Her obituary, published in "Deaths from Sherburne Newspapers1864-1900, 974.773/s1" reads as follows:
'Mrs. Martha Babcock, widow of Elias Babcock, d. N.Y. City Apr 14,1884; 95 yr. She d. at the home of her dau. at 153 E. 124th St.,NYCity. She was b Nov. 1788 near New Haven, Conn. in what is nowWoodbridge, Conn. She was Martha Baldwin. Her husband was the mostsuccessful businessman in the early history of Sherburne. He d. June10, 1833 at 53 yrs., the richest man in Chenango valley at that time.He kept several different stores, etc. About 1852 Mrs. BabcockleftSher. and res. with one or another of her ch'n until her death. Herremains were brought here and interred in the Congregational (Sher.Quarter) Cem., the Rev. Teller off. at her fun. She was a member ofthe Cing. Ch. of Norwich. Her surviving ch'n are: Elvira P., widow ofBenj. F. Rexford, Esq., of Norwich; Chas. W. Babcock, Esq., ofCuyahoga Falls, O; John E., Esq., of Towanda, Pa.; Cynthia N., wife ofJohn DeWitt Rexford, Esq., of Jamesville, Wis., and Adeline S., wifeof James W. Perkins of N.Y. City.'
