Married in Hot Springs Co., Arkansas, where he and his father's family lived briefly between living in Lawrence Co., Arkansas and Walker Co., Texas. Lived in Walker Co. from about 1849 to 1853 when he settled in Limestone Co., Texas. He and wife were said to be the first settlers in Lost Prairie, and he paid only $50 for 57 acres of land. He was a very determined man who suffered from rheumatism and rode a horse instead of walking whenever possible. He accumulated much land, had a carpentry shop, and a mercantile business and hauled supplies from Jefferson, Karmac, and Shreveport back to Lost Prairie.
He helped the Southern cause in the Civil War by paying a man to serve in his place and helping to keep the supplies moving to the troops. He was one of the wealthiest men in the area at the time of this death. He was a member of the masonic lodge. There is a picture of James and also his wife in the Moody book. According to the Moody book, Amarena was a stately woman, who wore full skirts, black top with white collar and cuffs and a black cap every day and a black silk bonnet when she went out. Most of the time she also wore a white apron with crocheted lace. She was a very domineering person, managing all who were around her, seeing that they had plenty to do. As a widow, she gave her children a part of their father's estate as they reached adulthood, to get them started. She was industrious, always piecing quilts, knitting, or doing some handwork. She always had money in her possession, putting it in small bags and pinning the bags around her waist under the full skirts. After the emancipation, one of her slaves stayed with her, he was so devoted; she gave him livestock to get him started on his own. She was generous in giving to her church and to Westminster College. In her later years, she lived with her children, mostly with Daisy and Ed Bronaugh, but she was in the home of her daughter, Adaline Bradshaw, in Ben Hur when she died.
