George Washington WARMOUTH [Parents] was born on 22 Dec 1811 in Madison Co., KY. He died on 16 Jan 1886 in Halsey, Linn Co., Oregon and was buried in Union Point Cem., Halsey, Oregon. George married Sophia R. RUNYON on 9 Dec 1834 in Chariton Co., MO.

Received 9/99 from "Sharon A Foree"

"Hi, John, yes, George Wash. Warmouth who married Sophia Runyan in 1834 is my ancestor. I have his parents, etc. I was trying to gather more Warmouth info by posting the little I had on George's uncle Gethin/Guthings and seeing if anyone from that branch responded. Thanks for keeping in touch."

"John, here is a "power of attorney" found in Howard County, MO Deed Book 15, pg. 18, photocopied from FHC film 0963464. Background info: Elizabeth Page Warmouth was the mother of George W. Warmouth. Elizabeth had a brother John Page who died unmarried, childless and without a will in Sept. 1869. To
settle his estate, all of his siblings were considered and since Elizabeth had already died, then her children received her portion. Two of her sons went west, John Henry to California and George Washington to Oregon. They both sent back power of attorney to have someone still in Missouri act for them. What is great is that George W. chose Eli Wayland to act for him! When I first read this, I did not know who that was or why George would choose him. Now it makes sense. He would not choose his own sibling in MO, because that person would also be receiving an interest in the estate. So, he chose his wife's near relation!! Who better but the man who was husband to two of her sisters, as well as taking in her mother and younger sister!
This man was important in her family's life! To me that strengthens the claim that my Sophia Runyan is the same as the Sophia you show in your family. Sharon

Here is a transcript of the deed:

Know all men by these presents that I, George W. Warmoth of the county of Linn and State of Oregon, have made, constituted and appointed and do by these presents make, constitute and appoint Eli Wayland of the County of Chariton in the State of Missouri, my true and lawful attorney, for me and in my name, place and stead to receive and receipt for any and all moneys or property to which I am or may become entitled arising from the Estate of John Page deceased of the county of Howard in the State of Missouri; hereby
authorizing my said attorney for me and in my name to execute and deliver any release or other paper necessary and proper in connection with the estate aforesaid, as fully and completely as I could myself if personally present, hereby ratifying and confirming all that my said attorney may lawfully do by witness hereof. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 15th day of September 1870.

I received this email 2/00:

Dear John,

I have been browsing the Rootsweb and found you had information listed under George Washington Warmouth. My father was Noel Oliver Warmoth. His father was Oliver Warmoth, who was the son of James Madison Warmoth, the son of George Washington Warmouth, Sr.

George Washington Warmouth's was born on December 22, 1811 in Madison County, KY. He married on December 9, 1834 to Sophia Runyon. He died January 16, 1886 in Halsey, OR. His wife was born May 29, 1813 in KY and died on March 23, 1891 in Halsey, OR.

A lot of the information I got from this couple came from the cemetery. It was called Kirk Cemetery and is now known as Union Point Cemetery. Did you know that he was an ordained Baptist Minister and preached around the Halsey, OR area?

If you need any more information, or would care to share your information, please let me know.
I would very much like to know who George Washington Warmouth Sr's parents were ... I have guessed, but have no proof. I would also like to know more about the parents of Sophia Runyon and Sarah E. Sires.

Hoping to hear from you.

Alberta Warmoth Lowrey

Sophia R. RUNYON [Parents] was born on 29 May 1813 in KY. She died on 23 Mar 1891 in Halsey, Linn Co., Oregon and was buried in Union Point Cem., Halsey, Oregon. Sophia married George Washington WARMOUTH on 9 Dec 1834 in Chariton Co., MO.

See note under husband.

Henry L. RUNYON [Parents] was born about 1822. He married Nancy PARK on 14 Nov 1844 in Boone Co., MO.

Not known that he is a member of this family, and it needs to be proven. His marriage is on record in Boone Co., which is right next door to Howard and Chariton Co., MO

Nancy PARK was born about 1824. She married Henry L. RUNYON on 14 Nov 1844 in Boone Co., MO.

John David WINN [Parents] was born in 1758. He died in 1826 in Glasgow, MO and was buried Old Swiney (Sweeny) Graveyard. John married Eleanor HICKS in 1779.

I received this 9/99 from Beth Wilson :

The Winn family came to Howard County, MO from the Madison and/or Clark Co., KY area.

If you want a copy of the following, send the citation to the Howard County Recorder, they will charge for a copy.

Volume L, page 33

John Winn Sr., dec.
son-in-law Nathan Lowry of Madison County, Kentucky, wife Patsy Winn

This John may or may not be the same as the other one. There were several Winn couples in Howard County about that time.

On the KY Biographies site, at: http://www.starbase21.com/kybiog/fayette/gess.jw.txt
, it says that the name Winn was closely related with the early settlement of the area around Fayette Co. in this (my caps):

"HISTORY OF FAYETTE COUNTY, KENTUCKY, by Robert Peter, ed. by William H. Perrin, O. L. Baskin Co., Chicago, 1882. Reprinted by Southern Historical Press, Easley, SC, 1979.

JOHN W. GESS, deceased, was son of John Gess, who fought in the war of 1812, and was at Dudley's defeat, and of Annie (WINN) Gess, both natives of Virginia. He was born September 8, 1774; she, June 28, 1779; they were married January 19, 1800, in Fayette County, whither they had come when quite young. Their son, John W., born august 18, 1810, was a resident of the county during his lifetime. On December 18, 1832, he married Mary A., daughter of William and Lydia (WINN) Spurr. The names WINN and Spurr are closely identified with the first settlement of this part of Kentucky...Both now reside on the farm received from Government by their great-grandfather, Owen WINN."

The below [my caps] is from: http://www.starbase21.com/kybiog/nelson/winn.txt

"Taken from old clippings dealing with Kentucky family history, newspaper unknown. These clippings are about 100 years old (1997). Reprinted in Kentucky Explorer, Volume 10, Number 1 - May 1995. pp. 94-95. Nelson County.

Capt. Owen Winn, Capt. Thomas Winn and Edward Winn came over with the London Company in 1620, from Wales, the family there belonging to the nobility. The parish register of Middlesex County has these entries: Richard Winn, son of Richard and Sarah Winn, was baptized September 28, 1701; John, son of same, November 25, 1701; Thomas, son of Richard and Anne Winn, born March 5, 1716; Thomas Winn died October 10, 1716; Thomas Winn died October 10, 1716. Owen Winn died April 17, 1722; William Winn, Sr., died October 27, 1710. Richard and Sarah had Mary, born December 14, 1696, and Sarah, born January 17, 1798. March 1784, George Winn on Treasury warrant settled on 1,000 acres in Fayette County, Ky. Will probated in 1802, witnessed by Henry Cotton, John Winn and Hendley. Owen Winn, August 16, 500 acres on Stoners Fork. MINOR WINN, SEPTEMBER 1, 1786, 2,600 ACRES ON LICKING; SON DAVID, GRANDSON JOHN D. WINN. James Winn, 112 acres in Nelson County April 1, 1786. George and Lettice Winn had ten children. His sons were Thomas, Geoge, William and Adam. His daughters were the wives of Henry Cotton, John Hancock, Icholida Musick, Edward Brandley, William Herndon, John Hendley and Samuel Clay, of Bourbon County. William Herndon married Katherine Winn. He and his wife both died in 1850. They had five children, John Patrick, Henry George, Elijah, Elizabeth and Sallie. William Herndon came to Kentucky in 1800 from Charlotte County, Va. Capt. William Herndon of Lancaster, Ky., is his grandson and may know the Winn story. Isholida Musick, born in 1763, married Sally Winn. His daughter Nancy married Capt. James Duncan, soldier in 1812, who died in Elm Grove, Clay County, Mo., leaving a large family. Adam Winn was drowned in Kentucky River at the mouth of Elk Creek, May 21, 1826. John Hendley married Jemima Winn. Owen and Mary Cotton Winn had: Sarah Winn, married Boggs; Susannah, married --- Spurr; ELizabeth married William Vallandingham; Polly married --- King; Jane married Charles Grimes; Anna married John Gess; Lydia married William C. Spurr; Dora Winn married Aaron H. Young; Barbara Winn married Robert Bush; John Winn married Susanna Dulin; Nathaniel Winn. Mary Cotton Winn was the daughter of John Cotton of Nelson County. What kin was this John Cotton to Henry Cotton who married the daughter of George and Lettice or Letitia Winn? What was Letitia Winn's maiden name? I find beside those above the following marriage records in the Fayette County Court: Lucy C. Winn ad Joseph Gatewood; Willis Winn and Elizabeth Winn; James Winn and Mary D. ---; Jacob Winn and C. A. Sherman; Owen and Beorge B. Harrison; Lydia Ann Winn and James Clarke; Jesse D. Winn and Lucy Buckner; Rebecca Winn and George Clay. Where do these Winns belong? Owen Winn's will was probated September 8, 1805. William Davenport, Thomas Clarke and Charles Grimes witnesses. The above is from authentic records."

A "Graves" biography at the following site: http://www.starbase21.com/kybiog/kenton/graves.txt has:

"...The daughters married...Nathaniel Winn, George Winn...Their descendants are numerous, mostly in Kentucky and Missouri...Prominent among the grandsons of Bartlett Graves, now living, are...also the Winns of Missouri."

The above bio says " Minor Winn, September 1, 1786, 2,600 acres on Licking; son David, grandson John D. Winn." That would indicate that there was another John David Winn, or this man belongs under a different father...David. The John Winn Sr. above who had a son Minor may be this one.

I received the below email 1/00, which is very helpful (caps mine on my ancestor):

I was able to read the microfilm of the Howard county, MO Land records and found the deeds you told me about. I transcribed them word for word and thought you might like a copy, if you didn't have one already. They follow this note.
John Winn did not leave a will. The first mention of settlement of his estate is in the Probate Record book 1, page 20 "Monday, May 6th 1822 The administrations of the estate of John Winn deceased is granted to Paton Hurt and David Manchester upon their executing bond with Elisha Witt and William Hurt, their securities in the penalty of two thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs."
Then there are several reports by the administrators and the final accounting isn't recorded until May 1830. It will take some time to copy it all, but when it's done, I'll sent it to you. The best listing of heirs is the land record.

Hurt, Joshua -- "AN OLD RESIDENT. was born in Spartansburg District, SC, May 15, 1799. He will, therefore, be eighty years old on the 15th of next month. He came to this state (then a territory) in the fall of 1818, and settled in the northern part of Howard county, at a time when the Dennys, Coopers, Delannas and other of the first pioneers were in their prime. His first wife was a Miss. Denny, aunt of Col. A. F. Denny of Huntsville, with whom he lived thirty-six years.

"He removed to Randolph county about the year 1834, and settled near Mount Airy, where he resided for thirty-four years. Archilbald Rutherford, the Goodings, and a few others were already settled in the county when he arrives. Huntsville was in its infancy and contained only about a handful of inhabitants. He has witnessed the steady growth of the county from a wilderness, containing here and there a settlement, to a densely peopled, prosperous and progressive territory, with 25,000 people, numerous cities and towns and six million dollars' worth of property.

"In the fall of 1868, he moved to and located near Moberly, a part of his farm being within the corporate limits of the city. He has had three wives. His first wife (nee Denny) died in 1855, and after her death he made a visit to friends in Kentucky--the only time he has been out of the state in the more than sixty years of his residence in Missouri. He and his first wife had three children--only one os whom, the wife of Judge Wm. E. Walden, is living. Mr. Hurt is still vigorous, and with the exception of a slight deafness, is in full possession of all his faculties and senses. He has a rich fund of remininiscences of "ye olden time," some of which we will
endeavor to obtain for our 4th of July Review."; MDM Thursday 17 Apr 1879
