Found in 1860,1870 and 1880 Missouri censuses, occupation farmer. He must have served in the Civil War, as he is listed as a Pvt. in Co. C., Clark's Reg't. of the Mo. Infantry and in Co. D., 9th Mo. Infantry, according to the "Index of Compiled Confederate Records". Further info. available from the Office of the Missouri Adjutant General, 1717 Industrial Drive, Jefferson City, Missouri 65101. Two of his brothers also fought for the South. Robert's children are known only through censuses, and may have been more. Robert is also found in the 1900 census...see notes under son, George.

In 1870 MO. census, there is listed in her household a "Mary K. Hodges", probably her sister, but she is not
found with them in the 1880 census, which says that Louisa's father was born in Kentucky and her mother in Tenn. She is also found in the 1900 census.

They had the following children:

  M i Thomas James WAYLAND
F ii Susan A. WAYLAND was born in 1859 in , , Missouri.

May 1877 (listed as married...perhaps George's wife). I received an order for my book from Angie Kelley, PO Box 1216, Minnetouka, Minn. 55343, who says she is a granddaughter of George, and gives his middle name as Washington.

Most of the information on this line came directly to me from his granddaughter, Beulah Wayland Winn McInnish of Plainview, Texas. Joseph is listed in the 1870 with $10,000 real estate value...substantial for the post Civil War period. Joseph and his wife farmed in Missouri until advanced age, and then went to live in Plainview with their prominent physician son, Dr. James H. Wayland, where they died and are buried.

Catherine GATES was born on 8 Feb 1842 in , Macon Co., Missouri. She died in 1918 in Plainview, , Texas and was buried in Plainview, , Texas. Catherine married Joseph H. WAYLAND on 15 Jan 1857 in , Macon Co., Missouri.

NOTE: B, p.42. Her father was William Gates.

They had the following children:

M i Andrew M. WAYLAND was born on 14 Dec 1858 in , Randolph Co., Missouri. He died on 8 Mar 1859 in , Randolph Co., Missouri.

NOTE: B, p.42. Died in infancy.

  M iv Osmus Farley WAYLAND
  F v Lucy A. WAYLAND was born on 14 Dec 1867 in , , Missouri. She died in Jan 1870 in , , Missouri.

NOTE: B, p.42

The death of the first two children and this Lucy, when just past age 2, (when he was age 7) must have been an influence in the decision of James to become a doctor and try to save lives.

John H. ROTHWELL was born about 1832. He married Amanda S. WAYLAND on 24 Mar 1853 in , Randolph Co., Missouri.

NOTE: B, p.23,90

Marriage index incorrectly identifies him as "John Rockwell". I have more accurate information from a descendant, Mrs. Ficken, including their children. Also, Homer Rothwell Ficken, 3016 Gunnison Tr., Ft. Worth, TX 76116 is related. John H. had an older brother, James C., who married and left VA for Johnson Co., MO in 1839. John H. left sometime after the 1850 VA census for MO also and settled in Chariton Co.

In 9/98, I received this email inquiry:

Hi John,

Just curious - sent an entry for a shirt-tail kin Chariton Co, Mo CW Vet to Kath Heidel's site, and noticed your posting there:

John H. Rothwell was a bro of my GGF James C. Rothwell of Johnson Co, and John married Amanda Wayland in Randolph Co 1853. They were old neighbors from Albemarle Co, Va and John is said to have come west with the Wayland's.

All of which you likely know, but wondered if Amanda was an aunt or older sis of your ansc?

They had the following children:

  F i Adelaid F. "Ada" ROTHWELL
M ii William F. ROTHWELL was born about 1856.

Also in the book, "A History of Baptists in Missouri" by R. S. Duncan, 1882. It was republished by: "Church History, Research & Archives, Rt.4, Box 38, Lafayette, TN 37083." It talks about the presidents of Mt. Pleasant College, and mentions Rev, W.R. Rothwell as president for a term ending in 1866. I don't know how he fits in either.

Her husband died early, leaving her with five children, listed by initial only in 1880 census, in household of her brother, William (or vice versa...they always listed the man first then). She is not with him on next census, so may have remarried, although I did not search the censuses for the Hall name.

James Henry WAYLAND Dr. [Parents] was born on 22 Apr 1863 in , , Missouri. He died on 6 Feb 1948 in Plainview, , Texas and was buried in Plainview, , Texas. James married Sarah Frances TUCKER on 27 Dec 1883.

NOTE: B, p.42,58,59

Graduated from the Kentucky School of Medicine in 1886. Moved to Texas and in April 1891 brought his family to Hale Co., Texas, being forced by ill health to move West. Settled in the Plainview area, which was wild in those days, starting life in a two-room shack, the only doctor in the area (previous one having been murdered). His business prospered, and in 1907 he built the Wayland Hotel, which provided an income for him in his later years when his health failed due to diabetes. He traveled by horse and buggy in the early days, with the help of a compass to get across the fields of grass, as there were few roads. Sometimes a rancher would call for the doctor and send a field hand to plow a furrow to the nearest road for him to follow. Winters were very severe, and it is a miracle he did not freeze to death on some of these trips.

He helped found Wayland Baptist University, his namesake located in Plainview, giving $100,000 to get it started in 1908. There is a biography on Dr. Wayland in the "Hale County History", Vol. III, 1971, available from the college library. The information on him and his family were obtained from his granddaughter, Mrs. Beulah McInnish, 904 Nassau St., Plainview, TX 79072

WAYLAND, J. H. (1863-1948). J. H. Wayland, physician, Baptist religious leader, and founder of Wayland Baptist Collegeqv was born in Randolph County, Missouri, on April 22, 1863. He attended Central College of Missouri and graduated from the Kentucky School of Medicine. He moved to Texas in 1883. On December 27, 1883, he married Sarah Frances Tucker at Weatherford, Texas. After practicing medicine in Parker and Hunt counties, he moved to Plainview in April 1891. There his practice covered a radius of 250 miles of unbroken territory, with no roads across the prairie. He owned and operated the Wayland Drug Store and continued his medical practice at Plainview for thirty years. He founded the Wayland Baptist College with a gift of thirty acres of land from his ranch and $100,000 in cash. Dr. Wayland worked to secure the building of a railroad into Plainview and was active in all community projects. After retiring from his medical practice, he built and operated the Wayland Hotel. He died in Plainview on February 6, 1948, survived by his widow, two sons, and four daughters.
