"Samuel Gager was born on the homestead in West Farms; all his
children were born in that area also. Shortly after his second
marriage (in 1776), the family moved near the settlement of Stafford,
In Tolland County. Samuel was already a large landowner there, as he
had purchased over two hundred and fifty acres from his father. On
Mar. 5, 1779 he bought the home farm of John Thomas near Square Pond
for one hundred and fifty pounds. In the next few years, Samuel Gager
bought several hundred acres in the Stafford area, not only for
farming but also for the extensive saw and grist mill business he and
his sons operated in that area.
"Although Samuel Gager used the suffix "Jr." as part of his legal
name, this was not to distinguish him from his father (whose name was
John), but from his father's brother, Samuel Gager, of Bozrah, Conn.
"Samuel Gager is probably buried on his home farm in Stafford, as a
small parcel of land from the ground he bought in 1779 was set aside
for a burying place."
