Fielding Henry "Marc" WAYLAND [Parents] 1, 2 was born on 17 Feb 1843 in Virginia. He died on 29 Jan 1918 in Madison Co., Virginia and was buried in Brightwood. Fielding married Annie Elizabeth CARPENTER on 24 Dec 1867 in , Madison Co., Virginia.

The "Index to Compiled Confederate Records" lists a Fielding H. Wayland as serving as a Pvt. in the VA. Light Artillary in the Civil War. Family history says that one of his brothers fought for the Union. Joseph would have been the only one old enough, and he was only 14 when the war started in 1861. The Dove book is: "Madison County Homes, A Collection of Pre-Civil War Homes and Family Heritages", by Vee Dove. This is a large "coffee-table" style book with illustrations of homes on every page and a lot of genealogical information on Madison County, VA., published privately by the author, who resides in Madison County. Library of Congress Catalog Card Number: 75-28573. I visited her home and picked up one and it is a beautiful book, quite heavy and professionally bound with even a book cover. A bargain.

Dr. John W. Wayland's notes state, "April 14, 1929, at Brightwood, Madison Co., VA, I found the graves of 5 Waylands:
F.H. Wayland, b. Feb. 17, 1843, d. Jan. 29, 1918
Anna E. Wayland, b. Apr 30, 1849, d. Oct 11, 1926
Mary E. Wayland, b. July 6, 1879, d. Dec 16, 1911
Bertha Wayland, b. Oct 24, 1883, d. Mar 18, 1926
E. Maude Wayland, b. Aug 4, 1887, d. Aug 10, 1927
For one or two summers Maude Wayland was a student in the State Normal School here in Harrisonburg."

At this site: http://eagle.vsla.edu/conpen/virtua-basic.html
there is the actual record of his widow applying for a Confederate widow's pension on 16 Mar 1918. The copy is shown at the site, with valuable information.

It also has his own application earlier, in 1904 at age 62 for his own pension...reason "broken leg" and witnessed by a Hoffman and a Carpenter. His comrades who said he served in that company were "Fry," "Crigler" and "Utz."

Annie Elizabeth CARPENTER [Parents] 1, 2 was born on 30 Apr 1849 in , , Virginia. She died on 11 Oct 1926 in Madison Co., Virginia and was buried in Brightwood, Madison Co., Virginia. Annie married Fielding Henry "Marc" WAYLAND on 24 Dec 1867 in , Madison Co., Virginia.

They had the following children:

  M i Edgar WAYLAND was born about 1869 in , , Virginia.

NOTE: B, p.81; Dove, p.349. Lived entire life in Roanoke, VA.
  M ii John WAYLAND
  F iii Fanny Elizabeth WAYLAND
M iv James Henry "Jim" WAYLAND was born about 1877 in , , Virginia.

NOTE: B, p.81; Dove, p.349
F v Mary E. WAYLAND was born on 6 Jul 1879 in , , Virginia. She died on 16 Dec 1911 in , , Virginia and was buried in (see notes), , Virginia.

NOTE: B, p.81; Dove, p.349

Mary was buried at her father's homeplace next to him and her mother and also her twin sister, Annie, and Bertha. The three girls never married. A photo of this house is on p. 348 of Dove book, and it still stands in Madison Co., VA, and is known by its original owner, "The Old Captain Andrew Carpenter Home", who was Mary's maternal grandfather.
F vi Martha WAYLAND was born on 6 Jul 1879 in , , Virginia.

NOTE: B, p.81; Dove, p.348. Died unmarried.

Andrew J. CARPENTER [Parents] was born in 1846 in , , Virginia. He married Mary A. WAYLAND on 8 Nov 1869 in , Howard Co., Missouri.

NOTE: A, p.48; B, p.28,89

The above "A" reference (Holtzclaw) did not know whom Andrew married, but has it listed that he married "Mary E. (UNK.)". I am fairly certain that he is the one and the same as the "A.J. Carpenter" who is shown marrying "Miss M.A. Wayland" on 8 Nov 1869 in Howard Co., MO., Vol. 4, p.144 of Marriage Index.
For evidence, I point to the fact that Andrew's half-sister, Annie Elizabeth married the brother of Mary A. Wayland, Fielding Henry Wayland. The middle initial is off in Holtzclaw...it was "A", not "E". It was quite common in those days for families to marry into each other like this.

Mary A. WAYLAND [Parents] was born in 1845 in , , Virginia. She married Andrew J. CARPENTER on 8 Nov 1869 in , Howard Co., Missouri.

NOTE: A, p.99; B, p.27,28,89

Her brother married a Carpenter, and she is the most likely candidate for the marriage listed in Howard Co., MO, Marriage Index, Vol. 4, p.144, as "Miss M.A. Wayland and A.J. Carpenter" on 8 Nov 1869. However, there is another Mary A. Wayland (B80), but there is also another marriage for her separately.

Joseph R. WAYLAND [Parents] was born on 17 Jun 1847. He died on 22 Sep 1894 and was buried in Mt. Pleasant Cem, New Franklin, Missouri. Joseph married Isabella Y. GIBSON on 16 Nov 1876 in , Howard Co., Missouri.

NOTE: A, p.100; B, p.27,28,65,89

Dates are from tombstone. See "Howard Co., Missouri Cemetary Records, Vol. 2, by Ellsberry. He and wife are shown in 1880 Howard Co. census in the Franklin Township, p. 7, with first two children listed. I later found the obit on the third girl, Josie. The obit said that she was preceeded in death by three sisters and a brother. He may have fought for the Union in the Civil War, as the biography on Nathaniel's grandson, Marvin Wayland, says that Nathaniel had two sons fighting on opposite sides.

Isabella Y. GIBSON was born in 1848. She married Joseph R. WAYLAND on 16 Nov 1876 in , Howard Co., Missouri.

NOTE: B, p.28,89

They had the following children:

  F i Sadie M. WAYLAND
  F ii Emma L. WAYLAND
F iii Martha WAYLAND was born about 1881.
M iv Robert WAYLAND was born about 1883.

Wife unk. Reportedly had children: Joseph Henry, Mildred, Roberta, and Winnia? and source was ancestry.com, submitted by: [email protected]
F v Josie Edna WAYLAND was born on 13 Jul 1885 in New Franklin, , Missouri. She died on 14 Oct 1981 in Boonville, , Missouri.

Here is her obituary:

"Miss Josie Edna Wayland, 96, died Wednesday, Oct 14,1981 at Rest Haven Nursing Home in Boonville. Services for Miss Wayland will be at 2 PM Friday at the Markland Funeral Home in New Franklin with the Rev Arthur Barkey officiating. Burial will be in Mt Pleasant Cemetery in New Franklin. Visitation will be after 10 AM Friday at the funeral home. Miss Wayland was born July 13,1885 in New Franklin, the daughter of Joseph R. and Belle Gibson Wayland. She lived
all of her life in New Franklin. She was a retired bookkeeper for Exchange Bank in New Franklin and was a member of the New Franklin United Methodist Church.

Miss Wayland is survived by a sister, Mrs. Kenneth (Belle) Christopher of Hernado, Fla. She was preceeded in death by three sisters and a brother."
  F vi Isabelle "Belle" WAYLAND

William T. WAYLAND [Parents] was born in 1850. He died in 1926 and was buried in Fayette, , Missouri. William married Emma E. "Betty" SMITH on 13 May 1877 in , Howard Co., Missouri.

NOTE: B, p.27,28,48,89

Probably named after mother's brother, William T. Crigler, who is shown with his father and mother at age 35 in the 1850 Madison Co. MO census. There is a marriage of W.T. Wayland to Elsie May Ragan in 1900 and I am going to put it down as his second marriage because it fits...his wife died in 1897...but there is no actual knowledge that this is the same Wayland.

His first marriage is given "Married Sunday evening, May 13, in the church at this place (New Franklin) by the Rev. J. Jones, Mr. W.T. Wayland to Miss Emma Smith, both of this vicinity." Printed in the "Howard County Advertiser" 1877.

Emma E. "Betty" SMITH was born in 1859. She died in 1897 and was buried in Fayette, , Missouri. Emma married William T. WAYLAND on 13 May 1877 in , Howard Co., Missouri.

NOTE: B, p.48,89

Marriage shows her as "Betty", but tombstone says "Emma E.". The "E" probably stood for Elizabeth, hence the "Betty". Dates are from tombstone, as listed in Elsberry's "Howard County Cemetary Records", Vol. 1. There may have been other children besides the two unmarried females buried next to them listed here. But, another news article says Emma:

"Married Sunday evening, May 13, in the church at this place (New Franklin), by the Rev. J. JONES, Mr. W. T. WAYLAND to Miss Emma SMITH, both of this
vicinity."

They had the following children:

F i Nellie M. WAYLAND was born in 1878. She died in 1903 and was buried in Fayette, , Missouri.

NOTE: B, p.48
F ii Fern D. WAYLAND was born in 1883. She died in 1901 and was buried in Fayette, , Missouri.

NOTE: B, p.48. Died about age 18; sister about age 25.

John W. WAYLAND [Parents] was born on 8 Jun 1852 in , Madison Co., Virginia. He died on 3 Oct 1917. John married Anna L. TODD on 11 Jan 1877 in , Howard Co., Missouri.

NOTE: A, p.100; B, p.27,28,49,89

The book, "History of Chariton and Howard Counties", Missouri, pub. about 1923, has a biography of John on pp 335-336. It says that John came to MO with his parents from VA in 1869 and lists his wife and six children. His wife was still living at time of printing at 68 years of age, and in New Franklin, MO., probably with her daughter, Estelle. It says that John was a Democrat and a member of the Methodist Church and the Knights of the Pythias.

The book, "History of Chariton and Howard Counties" says that Anna's father was one of the pioneer settlers of Howard County.

They had the following children:

Other marriages:

NOTE: B, p.81; Dove, p.349; A, p.49,99

The A reference above is "Germanna Record No. 11, Carpenter and Wayland Descendants", April 1968, pub. by the Memorial Foundation of The Germanna Colonies in Virginia, Inc., Box 693, Culpeper Va. 22701. It gives all of the Carpenter ancestors back from Andrew (Andrew, Andrew, Andrew, John) and lists all the siblings, wives, etc. There are too many to list here.
