Information on the Keever surname and it's pronunciation

Keever sounds exactly the same as the German Kiefer, in German with the 'ie' a long drawn out 'ee' like in 'deeper' or 'keeper. or 'sea' or 'tea'.

A Kiefer incidentally is a tree, a pine tree.

Information came from a Dutch gentleman regarding the name Keefer, his own name being Kever, and he said this name means a 'bug'. Well here is the bug in the whole thing, listen closely, a bug in English is a 'KÄFER' in German, that Käfer is pronounced quite distinctly different. The 'ä' in Kaefer sounds exactly like the 'ea' in Bear, or the 'a' in share or care.

The whole secret in translating names is the sound, knowing how the German name sounds when spoken aloud. My way of doing it on the reverse, I listen to how the English name sounds when spoken aloud and I try to write it down as my German ear hears it. Bruce Burgoyne, the writer, will do it the same way when he transcribes Hessian Diaries. Names of places or English officers, written down as the German diarist heard them, he uses the same procedure just in the reverse. It will not always work, but I have a pretty good success rate as many of you will attest to.
