Timothy owned and occupied the old homestead. By the will of hisgrandfather, Capt. James Babcock, the homestead farm was to be dividedequally, "for quantity and quality", between Oliver and Timothy at thedeath of their mother Sarah.
On 20 Dec 1746 Timothy received by deed from his mother fifty acres ofland in Voluntown, bounded on the south by Nathaniel Babcock's landand otherwise carefully bounded on all sides. This may have been apart of the homestead which was to be hers during life. On 11 Feb1753 she deeded to her son Timothy "in consideration of ye sum orannual payments of £85 old tenor", a "parcel of land", etc. There isno doubt that this deed conveyed that part of the homestead farm whichby the will of Capt. James was hers during life and at her death wasto be Timothy's.
Timothy was a farmer and a merchant, having a country store adjoininghis house. The house stood partly in Voluntown and partly in N.Stonington.
His will bears date 3 Mar 1776, nineteen years prior to his death. Itprovides that his wife shall have the use of the property during herlife, or until she should again marry. His five girls and four boysare mentioned in his will. His eldest son, Timothy, is named as soleexecutor.

There is not a great deal of information known about Ezekiel Billings,Sr., including the name of his mother. According to letters on filein his Revolutionary War Pension Application papers at the NationalArchives, he was born in Stonington, CT in 1758, and his half-brotheris Benjamin Billings who was born in Stonington, CT, son of James andMargaret Fanning. Margaret Fanning died in 1752 and is buried at theGreat Plains Cemetery in North Stonington, CT. There is no record inStonington records that we have found of a second marriage of James orof Ezekiel's birth. In the Revolutionary War Pension papers, it issaid he deserted. When he applied for his pension, he explained thathe was taken prisoner on board the prison ship, "Jersey," and had notdeserted. Still, he was denied the pension. However, recordsavailable now. obtained from the British Archives by the Old BrooklynSociety, reveal that he was indeed a prisoner on the "Jersey" and wasexchanged, so this proves his claim that he didn't desert.
