Roberta BOSTIC [Parents] was born about 1900. She died after 1981. Roberta married Living.

Address: 675 East Main, Kahoka, MO 63445

H. C. FICKLIN was born about 1850. He married Adelaid F. "Ada" ROTHWELL on 25 Dec 1873.

Adelaid F. "Ada" ROTHWELL [Parents] was born about 1854. She married H. C. FICKLIN on 25 Dec 1873.

The "Genealogical Society of Central Missouri Reporter Quarterly", Vol. 14, No. 2, Summer 1995, p. 49, lists "Genealogical Gleanings from the "Keytesville Herald, January 3 - December 26, 1874." It says that an article dated 17 January says that "H.C. Ficklin married Ada Rothwell, daughter of John Rothwell, on 25th ult." The "ult" means the previous month (December). This must be this person, and I have added "Ada" as her nickname.

Nevil WAYLAND was born about 1754 in SC. He died in 1807 in , Russell Co., Virginia. Nevil married Keziah.

Reportedly served in Rev. War with the SC state troops.

NOTE: "The Izard County Historian", Vol. 13, No. 1, January, 1982; article by Paul Townsend Wayland. Address for publication is: P.O. Box 84, Dolph, AR 72528. Phone 501-297-3751.

This line from Nevil is not believed to be connected to the Germanna Waylands. The author of the above article had the same conclusion, and he had done more research on this line than any other person. He states that there are over 30 different references in the archives of South Carolina to Nevil Wayland serving in the Rev. War, including a land grant of 228 acres on the Tyger River. He is found in S.C. in the 1790 census with wife and one male over 16 and two males under 16, and four females. Indications are that the family left S.C. before 1800. There is then found a Nevil Wayland Sr. and Nevil Wayland Jr. listed on the tax records of Russell County, Virginia in 1805, and it is assumed that they moved from S.C. to Va. The following year, the younger son, Francis, is listed also on the same tax records. Property assessed to Nev in 1806 is assessed the next year to Keziah Wayland, so it is assumed that this is his widow. Nevil Sr. seemed to have more education than most, as he was submitted for appointment as county coroner the year before he died, and was well respected in the community. It is thought that the oldest son of Nevil Sr. was named Henry, and he went to Ark. with his brother, Nevil. Some researchers think that Nevil may have been his middle name and he may be one of the Germanna Waylands, but I don't see any evidence of this. He is in a different county and Nevil is a strange name for the Germanna Waylands. These same persons think that he may have been married twice and that his first wife's name may have been Elizabeth and that he was born about 1755...I don't know what documentation that they have for this. Later research by Ronald Wayland indicates that Nevil may have been his middle name and his full name was Francis Nevil Wayland. Ronald also says that Nevil was a surname common in S.C., and these Nevil families were close friends with the Waylands, and possibly intermarried. His research continues to point out a lack of connection with the Germanna Waylands. He thinks that Nevil Sr.'s father may have been named Henry, and would have been contemporary with the original Germanna colonist, Thomas Wayland, so could not have been from his line.

Mrs. Geneva Wayland wrote me in 1984 that "the story that I have heard is that there were two brothers, Henry and Neville, who came from VA to a place near Black River in Arkansas.

The following is possibly this Nevil or his son, Nevil:

Stony Creek Baptist Church Minute Books

1801 - 1811
1811 - 1814

Fort Blackmore, Scott County Virginia

This copy of what is perhaps the first book of the Stony Creek Primitive Baptist Church, located on Stony creek, near Fort Blackmore, Scott County, Virginia, was in the possession of Mr. Scott Beatright of Colburn, Virginia, whose grandfather was once a Minister of this church.

The book is written on paper and bound between covers made of home spun cloth. The handwriting is very good and the ink has lasted well.

Copied August, 1966, by Emory L. Hamilton, Wise, Virginia, with a copy filed in the Archives of the Southwest Virginia Historical Society, at Clinch Valley College, Wise, Virginia and a copy sent to the Virginia State Library, Richmond, Virginia.

A CHURCH BOOK FOR STONY CREEK CHURCH
NEVEL WAYLAND, CLERK FOR THE CHURCH"

And the notes go on and on. It is located on:

http://c-23.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/archives/va/scott/church/stonycrk.txt

The following is from the above:

"August the 22, (1801)
Met in order. Referred the hearing of Sister Mary Jones till next church meeting:
Brother Jesse Wilson and Br. David Cox to cite her to appear. Received by experience John Watson, Senr. Baptised Nevel Wayland, Senr., William Marshall Cockrel, Henry Leath, David Cox Jr., Nancy Wayland, black Rode (Rhoda)."

Since it says Nevel Sr., it is probably this man. It has this man's two sons further down:

November (1801) church meeting:
Stephen Osborn ) Received by experience and baptised
Jemina Osborn )
Henry Cock )
Sarah Penalton )
Nevel Wayland, Jun'r )
Frank Wayland )
Matilda Cocks )

The index in the above Stony Creek Baptist church book 1801-1814 had these Wayland names:

Wayland, 2, 3(2), 5, 15
Frances, 25
Francis, 13(2)
Frank, 2, 27
James, 17
Kesiah, 25
Lacy, 27
Nancy, 1
Nevel, 1
Nevel Jr., 2
Nevel Sr., 1
Nevil, 7, 8(3), 10,
14, 17, 22, 23, 25
Nevil Sr., 5
Zodak, 23

I don't know how the following could be related:

Two deeds in Spartanburg Co, SC, suggest that the parents of William Brashears [Jr] was William Brashears Sr and his wife, Sarah _____.

On 26 Oct 1795, Elijah Stevens of Spartanburg sold to William Beshears [Jr] of Spartanburg, for 30 Sterling, 300 acres [on North Fork, Tyger River] bordering Fields, Wadsworth, and Amos, granted in 1791 to Elijah Stevens. Witnesses: Nevel Wayland, Betsy Wayland. Signed: Elijah Stevens. Proved 10 Oct 1808 by oath of Betsy Wayland to James L. Burd, Recorded 11 Apr 1809. (Spartanburg Deeds, Book M, p.45-6). William Beshears Sr, of Spartanburg, SC, made oath that he saw Elijah Stevens deed the 300 acres to William Beshears Jr, saw the other witnesses subscribe, and gave evidence to the deed himself.
There is a Nevel Wayland found as a Secretary at the Stony Creek Primitive Baptist Church, located on Stony Creek, near Fort Blackmore, Scott County, VA. This record is dated 1801-1814 and can be found at:

http://c-23.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/archives/va/scott/church/stonycrk.txt

Uncertain how this Nevel Wayland would fit in, but it is an unusual first name for Waylands and it seems that they would have to be connected.

Keziah was born about 1754. She died after 1830 in , Lawrence Co., Arkansas. Keziah married Nevil WAYLAND.

Found in the 1830 Lawrence Co., Arkansas census between 70-80 years old.

They had the following children:

  M i Henry WAYLAND
  M ii Nevil WAYLAND Jr.
M iii Francis WAYLAND "Frank" was born about 1786.

The following is from the church site mentioned under his father's notes:

No entry for the September, 1808, but this entry at the top of page with no names given)

"Brethren I can inform you it is out of my power to attend meeting today, by reason of my wife being sick at this time, and I beg of you to try and bear with my absence."

October the 22 day 1808
Church meeting held at Stony Creek. The church met together and found in love. A letter to the church from the Association for fellowship. The church satisfied with what the committee at first (?). The church concludes to send members to receive satisfaction from said church if they have any to give. The church appoints Brother Wells, Brother Cox, Brother Steward, Brother Brickey. The church sent a letter with the committee how they are to proceed. They received Brother Gibson's letter in their fellowship. Then Brother Cox requested a letter of recommendation. The church granted it. To have a query to the church, "if a member grieves another and don't give satisfaction." The answer is to take one or more (?). The church concludes Francis Wayland in disorder for contradicting his Sisters and not giving satisfaction to them. The church appoints Brother Brickey, Brother Wells to go and deal with him against the next church meeting and bring the answer to the church. Dismissed in order.

November the 21, 1808
The church met together and found in love. The church satisfied with what the Committee did. Brother Francis Wayland acknowledged his fault in so doing _ Sister Becky forgives him. The church is satisfied with him. A letter from Jessee Bolin to Brother (no name given) to meet him at Brother Wallings to try for fellowship next month. The church grants his request for Brother to go and beg for peace. The church thinks it good for members to go with Brother Cox, Brother Cock, Brother Steward, Brother Wells. Dismissed in order.
-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

"Sisters" refers to female church members when capitalized, just as "Brothers" does, and does not mean his actual sisters.

-=-==-==-=-=-==
August the 27, 1814
The church sat and is found in love. Brother Wells, Moderator. Then came forward the reference concerning Pressly Carter. The church excommunicated Pressley Carter for not hearing them. Then came forward black Sam and said he had been in sin and said he was sorry for it and he hoped the Lord forgives him, and the church also. Money made up for the Association. Then Brother Frank Wayland and Brother John Gipson and Lacy and Sister Wayland also, for which they grant them all. (probably a request for dismission) Dismissed.

They may have been moving from Virginia to Arkansas and that is the reason they were dismissed.
  M iv William WAYLAND

Henry WAYLAND [Parents] was born about 1777 in , , South Carolina. He died about 1830/1840 in , Lawrence Co., Arkansas. Henry married Sarah.

An article entitled "The Waylands" in the
"Family Histories" book, p. 159, from the Lawrence County Library, Walnut Ridge, Ark., that I have a copy of states that he was a justice of the peace in 1820. He also is found with his wife (unnamed) in the church roll of the Strawberry Congregation of Cumberland Presbyterians in 1825. The children given are listed by a descendant, Marigenne Elliott, 464 Valley Drive, East Alton, IL 62024, who also gives wife's name. A descendant states that he left S.C. or Va. earlier than the others and was in Humphreys Co., Tenn. in 1810, moving on to Ark. in 1815.

Sarah was born about 1785. She married Henry WAYLAND.

There is a "Sarah Penalton" baptised Nov 1801 along with Nevil Wayland, Jr. and his brother, Frank. Not known if she could possibly be this one. Look at note under Nevil Sr.

They had the following children:

  M i Nevil WAYLAND
  M ii James WAYLAND
  M iii Cicero WAYLAND
F iv Nancy WAYLAND was born about 1825.
F v Kisiah WAYLAND was born about 1827.

This marriage was in the records at ancestry.com. I don't know how this Henry Snively could be related to the other one.

Nevil WAYLAND Jr. [Parents] was born in 1785 in , , South Carolina. He died on 29 Aug 1840 in Batesville, Lawrence Co., Arkansas.

Other marriages:
FORESTER, Permela

NOTE: See reference under father.

Came to Arkansas in 1815 or 1816. One of prominent pioneer settlers of Lawrence County. Was a slave owner and had some fine farming land on Spring River, not far upstream from the present town of Black Rock. He was active in local affairs and appointed a second lieutenant in the territorial militia. He helped organize the Flat Creek Methodist Church. His first wife and the mother of his children is unknown; he married Permela Foster only three years before his death. A Batesville, Arkansas newspaper carried his obituary.

Care must be taken, as his nephew born abt 1805, the son of his brother Henry, also is named Nevil Wayland Jr. This was in the tradition of naming sons after the brother rather than the father, and this Nevil also names a son after his brother, Henry. Nevil's obit was carried in the Batesville newspaper. It says that he was survived by 3 sons and 4 daughters.

This was in the church record books (see father for source). The last name is apparently not in the records and it may or may not be Wayland.:

A submitter to ancestry.com has given this Nevil's wife as "Permela Forister Wayland." Her parents are not given. It is unknown whether or not Wayland was her last name, but more likely it was Forister.

Permela FORESTER was born about 1790. She married Nevil WAYLAND Jr. in 1837.

Not the mother of his children; married him 3 yrs before his death.

Nevil WAYLAND [Parents] was born about 1805. He died on 24 Nov 1851 in , Walker Co., Texas. Nevil married Elizabeth HOOPER in 1825 in , Lawrence Co., Arkansas.

Moved to Texas about 1850 according to Marigenne Elliott, 464 Valley Drive, East Alton, IL 62024. Information on descendants is from book by Mary and Virgil Moody, 1979, Library of Congress Catalog Card No: 79-90278. In this book, it says that Nevil was engaged in transporting supplies from the port of Galveston. On one occasion, he and four men took wagons pulled by oxen and left for Galveston. They were murdered by bandits and their bodies and the wagons burned. However, the bandits did not find any money as Nevil had it hidden in a keg of nails which he always carried on the wagon. Care must be taken as this man has the same name as his Uncle, Nevil Wayland Jr., in the tradition at the time of naming sons after the brother rather than after the father. Nevil Wayland Jr. (the uncle, born abt. 1785) also names his first born son Henry after his brother. In the Arkansas tax records, they assign the "Sr." to this Nevil's uncle and a "Jr." to him, but this was only to keep them separate, and this Nevil actually never went by a "Jr.", but just "Nevil".

Elizabeth HOOPER was born in Nov 1809 in , , Missouri. She died on 2 Dec 1873 in Lost Prairie, Limestone Co., Texas and was buried in Lost Prairie Cem. Elizabeth married Nevil WAYLAND in 1825 in , Lawrence Co., Arkansas.

Following the death of her husband, Elizabeth in 1853 sold her land and traveled with her family, and the family of her son James, to Limestone County, Texas from their home in Walker County, Texas. She purchased land and maintained her own home their until her death at the age of 63 years and 11 months. She is found in the 1860 Limestone Co. Texas census as Elizabeth Wayland, age 48, with dtr. Martha age 16 and Isabel age 14. She is found in the 1870 census same county, as Elizabeth Wayland, age 61, with dtr. Martha listed as "Martha Bates" age 24 and Richard Bates age 5 as the only other family members.

They had the following children:

  M i James C. WAYLAND
M ii M. Eskeridge WAYLAND was born about 1830 in , , Arkansas. He died in Apr 1881 in Lost Prairie, Limestone Co., Texas and was buried in Lost Prairie Cem.

Went with father and older brother James to Walker Co. in 1848 and on to Limestone Co. in 1853. He worked for James, helping him in hauling supplies from Jefferson, Karnack, and Shreveport. During the great logjam, riverboats could make it all the way to those first two cities in east Texas to unload supplies. Captain Shreve (for whom Shreveport, Louisiana was named) managed to dynamite the logjam making more business for Shreveport, but turning Jefferson and Karnack into ghost towns as the river dried up. Jefferson had just turned its nose up at Jay Gould's proposal to make it a railroad center, thinking they would have the river traffic forever. He put it though Marshall, Texas, about 30 miles south, and Marshall flourished while Jefferson went from 50,000 people to its present population of about 6,000. Karnack is the hometown of Ladybird Johnson, wife of LBJ. After his brother James's death, Eskeridge continued the hauling business for his brother's wife, Amarena. He was on one of these routine trips when he was attacked and scalped. He was brought back to Lost Prairie, where he lived only a few days. It must have been very dangerous in those days, with little law enforcement, as his father met a similar death.
F iii Polly WAYLAND was born about 1833 in , , Arkansas.

Not much known. May have had children, Violet and Vick.
  M iv Henry C. WAYLAND
  F v Mahala WAYLAND was born about 1836 in , , Arkansas.
F vi Louisa WAYLAND was born about 1839 in , , Arkansas.
F vii Sarah Jane WAYLAND was born about 1842 in , Hot Spring Co., Arkansas.

The Waylands were not too pleased when she married Wm. Sanders, but helped get them started along with the Sanders, giving them cows, mares, a dozen hens, two fine shoats (pigs), a feather bed, and a goose and a gander. They farmed rented land in the area for awhile, but found the supervision of the two families too close and moved west. There is a full and detailed history of this family in the book by their daughter, Sue Sanders, entitled, OUR COMMON HERD, Garden City Pub. Co., Inc., New York, 1940.
  F viii Martha WAYLAND
  F ix Isabella "Belle" WAYLAND

David L. RICHEY was born in 1825 in , , Indiana. He died in 1872 in , Lawrence Co., Arkansas. David married Matilda WAYLAND on 6 Feb 1848 in , , Arkansas.

Brother of her sister Sarah's husbands Joseph and Hamilton.

Matilda WAYLAND [Parents] was born in 1828 in , , Arkansas. She married David L. RICHEY on 6 Feb 1848 in , , Arkansas.

Ancestry File has her marrying Jonathan Ogden in 1845, but E.C. Davenport says that this is not feasible and gives husband as Richey.

William WAYLAND [Parents] was born about 1790. He died in 1843 in , Lawrence Co., Arkansas. William married Elizabeth.

Given as child of either Nevil Sr. or of Henry by Marigenne Elliott, and I think that Nevil is more likely.

Elizabeth was born in 1793 in , , N.C.. She died in 1853 in , Lawrence Co., Arkansas. Elizabeth married William WAYLAND.

Last name may have been Stuart.

They had the following children:

  F i Prudence "Prudee" WAYLAND
  M ii Francis J. WAYLAND
  F iii Nancy WAYLAND
  F iv Matilda WAYLAND
  F v Sarah Ann WAYLAND
  F vi Mary Stuart WAYLAND
M vii Ralph Edward WAYLAND was born in 1836. He died in 1863.

James WAYLAND [Parents] was born about 1818. He died in 1844 in , Lawrence Co., Arkansas. James married Matilda EDDY in 1840 in , , Arkansas.

Matilda EDDY was born about 1820. She married James WAYLAND in 1840 in , , Arkansas.
