Sir Gilbert, as guardian of his nephew, the 4th Earl of Shrewsbury,
joined the forces of the Earl of Richmond (afterwards King Henry VII)
with 2,000 men and commanded the right wing of the army at the battle
of Bosworth in 1485, in which Richard III was killed. He was made a
Privy-Counsellor by the victorious Tudor monarch, and granted the
manor of Grafton, Worcestershire, and other lands. He was one of the
commanders in the battle of Stoke in 1487, and was made a Knight
Banneret. He also served on the Continent and in 1495 was elected
Knight of the Garter. For several years thereafter he was Deputy
[Governor] of Calais.
