Recollections of Elmer Keever:
Not because it will be of any especial interest but merely for pastime
I am jotting down some recollections of my past experiences. I was
born about a mile north of Ridgeville, Warren County, Ohio. October
16, 1861. My father purchased a triangular piece of land of about 18
acres and erected a small cottage and other buildings and set out an
orchard. The house in which I was born is now (1922) owned by E.
Bunnel. The orchard is entirely gone except, perhaps, one or two
badly decayed trees. The house is much the same as when we vacated it
56 years ago. My earliest recollection was of being in attendance at
my grandfather's burial, which occured in 1864. The closed carriages
used in those days and the gloom of the surrounding woods made an
impression on my memory that has never been forgotten. The interment
was made at what is known as the "Stone Schoolhouse Graveyard" one
mile east of Utica, Warren Co., Ohio. At that time it was surrounded
by woods on at least three sides. My grandfather's name was George
Keever and he came to Ohio from Pennsylvania 1801. In 1815 he
purchased a tract of land containing something over 100 acres situated
on the east border of Clearcreek Twp. adjoining Wayne Twp. I have in
my possession (1922) the plat of this tract made out for him by a Mr.
Wright, county surveyor in 1815. Most of the marks referred to in
corners and boundaries are trees of different sizes and kinds, as
sugar, elm etc. He settled on this tract and lived there until the
time of his death in 1864. Game was plentiful in those early days,
1815, and it has been recorded that he killed a black bear near a
spring but a few rods from the cabin.
My grandmother's name was Jane Venard but I know nothing of her
family. She died many years before my grandfather passing away in
1844. My grandfather was born Nov. 20, 1782 and my grandmother Jane
Venard Sept. 1st, 1786. My grandfather's family consisted of 14,
these being 12 children My father, Absalom Keever, was the youngest
and was born Nov. 12, 1828. His brothers and sisters were Michael,
Belinda, Eliza, Stephen, Eliza (the second), John George, Susan,
William, Jarvis and Jane. Michael, Stephen, John and William settled
in the region about Union City, Fountain City and Huntsville, Indiana,
where I understand they have a number of descendents. Eliza (2nd)
married Edmund Throckmorton to whom three children were born, Absalom,
John and Jane. Absalom died in the service of his country at Gallatin
Tennessee during the Civil War. John died in 1912 leaving no
descendants. Jane married William Henry and has two children living
(1922) at West Alexandria, Ohio. Ellsworthy J. Henry and Mrs. Chas.
Minderman. Belinda married __ Pence, the descendents of whom are a
grandson Frank L. Pence of Lebanon, Ohio. also his two daughters Mrs.
Arch Hall and Mrs. Ray Zech and a son Irving Pence. Susan married
William Burnet, there being one desdendant, Miss Effie Burnet of New
Burlington, Ohio. The others all passed away in early life.
On Feb. 27th, 1854 my father married Amy Ellen Earnhart. The product
of this union was one child, Rush. Rush married Mariam Stellman Jan.
30, 1879. She died in 1885 and he afterward married Margaret Geiger to
whom was born two children, Raymond and Dallas, both of whom are now
(1922) living in San Diego, California
Amy Ellen Earnhart Keever died in 1857 and on march 24th 1859 my
father married Catherine Richardson. To this union was born two
children. Amy Ellen who died in her infancy and Elmer E. (the
writer). Catherine Richardson's parents came from New Jersey and
settled on mile north of Utica where they remained the remainder of
their days. The farm is now owned by David Graham a descendant. My
maternal grandfather's name was Henry Richardson -- they were of Irish
descent. My grandmother's name was Ann White. They had seven
children. Mary, Rachel, George, Catherine, Abbie, Sarah Ann and a boy
who died in his infancy. Mary married Samuel Graham, the descendents
of whom are Charles Graham and two daughters, Lafayette Graham and
Mrs. Lavisa Sheets of Ridgeville, Warren Co., Ohio. Mrs. Lincoln
Lackey of Lebanon, O. her four daughters and one son. Mr. David
Graham. Mrs. Harry Johnson and Mrs. Clara Spence all of Dayton, O.
Rach married lawrence Rogers. Of their seven children Mrs. Ora Decker
of Lebanon, O. and Prof. Thos. H. Rogers of Houston, Texas survive.
George is survived by a daughter Mrs. Jno Phillips and her two
daughters and son of State Line, Ind. Abbie married Geo. Pence son of
Belinda Keever Pence. Belinda after the death of her first husband
married Edmund throckmorton. The descendents of Abbie are Frank L.
Pence, his two daughters and son as mentioned heretofore as being also
survivors of Belinda Keever. Sarah Ann married Edmund Throckmorton.
She has a son living, Sherman Throckmorton of Seattle, Wash. As
heretofore mentioned it will be noticed that Edmund throckmorton
married two of my father's sisters Belinda and Eliza and lastly one of
my mothers sisters Sarah Ann making him my uncle by three marriages."

She was a cousin of Edna Nott.
Information provided by Jerry Brown in August, 2000, which he received
from Georgia Ann Spiker Varner:
Estella Nott's obituary listed her as mother of 6 children (James,
Claire, William, Mary Alice and another William who died in infancy,
plus Floyd Ashby). It listed her married name as Estella Hammer but
Georgia Ann said that was a mistake as she knew his name was Hammel.
It appears that Estella Nott and Phlem Keever were married in 1893,
then divorced. She married Clarence Ashby, who died in 1909. Estella
apparently married Phlem a second time in 1910. They were
subsequently divorced in 1919 and she then married Eugene Hammel.
