Johnson, for cutting downe a land marke, and therby breakeing the law
of this gourment, fined, . 05:00:00. [Shurtleff 8:140] "Humphrey
Johnson" appears on a list of Freeman for Scituate
that is believed to have been taken about the year 1658 [Shurtleff
8:199]. Appearances in the Plymouth Court: 8 Jun 1654: On Jury Duty
at Plymouth [Shurtleff 7:70] 5 Jun 1655: Humphrey Johnson sued Mr.
Josepth Tilden for defamacion. [Shurtleff 7:73]. On 4 Oct 1655,
"judgment was graunted vunto Humphry Johnson" [Shurtleff 7:75] 4 Oct
1655: "John Hoare, Isacke Buck, and Humphrey Johnson complained
against Mr. Richard Garrett, in an action of the case, to the damage
of 15 pounds" [Shurtleff 7:74] 5 Mar 1656: John Bryant of Scituate
sued Humphry Johnson for slaunder and defamacion for saying he "was a
forsworne, lying knaue". An agreement was drawn up whereby the former
comments were to be stricken and both parties lay their dispute to
rest. [Shurtleff 7:77-78] 2 Mar 1658: He was attorney for Abraham
Sutliffe against Gorge Russel and Isaac Stedman [Shurtleff 7:86]. Same
day, he sued Capt. James Cudworth, Lt. James Torrey, and Ens. John
Williams for 40 shillings for "laying of a fine on the said Johnson,
for not training, after the said capt had refused to lett him traine."
The case was deferred to the counsel of war. 7 Oct 1658: Mr. Johnson,
of Scituate, gets his fines remited for not serving the military, and
is ordered to bear arms as a private soldier in the future [Shurtleff
7:88] 1 Mar 1659: Humphrey Johnson sued Mr. Joseph Tilden for
defamacion (again). Humphrey Johnson was paid 20 shillings for his
service as attorney for the state on this case. [Shurtleff 7:90] 2
Oct 1662: He took the inventory of the estate of Nathaniel Rawlins of
Scituate, Lydia Rawlins widow. [Mayf. Des. 15:62] 3 Mar 1663:
William Randall sued Humphrey Johnson for "illegall, injurious, and
unjust molesting and troubleing of him, b attaching his house and
land, and corne, with all his cattle..." [Shurtleff 7:105] 5 Oct
1663: Humphrey Johnson sued William Randall for defamation, for
reporting him to be a theif." [Shurtleff 7:110] 4 Oct 1664: "Humphrey
Johnson testified that he had written a deed for Richard and Dynah
Siluester. He took oath 5 Oct 1664." [Shurtleff 7:115-6] 4 Oct 1664:
"Mr. Josepth Tilden, Richard Dwelley, John Turner Jr., and James
Torrey, of Scituate, " sue "Humphery Johnson, of Hingham" for
trespas." [Shurtleff 7:118-9] 5 July 1666: Tax Rate for land owned
by Humphrey Johnson in Scituate: 00:3:6 and 00:03:03" [Shurtleff
7:129] 29 Oct 1670: "The town of Scittuate" sued "Humphery Johnson,
of Hingham" for carrying away cedar and oak timbers from the town
commons. [Shurtleff 7:162]. 4 Mar 1673: "Nathaniell Thomas, Junir,
of Marshfield, as surty for Humphery Johnson, of Hingham" is summed 6
pounds for not recovering damages owned John Turner Jr. from Johnson
for the case of 1 Mar 1673. [Shurtleff 7:176] 6 Mar 1667: "Humphery
Johnson, of Hingham, late of Scittuate, as inhabitant or propriator in
all the land in the townshipp of Scittuate that was undivided in the
year 1654, " sues Isacke Wilder of Hingham. [Shurtleff 7:201] 2 Mar
1681: "Humphrey Johnson of Hingham" made oath to the validity of Gov.
Josiah Winslow's will. [Mayf.Des. 5:85] 7 Jul 1683: "John Bryant,
Jeremiah Hatch, and Joseph Silvester, [agents] of Scituate" sued
"Humphery Johnson, of Hingham" for trespas, since Johnson claimed land
in Scituate and has continued to work and hire others to work this
claimed land, contrary to the towns' orders. The jury finds that
Humphery Johnson has a right to the said lands. [Shurtleff 7:262]. 15
Jul 1685: [Hinkly Gouer] "went with Humphrey Johnson [on] the 16th of
Apr 1685, to ... Scituate, " to acquire some part of the commons
granted to him by an earlier "execution" [of the court]. Humphrey
seemed to demand more than what had been awared him and was a real
fuss-bucket about it, until finally they settled. (long) [Shurtleff
7:291-2] 2 Mar 1686: "Lt. Anthony Collimore, of Scituate" sues
"Humphry Johnson, of Hingham" [Shurtleff 7:298-9] -------- LAND: 20
Jul 1668: [Mayf.Des. 33:153-4]: "We Humphrey Johnson and Abigail my
wife in the township of Hingham in the County of Suffolk...New
England... our children John and Deborah Johnson..." (John is under
21, Deborah under 18 and unmarried), witnessed by Robert Dunbar Sr.,
