert Garret for services as private in Capt. Henry Brewster's Co. of Col. Frederick Weisenfel's Regiment of Levies.
