Edward F. HERNDON was born in 1833. He married Julia Ann WAYLAND on 27 Jul 1858 in , Orange Co., Virginia.

NOTE: A, p.103

Julia Ann WAYLAND [Parents] was born in 1839. She died in 1930. Julia married Edward F. HERNDON on 27 Jul 1858 in , Orange Co., Virginia.

NOTE: A, pp.102,103

They had the following children:

  F i Willie Wayland HERNDON

Joseph F. HOFFMAN [Parents] was born in 1834. He married Octavia E. WAYLAND on 29 Sep 1871 in , Orange Co., Virginia.

Octavia E. WAYLAND [Parents] was born in 1844 in , , Virginia. She married Joseph F. HOFFMAN on 29 Sep 1871 in , Orange Co., Virginia.

NOTE: A, pp.102,103; Orange Co. VA Marriage Record 2, p.11

According to census would be born in 1844; according to marriage record would be 1848. Most likely, she was taking liberties with age at time of marriage.

James HOFFMAN was born about 1810. He married Mary F. FINKS.

Mary F. FINKS was born about 1812. She married James HOFFMAN.

They had the following children:

  M i Joseph F. HOFFMAN

Abraham C. "Abram" WAYLAND [Parents] was born in 1826 in , , Virginia. He died in 1908 in Albemarle, , Virginia. Abraham married Margaret M. KENNEDY about 1845 in , , Virginia.

NOTE: A, p.103; B, p.83

Children are from obit in Albemarle paper dated 1908, which says that he is survived by "a widow, four sons, and five dtrs.". The names of the children are not given in birth order, in all liklihood, so birth dates could be off considerably and are rough estimates. Obit says he died of a stroke and does not mention any civil war service, but I feel that the Abraham C. Wayland listed in the "Index of the Compiled Confederate Records" is him. Dr. John W. Wayland finds the record of an Abram C. Wayland, corporal in the Barboursville Guard, Co. F, 13th VA Infantry. His brother B.B. is in the same company. (see info on his cousin Martin, who is also listed).

This is from the National Archives. 13th Virginia Infantry, David F. Riggs (leader), page 173:

[Wayland, Abraham C., b. 1830? Laborer, enlisted 4/17/61 at Barboursville in Co. F as Cpl to Pvt 4/23/62. To Cpl. 1/1/64. Absent sick 9/61 and still absent sick "But capable of performing duty" at Co. muster 10/31/61. Absent sick 12/18/61 - 1/12/62; no record Jan/Feb 1862. Absent sick May/June 1962. Wounded at Cedar Mountain 8/9/62; returned to duty 1/23/63. AWOL 5/8/64 - 8/31/64; absent sick as of 9/22/64; No record 10/64 - 11/64. Present at final muster 2/28/65. Paroled 5/24/65 at Gordonsville.]

Here is a letter received by me on 7/12/96 from my correspondent, R. Lee Wayland, a descendant of this Abraham:

"I will try to give you the best dates I have on Abraham C. Wayland, Sr. and his family. Abraham C.'s CSA service record indicates a birth date of 1830 but it has a ? by it which would indicate some uncertainty, but
this date agrees fairly well with the census records (1850 - 20, 1860 -31?, 1870 - 40, 1880 - 49) but then the 1900 census lists him as 73 with his birthday in April which would make him born about 1827. In any
event he must have been born somewhere in the 1827-1830 range of years. Your records indicate that he died in 1908 and this corresponds to the date that the Wayland plot in the Grace Episcopal Church at Cismont, Va. was bought so I am pretty certain that the 1908 date of death is correct. I am still going to try to find his obituary in the microfilm records of the 1908 local Albemarle Co. newspaper. His wife was Margaret Kennedy, daughter of Littleton Kennedy and Martha Hill. Again, the 1900 census lists her as age 72 with a birthday in March, but earlier census records show her consistently as 4 years younger (1850 - 18, 1860 - 28, 1870 - 38, and 1880 - 48)so her birthdate is probably 1832, although it could be as early as 1828.

As to the children, I have just discovered a problem. Queen Victoria (Aunt Vic) was the oldest child. Her tombstone at Grace Episcopal Church gives her date of birth as 31 October 1856, and this is fairly consistent with the census records (1860 - 3, 1870 - 14, 1880 - 22). The date of death on her tombstone is 7 September 1939. She was married to A. E. Humphrey who was born 15 August 1858 and died 19 January 1926 according to his tombstone. Now for the problem. Robert Fisher (Fish), my grandfather, was the second child. His tombstone and the family Bible give his date of birth as 12 February 1857, but if Queen Victoria's date of birth on 31 October 1856 is correct, then Robert Fisher could hardly have been born on 12 February 1857 - just a little over 3 months later. The birthdates in the family Bible were probably written much later than when Robert Fisher was born because they are all in one handwriting and the children are listed before their father. The census records would indicate that Robert Fisher was probably born in 1858 (1860 - 2, 1870 - 12, 1880 - 22), so I think he was probably born in 1858 rather than in 1857. Harriett Virginia (Aunt Jennie), the third child, was born in 1860 which is consistent with the census records (1860 - 8 mos., 1870 - 10, 1880 - 20). I do not have the date of her death. Abraham C., Jr. was the 4th child, and I have already sent you the dates of his birth and death (1862 - 1956) from his tombstone although this birth date is not consistent with the census records (1870 - 6, 1880 - 15). He married Mary E. Humphrey on 29 December 1887 and had children. Susan M. (Aunt Susie), the 5th child, was born on 24 January 1866 and died on 8 June 1933. She married William Alonzo Wood on 6 November 1881. Her birth date is consistent with the census records (1870 - 4, 1880 14). LouElla or Lou Ellen, the 6th child, was born about 1869 according to the census records (1870 - 2, 1880 - 11). She married a Butler. Thomas Jackson (Uncle Tom), the 7th child, was born in February 1876 according to the 1900 census but this does not agree with the 1880 census where he is listed as age 9. The 1900 census is probably in error since it would make him the same age as his younger brother Willie, so he was probably born about 1871. I do not have his date of death. William Carr (Uncle Willie), the 8th child, was born in June 1875 according to the 1900 census which is fairly consistent with the age 5 listed in the 1880 census. He died on 21 June 1955 and was buried at Grace Episcopal Church at Cismont, Va. on 23 June 1955. He never married. Margaret (Aunt Maggie), the 9th child, was born about 1876 according to the 1880 census. I do not have the date of her death. Katherine C. (Aunt Kate), the 10th and youngest child, was born in 1877 which is fairly consistent with the 1880 census which lists her age as 2. I have already given you her date of death in 1964. She married Henry Richard Bradbury (Cousin Richard), who was born in 1891 and died in 1959. They had no children. Cousin Richard was my mother's cousin and Aunt Kate was my father's uncle, and it was through them that my mother and father first met."

Margaret M. KENNEDY was born about 1832. She died in 1908 in Albemarle, , Virginia. Margaret married Abraham C. "Abram" WAYLAND about 1845 in , , Virginia.

NOTE: B, p.83

She died two months after her husband. Evaline Wayland (777), who was born 39 April 1832, married an unknown "Dr. Abram Wayland". The birthdate would be about right, but it is reaching too far to assume that Evaline and Margaret are one and the same, particularly since the obit on Evaline's husband does not list him as being a physician.

They had the following children:

  F i Queen Victoria WAYLAND
  M ii Robert Fisher WAYLAND
F iii Harriet Virginia WAYLAND was born in 1860.

Known as "Aunt Jennie" to R.Lee Wayland.
M iv Abraham C. WAYLAND Jr.
  F v Susan Mildred WAYLAND
  F vi Lou Ellen WAYLAND
M vii Thomas Jackson WAYLAND was born in Feb 1871 in , , Virginia.

NOTE: B, p.83. Father's obit says he lived in Albemarle, Va. Known as "Uncle Tom" by R. Lee Wayland.
M viii William Carr WAYLAND was born in Jun 1875 in , , Virginia. He died on 21 Jun 1955.

NOTE: B, p.83. Never married, according to R. Lee Wayland.
  F ix Margaret WAYLAND
  F x Katherine C. WAYLAND

Eliza A. WAYLAND [Parents] was born about 1828 in , , Virginia. She married Howard BERRY on 22 Dec 1848.

NOTE: A, p.103; Madison Co. Marriage Register 1, p.289.

I got this in 10/98:

Eliza Wayland married Howard Berry, Son of Rowland Berry, and they had
Franklin Berry, another Franklin Berry, Christopher C. Berry, Ezekiel Berry, Thronton Berry, and a baby berry name not known yet. And I think they had a
few more children but won't know until I look at the 1860 and 1870 census for Morgan County Va. Christopher had my great grandpa Michael Berry, and I don't the others in that line yet either. I am searching for them. Michael Berry married Nettie Wayland and they had 2 babies that died I believe because on my grandfathers birth certificate it states there were 3 children to the marriage but only one living that one being Melville Howard Berry he married Filomina Rita Telesca and they had Edward J Berry, Melville Howard Berry Jr, and Joan Rita Berry. Edward J Berry is my father.
Melville Howard Berry Jr. has no children.

I would like to get back further with Rowland and see who he married and find out from which Country they came from. I'll let you know.

Robert Benjamin WAYLAND [Parents] was born in 1830 in Madison Co., VA. He died after 1905 in Covesville, Albemarle Co., VA. Robert married Mary Susan WAYLAND on 23 Dec 1852 in , Madison Co., Virginia.

NOTE: A, pp.104,105

Married his "half" first cousin. Their fathers had same father, but different mother. He was reportedly a prisoner at Fort Delaware during Civil War. See his application for a Confederate pension in 1905 at this site: http://eagle.vsla.edu/conpen/virtua-basic.html

This site calles him "Sr." so he may have had a son by this name, although they will sometime give that title to distinguish him from someone with the same name who is not his son, but living in the same area.

This is from the National Archives. 7th Virginia Infantry, David F. Riggs (leader), page 98:

"Wayland, Robert B., b. 1834? five ft. eleven inches tall. Dark complexion, hazel eyes, black hair. Farmer. Enlisted 4/23/61 at Madison Court House in Co. K as Cpl. Promoted to Sgt., date unknown. Promoted to Lt. 4/26/62. POW at Seven Pines, 5/13/62 (Ft. Delaware) and exchanged (for Union prisoner) 8/5/62. Paroled 5/19/65 at Gordonsville."

I received the below email, and this is possibly another dtr:

Hi,
I was looking at Wayland queries and wonder if you have any information on the following:
Lucy Virginia Wayland born about 1871 in Madison County, Virginia, her father was R. B. Wayland and Susan. Lucy Virginia Wayland married A. E. McClary September 20, 1891 in Culpeper, Virginia. His birthplace was Culpeper, her birthplace was Madison, Virginia. Lucy Virginia Wayland McClary married, after A. E. McClary's death, Grover C. Tinley.
I am researching my McClary/McCleary/McClarney Family History and have verifications of Lucy Virginia Wayland's marriage - I cannot find who "R. B. and Susan Wayland" were.
Any help will be appreciated.

Jean McClary Stephenson (cousin through marriage to Lucy Virginia Wayland)

Mary Susan WAYLAND [Parents] was born in 1832 in , Madison, Virginia. She married Robert Benjamin WAYLAND on 23 Dec 1852 in , Madison Co., Virginia.

NOTE: A, pp.103,104,105

Married her first cousin. Actually, only her "half" first cousin, as their fathers had same father but different mothers.

They had the following children:

  F i Dolly Irene WAYLAND

William Richard RENALDS was born on 7 Nov 1833. He married Sidney Leah WAYLAND on 29 Apr 1852.

Melvin Montelle Renalds, PO Box 612, Quinton, VA 23141, gives this marriage. He further states that they had 8 children, all of whom married and raised families, and that Wm. and Sydney lived in Madison Co., VA until about 1868 and then in Page Co., VA.

Sidney Leah WAYLAND [Parents] was born on 8 Dec 1836 in , , Virginia. She died on 7 Feb 1914. Sidney married William Richard RENALDS on 29 Apr 1852.

NOTE: A, pp.103,104; B, p.86; Madison Co. Marriage Reg. 1, p.293.

Children are known. I have a copy of a photo of her taken about Dec., 1910, holding a grandson, Marvin Grandstaff, b. 17 May, 1910. For more information on her descendants, contact her grandson, Melvin Montelle Renalds, P.O. Box 612, Quinton, VA 23141. He also has history of the Renalds family back to Ireland.

Thomas M. WAYLAND [Parents] was born in 1841 in , , Virginia. He married Laura.

NOTE: A, pp.103,104; B, p.73

The Lexington, Mo., "Intelligencer", on Aug. 29, 1885 lists a Thomas Wayland attending a reunion of Veterans of the Confederacy in Higginsville, Mo. He was listed as "Thos. Wayland, Pvt., Co. K, 7th Va. Inf.", and being from Marshall, Mo. The only other person that I know of from this town so far is Bettie Wayland. There is no evidence that this is the same person as the A170 Thomas, but the age would be about right, and he was serving from Virginia. Later research finds him in the 1880 census of Saline Co., MO, Marshall Town, Vol. 30, ED 268, Sheet 9, Line 40. It gives him as age 33 and family as listed. Since the town of Marshall is the same, there is no doubt that this is him. However, the age is off, as he would have been age 39 if he is the same Thomas as A170, placing some doubt on this. Then again, the age of 33 would have made him only about 14 at the outbreak of the Civil War, so 39 is probably closer to correct, as he would have been 20 when the fighting started. (But they took them young.)

This is from the National Archives. 7th Virginia Infantry, David F. Riggs (leader), page 98:

"Wayland, Thomas M., b. 1841? Farmer. Enlisted 4/23/61 at Madison Court House. In Co. K as Pvt. Woulnded at Drewry's Bluff in hand, 5/16/64. Paroled 5/19/65 at Gordonsville. Living in Marshall, MO in 1885."

Laura was born in 1849 in , , Virginia. She married Thomas M. WAYLAND.

Other marriages:
LUDDEN, A. P.

NOTE: A, p.104

The above reference has Melissa in the family of Thomas (A88) by default, as the author could find no place else to place her. I really doubt that she is part of this family, as there were already 12 children. Also, she is not listed with the others on the 1850 census, and she should be with her parents prior to marriage. She married 3 Oct 1852 to John T. Anderson, Madison County Marriage Register 1, p.293. No parents were listed.

A. P. LUDDEN was born about 1830. He married Melissa L. WAYLAND on 3 Oct 1852 in , Madison Co., Virginia.

The data under Melissa is unclear as to whether she married Ludden or Anderson

Melissa L. WAYLAND was born about 1830 in , , Virginia. She married A. P. LUDDEN on 3 Oct 1852 in , Madison Co., Virginia.
