George Washington WAYLAND [Parents] [scrapbook] was born on 28 Apr 1829 in Kenton Co., Kentucky. He married Nancy Ann BRANSTETTER on 2 May 1850.

Other marriages:
BARNETT, Nancy J.

See note under his sister, Lucy. George and his wife Nancy, both age 21, are with Lucy on the 1850 census. The note under Lucy calls him her "half-brother" and this needs to be investigated as I only had one wife for their father.

The below is a bio on George from "History of Hendricks County, Indiana 1885." I have a scanned copy of it, if anyone wants it.

George W. Wayland, dealer in books and stationery, and fire insurance agent, at Danville, [Hendricks Co.] Ind., was born near Visalia, Kenton Co., KY., April 28, 1829. His parents, Joseph and Catharine (Shaver) Wayland, were of German descent, and came to Kentucky in 1808. He lived with his parents until 1848, when he went to Independence and commenced to learn the trade of saddler and harness maker, working as a journeyman at the same place until 1851. He then engaged in the same business for himself till 1856 in Independence, when he removed to Lebanon, Ind., where he carried on the business until 1858, when he removed his business to Jamestown, Ind. In January, 1862, he changed from harness and saddlery to a general mercantile business. In December, 1861, he was appointed Postmaster of Jamestown by Montgomery Blair, which office he held until Jan. 1, 1865. In the following February he removed to Danville and worked at this trade as a journeyman in the harness shop of W.H. McPhetridge until October, 1865, when he established himself as a harness-maker and carriage-trimmer, which he followed till 1876, since when he has carried on his present business. In 1868 he was elected Coroner of Hendricks County for a term of two years. IN 1872 he was elected one of the School Board for a term of three years and was again elected in 1878.

He was married May 2, 1850, to Nancy Kelley, of Versailles, Ind., who died at Jamestown, Ind., Feb. 20, 1860, leaving three children---Lucy, wife of F.D. Roberts of Danville; Adelia, who died Feb 2, 1857, aged three years; Calista (Kitty) still at home, and Confucius Lane, of Seattle, Wash. Ter. Mr. Wayland was again married, Jan. 22, 1867, to Nancy J. Barnett, of Danville. He and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal church of Danville, of which he has been Class Leader nineteen years. He is now a Trustee, having held that position many years, and has been Treasurer for the Sabbath-school for the past fifteen years. He is a member of Silcox Lodge, No. 123, I.O.O.F., at Danville, of which he is Past Grand.

Nancy Ann BRANSTETTER [Parents] was born in 1849 in Ralls Co., Missouri. She died on 20 Feb 1860 in Jamestown, Indiana. Nancy married George Washington WAYLAND on 2 May 1850.

Other marriages:
KELLEY, Robert Voss

Received this second hand 11/99 from:

"Thanks for the info on Nancy Ann Kelley and her marriage to George Washington Wayland. Do you have a date and city where the marriage took place? She was married at one time to my g grandfather, Robert Voss Kelley. They must have divorced, because he also re-married a Hester Goodpasture around 1890 or so. Thanks......Rocky"

Got this from the same person first hand 11/99:

"Hi John.....I believe your looking for Nancy Ann BRANSTETTER. She married my g,g, grandfather Robert Kelley. Nancy was born in Ralls County Missouri in 1849. Her parents were Findley and Lucretia Branstetter. There are a lot of Branstetter's in Ralls County and even more Nancy's.

I've found a George Washington Wayland who was born in Ralls County in 1847. His parents were Alfred F. and Francis F. (Steven's) Wayland. The Branstetter's and the Wayland's may have been neighbors????

Robyn sent me the descendants of a George Washington Wayland born April 28, 1829. He married a Nancy Kelley in 1850. I don't think she was related to me.

My g, g, grandfather must have divorced Nancy Ann Branstetter Kelley, because he remarried a Hester Goodpasture about 1890. I believe Nancy was divorced from Robert and did not pass away, because I found an Annie Kelly on a plot of land in 1904 in Pike County, Missouri. Since Ann was her middle name,
maybe this is Annie???

I've been tracing my roots back to Maryland. There was a Moses Kelly, born about 1750 and he has quite a tree. I found a lot of Wayland's in his family.

Also, the name George Washington Wayland must have been a very popular name. I found one born Feb 1, 1851 and he died 5 days later in Versailles County, Indiana. The babies parents were John Bennett and Micha (Kelly) Wayland.

Of course I guess you know this already. I've also found George Washington Kelley's/Kelly's.

Hope this has helped. Tracing my Kelley roots has been rough. When I think I have something, it doesn't pan out. However, I have traced them from Maryland to Missouri to Oklahoma.

If I can be of anymore assistance, just let know.

Rocky Kelley
