Immigrant to Virginia prior to1720, Thomas Wieland and related lines

Hesekiah SHACKLETT was born about 1818. He married Emily WAYLAND on 6 Jun 1848.

NOTE: B, p.26

Emily WAYLAND [Parents] 1 was born on 19 Apr 1819 in , , Virginia. She died on 22 Jun 1873 in , , Missouri. Emily married Hesekiah SHACKLETT on 6 Jun 1848.

Fountain Finks WAYLAND [Parents] 1 was born on 17 Nov 1821 in , , Virginia. He died on 8 Nov 1899 in , , Missouri and was buried in Smith's Chapel, Howard Co., Missouri. Fountain married Semira Moberly SMITH on 23 Nov 1842 in , Boone Co., Missouri.

Twin to James. His middle name comes from his grandmother's maiden name. Much of information came from "History of Boone County, Missouri", and "Missouri and Missourians, Vol.5, p.569" and family information from the Grigsby book and directly from Mrs. Gertrude Craig, a descendant. Another book of gravestones in the cemetary gives his dates as 21 Nov. 1821 to 8 Nov. 1897. Don't know which is correct. Also his marriage is given as 23 Nov 1842.

The Boone Co., MO obituaries located on ancestry.com had this:
"Wayland, Fountain Finley, b. 17 Nov 1821, d. 8 Nov 1899." The different middle name is odd.

He is found in the 1860 Boone Co. Census on p. 981 in the Perche Township.

Semira Moberly SMITH was born on 23 Nov 1825 in , Howard Co., Missouri. She died on 17 Jul 1887 and was buried in Smith's Chapel, Howard Co., Missouri. Semira married Fountain Finks WAYLAND on 23 Nov 1842 in , Boone Co., Missouri.

NOTE: B, p.45. According to a book listing gravestones, hers says that she died 17 July 1887 at age 61 years, 7 months, 18 days. On her wedding papers, her first name is spelled "Samyria."

They had the following children:

  F i Permelia Jane WAYLAND
  F ii Sarah E. WAYLAND

  F iv Cornelia A. WAYLAND
  M v James Watson WAYLAND
  M vi Henry Ogden WAYLAND
M vii Edgar Oscar WAYLAND 1 was born on 1 Nov 1859 in , Howard Co., Missouri. He died on 8 Oct 1867 and was buried in Smith Chapel Ch., Howard Co., Missouri.

A book listing gravestones says that he died 8 Oct 1867, age 7 years, 11 months and identifies him as son of F.F. and S.
  F viii Emma B. WAYLAND

F x Manie (Mamie?) Clark WAYLAND
F xi Virginia WAYLAND "Virgie" 1 was born on 5 Jan 1871 in , Howard Co., Missouri. She died on 19 Nov 1872 and was buried in Smith Chapel Cem, Howard Co., Missouri.

James is twin to Fountain. This may be related to him. It is from the "Moberly Daily Monitor" newspaper:

Eliza ARNOLD was born on 14 Oct 1823. She died on 13 Dec 1900 in , Howard Co., Missouri and was buried in Oakland Cem., Howard Co., Missouri. Eliza married James S. WAYLAND on 8 Apr 1841.

Found in 1850,1860,1870,1880 Howard Co., MO censuses. She may be the one: Wayland, Eliza A. -- 14 Oct 1823-13 Dec 1900; burial Oakland Cem. There is an Angeline Arnold, age 33, with Eliza, age 26, on the 1850 census, and this is most likely her sister.

They had the following children:

  F i Sarah WAYLAND
F ii Frances E. "Nancy" WAYLAND
  F iii Mary E. WAYLAND
  M iv Fountain W. WAYLAND
  M v Joel M. WAYLAND
  M vi Albert WAYLAND
  F vii Joella WAYLAND
  F viii Annie Eliza WAYLAND
  F ix Isabella Ellen WAYLAND
F x Cora WAYLAND was born in 1863. She died after 1930.

NOTE: B, p.47,48

Is called "Miss Cora Wayland" of Nashville, TN" in sister Frances' obit in 1930, so she must have been living with her sister "Mrs. Will Hunter" (Eva).
  F xi Eva WAYLAND

George W. NAYLOR was born in 1837. He died before 1870. George married Jane D. WAYLAND on 16 Apr 1862 in , Howard Co., Missouri.

See notes under wife.

Jane D. WAYLAND [Parents] was born on 12 Jul 1834. She died after 1900. Jane married George W. NAYLOR on 16 Apr 1862 in , Howard Co., Missouri.

George may have died in the Civil War (just a guess). Jane apparently never remarried, but is shown in her widowed mother's household in 1870 census, with her dtr Katie, age 6. Katie is living next to her mother on the 1880 census, with Katie, age 16. Jane and her unmarried sister Mary Wayland are shown living together in 1900 census, alone in the same household. Mary was in her parent's household every census.

There is a George Naylor in a family headed by Warner Naylor, age 50, (no wife), that I found in the 1850 Howard Co. Census. I can't read the age well, but I believe that it is age 13, which would make him a little young to be married in 1862:
https://sites.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/mo/howard/census/1850/137b.gif

Maybe the age is 18 on the census. He is close by Jane Wayland, who is found in the 1850 census at:
https://sites.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/mo/howard/census/1850/136b.gif

But, for some reason, she is shown as a male, age 16, "Joel D."

They had the following children:

  F i Katie NAYLOR 1 was born about 1864.

John Thomas GRIGSBY [Parents] was born on 12 Feb 1831 in , , Ohio. He died on 20 Feb 1897 in Landmark, Howard Co., Missouri. John married Mahala SWEARINGEN on 22 Jan 1852 in Fayette, Howard Co., Missouri.

Other marriages:
PARKER, Eliza

NOTE: B, p.26. In December 1992, I received an inquiry from a man identifying himself as the great-great-grandson of this man: Lester Powell, 2411 Garden Drive, Columbia, MO 65202-1290. Lester says that this man and his second wife, Eliza J., are found in the 1860 census for Moniteau Township, Howard County, Missouri, with his first four children. In the 1870 census is added Wilmuth, age 8. It is unknown who the mother of Georgia Ann is, but it is likely to be the first wife, Mahala, as John was born in 1831 and married Mahala in 1852 at age 21, and Georgia Ann was born in 1855, the third child and only 3 years after the marriage. There are other Grigsby's buried at Smith's Chapel Cemetary in Howard Co., MO who are unidentified by me: Henry N. Grigsby, "son of E.M. and P.D., died 5-7-1885, age 3 mo 5 da" Lawrence Grigsby, "son of E.M. and P.D., died 6-18-1883, age 3 da" Martha J. Grigsby, "dau of H.A. and M.R. died 4-2-1857 age 1 yr 9 da" Joseph E. Grigsby, "died 4-1-1879, age 16 yr 7 mo 25 da" Lawrence A. Grigsby, "died 7-14-1865, age 14 yr 1 mo 16 da" It is unknown to me who the H.A. and the E.M. Grigsby are. Perhaps sons of John Thomas.

The Howard Co. 1870 census has:
