Henry Toulman FORT [Parents] was born on 28 Sep 1816 in , , Tennessee. He died on 4 Jul 1889 in Moberly, Randolph Co., Missouri and was buried in Oakland Cem., Moberly. Henry married Frances Jane LOWRY on 2 Jan 1845 in , Howard Co., Missouri.
Other marriages:LOWRY, Ann Eliza
In the book, "Old Families of Randolph County, Missouri" it states:
"During the time of the "gold rush", Henry went to Montana where his brother Andrew Jackson Fort lived. He owned and worked a gold mine called "Orofina" (fine gold) and at the birth of his daughter sent a lump of gold asking that a ring be made for the baby and that she be named Orafina [Orofina?]. Henry Fort owned and lived on a farm at a place near Huntsville called "Fort Henry" and here he raised thoroughbred horses. Later he was in partnership with his wife's son-in-law Henry Wayland in a rake factory. At the time of his death he resided at 617 West Carpenter St., Moberly, Mo. He was for many years a prominent and influential citizen of Randolph County."
Note: B, p. 55. Henry Harrison Wayland was married in home of "H.T. Fort in Fort Henry, by Rev. Y.R. Pitts in 1871."
On 1870 Randolph Co. Missouri census, he is found on p.77, farmer, born in Tenn., real estate worth $12,000 (substantial for right after the war), and lists his wife and J.T. Fort, age 16 male, Elsie (?) Fort age 1 female and Bell Jackson age 17 female, and A. Jackson age 12 female. Mr. Fort was a partner in the ill-fated haystacker manufacturing plant.

Anna was HT Fort's second wife. His first wife was Anna's sister, Francis J. Lowry. Before Francis died, she asked her sister to marry Henry and raise her children by him. There is a bit more on the family in the book but nothing on the Jackson husband that Anna married first. The book lists Anna's children from her first marriage as - John, Allie, Bill Wayland, and Fannie Hammett.
-=--=-=-On the 1850 Howard Co., MO census, p. 189a is H.T. Fort, age 30, born TN, Frances J. Fort, age 21, born MO. H.T. is a farmer with $8,000 worth, substantial for that time. There are no children as yet...just the two of them in a household alone.
One source gives the dod of wife Frances as 8 Dec 1866, and his marriage 1 Jan 1867 to Anna Eliza Lowry. One gives marriage 1 Dec, another 1 Jan

From: Carole [email protected]Okay John here is the FORT info from the 1860 Census. Both families are in Salt Spring Township. The Post Office listed is Huntsville. Henry Fort is on the very bottom of page 930. He is listed as H.T. Fort age 42. I cannot make out what his occupation is. I know it isnt farmer. He is listed as having a real estate value of $8,800 and a personal estate valued at $63,700. His birthplace is listed as Tenn. His wife is listed as Frances J. Fort age 32 born in Missouri. The only other person listed in the house is John T. age 6 born in Missouri. I am fairly certain that middle initial is a T and not a J. The "J" in Frances J. Fort is quite distinct and does not look at all like the middle initial used for John. His middle initial resembles the "F" used to denote a person as female in the census except that isnt crossed like an "F". Looks like the book "Old Families of Randolph County, Missouri" was wrong
about his middle initial. I looked for other members of Henry's household on the next page but the top of 931 starts out with a new family.William Fort is listed on page 931 - dwelling number 844 the second family on the page. His age is listed as 66, his occupation farmer, real estate value $8,575, personal estate value $31,100, birthplace Tenn. Patsy Fort is listed as age 64, birthplace Ky. The rest of the house occupants are listed as follows:
Amanda Fort (female, their daughter I presume) age 40, birthplace MO.
Francis M. Baker (male) age 26, occupation clerk, place of birth MO.
James M. Cairy (male) age 19, occupation clerk, place of birth MO.

James J. Lafon (sp?) (male) age 10, place of birth MO
Frances A. Burton (female) age 18, place of birth MOThat's all for the household. Quite an interesting mix dont you think? I have no idea who the Baker and Cairy people are. I have William's daughter, Amanda Fort, marrying a James Laton and perhaps the two Lafon children listed are hers. I have NO idea who Frances Burton is or what she is doing in the household. I can only suppose that she may be a grand daughter of William and Patsy - the product of the marriage between Martha Emily Fort and Ambrose Burton. I have two sons for that marriage and no daughters. I guess this

According to the book, "Old Families of Randolph County, Missouri" on her death bed she asked her widowed sister, "Annie Eliza, then a widow with four grown children to marry Henry and raise her son, John." She is with H.T. in the 1850 census...see note under him. In another place, her dob is 18 Nov 1827, and
her dod is 8 Dec 1866. Should be able to check date on stone in cemetary.

Other marriages:JACKSON, Abel R.
Marriage record has her name as "Anne Eliza Loury."
The book, "Old Families of Randolph County, Missouri" has much written
under Ann's Fort husband. It is written by private individuals and is not always accurate. For instance, it says that this Ann and her husband were parents of "John and Allie Jackson and Bill Wayland and Fannie Hammett."
There is no way that a man would change his last name when married, so this "Bill" is referring to "Belle" who m. Henry Harrison Wayland. I had John and Allie Jackson down, but not Fannie, who apparently m. a Hammett. I have added her and will try to find out more about her.Note: B, p.55. We have a "jet black comb, belonging to Grandma Fort." I believe that picture 1122.jpg is of her as on the back of it Lloyd Wayland
had written "Pa & Grandma Fort, mother's mother."My father remembers Belle having two brothers, John and Allie Jackson. The 1870 Randolph Co. MO census, p. 77, shows J.T. Fort, age 16 male, Elsie (?) Fort, age 1 female, Bell Jackson, age 17 female, and A. Jackson, age 12 female (?). This may have been an error on the part of the census taker in the sex. They were found in the H.T. Fort household.
The 1860 census for Howard Co., MO has the household of Susan Jackson, age 77, VA; Ann E., 30, MO; John L. 10; Fannie B. 8; Anne B. 6; Alfred 4; William 10; John 8. The last two were sons of Milton G. Jackson. The others consisted of this Ann and her children after she was a widow.
Ann was a fiery Conferate sympathizer. Family history says that once when forced to feed some Union soldiers who descended upon her household uninvited, she slammed the plate down in front of one with the comment, "How do you know that I didn't spit in this"
One source gives her date of marriage to H.T. Fort as 1 Dec 1867, and another as 4 Dec 1867, and a third as 1 Jan 1867. Should be able to get marriage records to show which is correct. One source has her first marriage as 3 Aug 1848.

William FORT Dr. [Parents] [scrapbook] was born on 19 Oct 1793 in Robertson Co., TN. He died on 23 Aug 1881 in Randolph Co., MO and was buried in Oakland Cem., Moberly, MO. William married Martha Frances Sugg GORHAM on 14 Mar 1815/1816 in , Robertson Co., TN.
From "Old Familes of Randolph County, Missouri":
"In the year of 1820, Dr. William Fort, the first physician to locate in Randolph County, settled on land about 3 1/2 miles west of the site of Huntsville and he and Thomas Gorham established and operated salt works at the Salt Spring now known as Randolph Springs. These works they continued to operate for many years thereafter, furnishing salt for a wide stretch of surrounding territory."
He was a veteran of the War of 1812, serving with Harrison and Jackson. He was a representative in the legislature a number of years.
This was in the North Missouri Herald:

I received this 3/99 from "Leslie (Bridges) Kohler"
: "Your Dr Wm FORT was a brother to my Whitmil Hill FORT." This would need to be confirmed.
Martha Frances Sugg GORHAM [Parents] "Patsy" was born on 10 Jul 1796 in , Logan Co., KY and was christened in 1817 in Baptist Church, Robertson Co., TN. She died on 4 Oct 1881/1882 in Moberly, Randolph Co., Missouri. Patsy married William FORT Dr. on 14 Mar 1815/1816 in , Robertson Co., TN.
This is the way the name was given in the "Old Families of Randolph County, Missouri." Nothing is said of her. Marriage date is given as 1815 one place and 1816 another, with same month and day. She was known as "Patsy" and that is the way she is on the 1860 census (see note under son H.T.) and the 1850 census (see note under husband). Letter from her sister calls her "Patsy" also and says that she had 7 children. The Fort book gives her dod as 5 Oct 1883.
The letter from her sister (see father's notes) says that: "Patsy married Dr. William Fort and they had seven children." Nothing is known of the additional child, who may have died in infancy.
They had the following children:

John married Nancy Malinda GORHAM on 1 May 1821 in , Howard Co., Missouri. He had other parents.
Other marriages:HUBBARD, Harriet
The photo I have of his tombstone shows that he died 12 Jun 1863, age 83 yrs, 5 mons, 11 days. My date calculator gives a dob of 25 Jun 1780 with that. This does not match the dob on the sampler of 31 Dec 1780, nor my dob that I have had of 1 Jan 1780.
On p. 189a of the 1850 Howard Co. Census is John J. Lowery, age 24, and Wilmouth E. Lowery, age 16. Value $3,000, both born in MO. They are right next to H.T. Fort and his wife Frances J. Lowry, so it is likely that they are on land given them both by John and Frances's father and are brother & sister.
His occupation was doctor and he was a state legislator. He is on the list for the "1826 MO House of Representatives" for Howard County.
Another source gives marriage date to Nancy Gorham as 1820.
On p. 149a of the 1850 Howard Co. Census at:
https://sites.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/mo/howard/census/1850/149a.gif
is found John J. Lowery, age 66, physician, b. Penn. There is no wife in his family. Others are: Mary Lowery, age 14 f; M.M. Lowery, age 13 f; Arameda Lowery, age 11 f; Lurany Lowery, age 8 f, all born in MO. Since he has the same name, there is a strong possibility that he is the father of the above John J. Lowery, age 24. The book mentioned under his dtrs. says that Frances was "daughter of Dr. John Lowry and Nancy Melinda (Gorham) Lowry. Since this man was a physician in the census, I am using his birth date and place of birth
In 12/98, I got this from: Olan L. Smith:
John J. Lowry citizen of Co. died at Fort Henry, Rnd.Co. MO, on the 12th inst. He leaves many friends and relatives. He was brought to this Co. and interred on the farm of W. P. Jackson on the 15th inst.---Fayette Advt. PETITION OF
According to Old Families of Randolph County, MO, by Howard Marshall Col. Alexander Lowry of Pennsylvania is listed as the father of Dr. John Jefferson Lowry. However, upon researching Pennsylvania records (History of PA, Egle; Biog. Annals of Lancaster Co. PA) I find no mention of a son named John. Col. Alexander Lowry is well documented by the DAR and in Lancaster County and Pennsylvania State histories. Surely, if John was the son of Col. Alexander and was born in Philadelphia in 1780 (during the Revolution) he is not the issue of Alexander's marriage to Ann West Aldrick for it is stated in several reference that Alexander and Ann had only one child, Frances.
Given Alexander's age of 53 years in 1780, and that he had a son named Alexander, born 1756 by his first wife Mary Waters, it seems more logical to place John Jefferson Lowry as the son of this second Alexander Lowry, which would make him the grandson of Col. Alexander Lowry. As of Sept. 1998 it also seems logical that he is the son of William B. Lowry, Sr. (Lazarus and Ann Boggs) the half-brother of Col. Alexander Lowry. (As of 2-Dec-1998 I have received new information through e-mail that their is a biography of Millard Fillmore Lowry which states that he is the son of John Jefferson and Nancy Malinda and that his father immigrated to the US from Scotland. I have not been able to find this biography or confirm this statement.)
Of early record are two letters written by John Jefferson Lowry to the Missouri Gazette in St. Louis, Missouri Territory on October 8, 1816 and
"March 3th 1817" and marked Fort Osage. (J.J.Lowry wrote many letters to newspapers during his lifetime.) We know that Dr. John J. Lowry was educated in Ohio, attending medical school in Cincinnati, and that the Missouri Gazette records his title as Dr. John J. Lowry, A.S.M. (letter dated Oct.8, 1816).Fort Osage was built in 1808 and evacuated in 1813 during the War of 1812, then reoccupied by 1816. During the evacuation, the fort was removed to Arrow Rock and presumably when they returned to Fort Osage they took with them a thirty-two year old doctor by the name of John Jefferson Lowry. The Fort Osage letter places him in the fort, Missouri Territory during this period.
Later, Olan sent me a photo of his tombstone (9120.jpg) and the following:
John Jefferson attended medical school in Cincinnati, Ohio and first married Harriet Hubbard in 1818. On December 23, 1819 he is listed on a petition of the inhabitants of Howard Land Dist. The petition was a complaint to the President of the U.S. "stating that the Register for the District had been absent for some time, leaving the office in charge of his son, Henry Carroll, and that there were many irregularities in the issuing of certificates for the purchase of land,... destroying confidence of the public in the titles to lands of the U.S., etc..." (Territorial Papers of the U.S., Vol. XV-The Territory of Louisiana Missouri 1815-21, pp. 556-561).
In 1821 John Jefferson married secondly Miss Nancy Malinda Gorham daughter of Thomas Gorham and Sally W. (Sugg) Gorham of Randolph Co., Mo. Sally's sister Martha (Patsy) Frances Sugg married Dr. William Fort one the first settlers of Randolph Co. They had
Thirteen children before the death of Nancy in March 11, 1844.In 1826 Dr. John Jefferson Lowry was elected by the citizens of Howard County to the new state legislature in Jefferson City where he served for one and a half terms. He was recalled by the voters of Howard County for supporting in a secret caucus a different state treasurer than had been appointed by the legislature.
In 1830 (according to the History of Missouri, by Houck p. 251)
"Dr. J. J. Lowry, of Franklin, Philip Cole of Potosi, and Joseph Hertick," (other histories substitute Abel R. Corbin for Philip Cole) were appointed by Governor Dunkin to a committee to formulate a "common school system for Missouri."
In 1839 he was appointed to the first board of curator's of the University of Missouri (according to the History of Boone Co., pp. 230,252) and was the beginning of a long association of the Lowry family with the University of Missouri. A grandson, Thomas J. Lowry of Randolph County, (b. 11/29/1850) was elected June 1877 as Professor of Civil Engineering at the University Missouri, Columbia Campus. Thomas' other honors include: Member of California Academy of Science at San Francisco; inventor of a sextant for measuring any angle from 0 to 180 degrees; inventor of the protracting sextant and other sextants and protractors; and elected a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (U.S.
Biographical Dictionary, pp. 849-851).In the 1850's John Jefferson Lowry moved from Howard County to Randolph County. Here he would live out the remainder of his life expressing his political views by letters to newspapers and to political friends in the state. He died 6/12/1863 at Fort Henry, Randolph Co., Mo. "He was brought to this Co., and interred on the farm of W.P. Jackson on the 15th inst. Fayette Advt.", The Missouri Statesman, 6/26/1863.
Family records reportedly say Millard Filmore Lowry is also a son, but no census records show him living with John J. Lowry.
THE INHABITANTS OF HOWARD LAND DIST., 23 Dec 1819 taken from "The Territorial Papers of the U.S." Vol. XV - The Terr. of Louisiana-Missouri 1815-21.,556-561 lists John J. Lowry as signing a complaint ...
The booklet, "Original Land Purchases of Randolph County, Missouri" by Cecille Taylor Rice, pub. by the Randolph County Historical Society has this on him:
Lowry, John J. purchased 8 large acreage tracts from 22 Apr 1838 to 1847. There is a Lowry, John I. who bought 3 large tracts from 1831-1841.
"Old Families of Randolph County, Missouri" states on p. 177 that he "attended medical school in Cincinnati, Ohio and imigrated to St. Louis, MO, and then went on to Old Franklin in Howard County and was one of the first pioneers to settle in that vicinity. He conducted the first land office at Old Franklin for a time and later moved to Fayette, MO, where he was for many years president of the First Bank established in Fayette. He was elected to the legislature often by his constituents. During his entire life in MO he
was an active, influential and leading mind in politics of the state."In 3/99 I got this from Olan:
"Here is an interesting piece of genealogy sent to me by Nellie. Thought
you might find this of interest.Hi Olan,
I know that we have not chatted in some time. Hope that all is well with you and your family. I received a message this week that made me think of you and your family. This may be a stretch but I wanted to share it with you and see what your thoughts might be.

What a great family with birthdates and so early. The only name of the above that came anywhere close to a match in my files is John J b 1780 and so is your Dr. John Jefferson Lowry of MO, born in West Philadelphia, PA 1780. Lowry Day did not know the location of this family but assumes that it was in the Washington DC/Philadelphia/VA area.
I just took a long look at Col. Alexander Lowry of Lancaster Co PA files. He had a brother John who married an Elizabeth, this John was supposedly killed by the Indians about 1750. Do you have any ideas?
If this works out, it would add 2 or 3 generations to your charts and you have family stories that you are descended from Col. Alexander Lowry.
Hoping to hear from you.

Nancy Malinda GORHAM [Parents] was born on 15 Mar 1806. She died on 11 Mar 1844 in , Randolph Co., Missouri and was buried in Jackson Cem., Fayette, Missouri. Nancy married John Jefferson LOWRY Dr. on 1 May 1821 in , Howard Co., Missouri.
The good doctor married this girl when she was age 14 and he was age 40. Not too unusual in those days, but would get him in trouble nowadays. Back then, women had no occupational hope and marriage to a successful man was all that was important to the girl and her parents. Francis McFarland, preacher of the gospel, performed the ceremony. Hopefully love was in her heart. Another source gives her dod 14 Mar 1844, and marriage date as 1 May 1820. That was: "Old Families of Randolph County, Missouri"
Letter from her sister (see father's notes) says "Malinda married Dr. John Lowery and had 12 children" so these are probably legitimate.

Howard married Lo after first wife died. He had children by first wife, but none by Lo. He survived her. He was a millionaire, with many business interests. At one time he owned the third largest turkey farm in the U.S., and the largest pheasant farm and owned Banquet Foods, which marketed frozen dinners nationwide. Banquet was later bought out by a large concern. He also had the largest dairy in the county, processed eggs, etc. I remember touring his farms in his cadillac as a young boy, riding over the grassy hills. (Those cars in the late 1940's had a high ground clearance.). He was quite a fine Christian gentleman.
There is an advertisement in Dad's 1922 HS Year Book for the F.M. Stamper Co., advertising country butter. This was the company that he owned, named after his father, who founded it.
On the Christmas 1956 holiday, after Lo's passing that August, he wrote the following letter: "To All the Wayland Family... For nearly a half century, the Christmas period has always been a sad period for me, though it is supposed to be a merry one. At any rate it has alway recalled to me the most precious memories of my life, and today I just want to tell it to someone. While today all of you are away from Moberly, I still am with all of you in Spirit, and I wish for each of you the very best. Sincerely, Howard."
