The Grigsby's moved from Licking Co., Ohio to Howard Co., MO. around 1840.

Sarah Ann WAYLAND [Parents] 1 was born on 17 Sep 1812 in , , Virginia. She died on 13 Oct 1885 in , Howard Co., Missouri and was buried in Smith's Chapel Cem., Fayette, Howard Co., Missouri. Sarah married Thomas Addison GRIGSBY on 15 Apr 1828 in , , Ohio.

She is found in the 1860 Howard Co. census as Sarah Ann age 47, b. in Ohio. With her is husband Thomas, age 54, farmer, b. in VA, and the following Griggsby people (two g's): James N. 23, farmer, b. Ohio; Verrinda, 17; David D., 15; Albert, 12; Luther, 10; Margaret, 8; Robt., 4 (all of them after James were b. in MO).

Information on Sarah's father, Joel, shows that he moved to Ohio in 1826, and Sarah would
most likely have gone as well, since she was only 14 years old, causing them to have been married in Ohio.

They had the following children:

  M i Henry Arison GRIGSBY

Family info. from Bill Pitney, 2641 S.E. 75th Ave., Portland OR 97206.

Bill Pitney says that she died a horrible death when her clothing caught on a vertical shaft in a grain warehouse and she was beaten to death, as she was whirled around inside the shaft. She had gone to the warehouse to see two of the employees, a neighbor and her son, William McClure Pitney, the grandfather of the above reference. He also sent me copies of an old photo of Elizabeth and husband and family, and also her son William Pitney and his family. Elizabeth immigrated to Oregon with John Pitney in 1853, one of the pioneer families, and the Pitneys have lived there since.

They had the following children:

He is shown as "Alfred" on 1850 census at:

https://sites.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/mo/howard/census/1850/134a.gif (& 134b.gif)

Apparently died between 1855 and 1860 as his widow is shown in the 1860 census with the youngest child being age 4. In the 1870 census, she is living with son Joseph.

Ancestry.com marriage records has "Isman, Margaret E. married Wayland, Albert on 25 Mar 1841 in Howard County, Missouri." I don't know why her name is given as different for same marriage date. Perhaps she was a widow.

Margaret B. SMARR was born about 1824 in , , Virginia. She died after 1860. Margaret married Albert WAYLAND on 25 Mar 1841 in , Howard Co., Missouri.

NOTE: B, p.44,89. In January of 1993, I rec'd a letter from Robert L. Smarr, 600 S. Garth Ave., Columbia, MO 65203-3484, phone: 314-442-2525. He said that he was descended from Margaret's brother, John Henry Smarr, and said that his line goes back to Reuben Smarr, son of John Smarr of Virginia.
