Peter FLEISCHMANN [Parents] was born on 10 Apr 1708 in , , Germany. He died in 1774 in , , Virginia. Peter married Maria Elisabetha BROYLES.

The four hundredth note in a series on the Germanna Colonies

The last note discussed the Second Colony in Germany and where the Barlows might be found. Going back to Virginia, there are three Barlow men who
appear to have been born early in the eighteenth century, Jacob,
Christopher, and Adam. Jacob and Christopher appear to be brothers and Adam
may be another brother or he may be a cousin.

Adam is known to have married Mary Smith because Michael Smith gave land to
his son-in-law, Adam Barlow. At the church there is a recorded baptism in
which Adam and Mary Barlow are the parents.

Christopher is known to have married Catherine Fleshman, the daughter of
Peter Fleshman and the granddaughter of Cyriacus Fleshman. Thus
Christopher's wife and Adam's wife were first cousins once removed. That Catherine was the daughter of Peter Fleshman comes from the estate
settlement of Peter. Participants in this were Adam Cook, Christopher
Barlow, Christian (Christopher) Reiner, all sons-in-law, who joined with
John and Peter Fleshman, sons of Peter Fleshman, Sr.

Maria Elisabetha BROYLES [Parents] was born in Oteisheim, Wurtemburg, Baden-Wurtemburg, Germany and was christened on 5 Jul 1716 in Oteisheim, Wurtemburg, Baden-Wurtemburg, Germany. She died in , , VA and was buried in , , VA. Maria married Peter FLEISCHMANN.

I have not seen proof that she is wife of Peter, but it is alleged.

This was posted 9/99:

"As far as I know, no one has really proven who the wife of Peter FLEISCHMANN
was. Some say she was Elizabeth BROYLES, others say Barbara TANNER -- but
no proof of either. The presumption of Barbara Tanner is made because 1)the
Tanner's were next-door neighbor's of the Fleischmann's and 2)several of
Peter Fleischmann's children bore Tanner family given names. I lean toward
Elizabeth Broyles but again, no real proof -- only conjecture."

I am a descendant of both the Yager and the Wilhoit/Wilhiet families. According to what I read in the Before Germanna monograph Number 10,
January 1990 by Johni Cerny and Gary J. Zimmerman, Nicholas YAGER (Nicolaus JGER) was married 11 May 1706 at Marienthal, Palatinate Germany to Anna Maria "Mary" SIEBER, daughter of Chritian SIEBER.

The Evangelical Lutheran Parish Register of Marienthal, Pfalz (Palatinate) gives the marriage record, showing parents names. It says that Paul Jger
was a resident of Meierspach (sic. Weichersbach) in Hessen and Christian
Sieber was a resident of Falckenstein at the time of Nicholas and Maria's wedding. Weichersback is about one and a half miles northeast of Mottgers by the Bavarian border almost due south of Fulda.

Nicholas Yager married second to Susanna CRIGLER widow of Jacob CRIGLER.
The authors of Before Germanna think that Jacob Crigler's wife Susanna may
have been Susanna Klaar who first married Joseph Weber.

Anna Maria SIEBER was born in 1684 in Of., Pfalz, Bayern. She died about 1734 in Virginia. Anna married Nicholas YAGER on 11 May 1706 in Marienthal, Palatinate, Germany.

Her father was Christian Sieber.

The information that Nicholas Yeager was married to Anna Maria Sieber,
not to Mary Wilhoite, can be found in Before Germanna, No. 10, May 1990,
by Gary J. Zimmerman and Johni Cerni. On p. 20 it says that Nicholas
Jager married Anna Maria Sieber in Marienthal, in the Palatinate 11 May
1706. As a source it gives the Evangelical Lutheran Parish Registers of Marienthal. Pfalz. It continues:

"The tradition that Nicholas Jager's wife was Mary Wilhoite, as reported
by Holtzclaw, is not substantiated by this record."

They had the following children:

  M i Adam YAGER
F ii Maria Barbara YAGER was born in 1709 in Germany and was christened on 19 May 1707 in Marienthall, Germany.
F iii Maria Gertraud YAGER was born on 18 Mar 1711 in Marienthal, Germany.
F iv Anna Maria "Mary" YAGER was born on 15 Nov 1714 in Marienthal, Germany. She died after 21 Apr 1763 in , Culpeper Co., Virginia.
F v Anna Margaretha YAGER was born on 14 Apr 1716 in Winnweiler, Germany.

Nicholas YAGER [Parents] was born on 28 May 1678 in Weichersbach, Hesse, , Germany. He died before 3 Apr 1764 in , Culpeper Co., Virginia. Nicholas married Susanna CLORE after 1734 in , , Virginia.

Other marriages:
SIEBER, Anna Maria

Nicholas Yager married second to Susanna CRIGLER widow of Jacob CRIGLER.
The authors of Before Germanna think that Jacob Crigler's wife Susanna may
have been Susanna Klaar who first married Joseph Weber.

Susanna CLORE [Parents] was born about 1692 in Gemmingen, Baden, Germany. She died after 6 Apr 1764 in , , Virginia. Susanna married Nicholas YAGER after 1734 in , , Virginia.

Other marriages:
WEBER, Philipp Joseph
CRIGLER, Jacob

on April 3, 1734, Susanna Crigler gave bond in
Spotsylvania County, as administrator of his estate. She later became the second wife of Nicholas Yager of the 1717 Germanna Colony. She last appears
in the records on April 6, 1764, when she deeds slaves to her two sons by
Jacob Crigler. (Reference - Mr. W. C. Barrickman and Dr. Arthur Leslie
Keith.) From a post by: Cindy Crigler [email protected]

John Blankenbaker says:

"There have been recent questions about Susanna Klaar (Clore) who married Joseph Weaver, Jacob Crigler, and Nicholas Yager. All three of these men had wives, at least at one time, named Susanna. Was it the same Susanna?

The evidence is circumstantial and not entirely strong. For example, Susanna Yager gave slaves to Crigler men which is evidence that she was married to Jacob Crigler. For the significance, genealogically speaking, of the question of the Yager marriage, this is enough evidence. The Clore - Weaver - Crigler connection is significant because the Clore connection establishes her ancestry and the Weaver and Crigler connection identifies her descendants.

There is most excellent evidence, of a very strong, albeit circumstantial, nature in the baptisms of the children of Christopher Crigler (who married Catherine Finks). A detailed look at the sponsors answers the question. These occurred at the Hebron Lutheran Church in the period 1751 to 1778.

During this time, the sponsors were usually chosen from siblings of the parents or from the first cousins of the parents plus the spouses of the siblings and cousins. Looking at the sponsors:

Andrew Carpenter. He married Barbara Weaver, the niece of Christopher Crigler. This is an exception to the sibling-cousin rule but remember that the Weavers were a little older than the Criglers so that Barbara was closer in age to Christopher than an uncle-niece relationship might indicate. The important point here is that she was a close relative from the Weaver family. On six occasions, Andrew Carpenter was a sponsor. On two occasions, Barbara (Weaver) Carpenter was a sponsor. These two, Andrew and Barbara, show that marriage was as good a bond as blood.

John Weaver. Similar to the previous, John was a nephew of Christopher. Three times, John was a sponsor.

Dorothy and John Clore. She married John Clore, a cousin of Christopher. She sponsored five children of Christopher. On six occasions, John Clore sponsored children.

Paul Leaderer. He was a sponsor to the child, Lewis. He married Margaret Clore, the cousin of Christopher Crigler.

Two of the sponsors defy classifications. Catherine Wayland is not a known relative and furthermore her identity is uncertain. A Catherine Clore is listed also but she is not classifiable; her identity is even uncertain.

Of the 31 sponsors for the first ten children of Christopher Crigler, 29 of them come from the Clore and Weaver branches. This is extremely strong evidence of the Clore - Weaver - Crigler connection.

The sponsors for the eleventh child, William, are another completely different story. Tied in to this question is the total lack of Finks related sponsors in the first ten children who are given above."

A.G.'s son, Edward (A140) is buried nearby in the "New Hebron Cemetary". Augusta Co. Va. Marriage Bonds show that bond was set for his marriage to Jane on 7 Jan 1830. A.G. (but not Jane as she died 1849) is found in the 1850 Augusta Co. Va. Census, Family No. 828, with three children. Mistakenly shown by Holtzclaw (A reference) to be son of Jeremiah (A82), as Holtzclaw did not know of his second marriage to Lucy Early. Dr. John W. Wayland said in 1934 that "In the same row with the three (Albert, wife & son Edward) are two graves marked with head-pieces and foot-pieces of locust slabs. They appear to be very old." These could be Albert's parents.

Jane Ledgerwood MOFFETT was born on 11 Dec 1811 in , , Virginia. She died on 26 Jul 1849 in , , Virginia and was buried in Hebron Presb Cem, Staunton, Virginia. Jane married Albert Gallitin WAYLAND Major on 7 Jan 1830 in , Augusta Co., Virginia.

NOTE: A, p.99; B, p. 85

The historian, John Walter Wayland's notes indicate that he found an obituary on William H., which says that he died unmarried after spending the last 32 years of his life in mining interests in New Mexico. It says also that he was a civil war veteran.

The National Archives has under "5th Virginia Infantry, Lee A. Wallace, Jr., page 168" the following:

"Wayland, William H.; b. near Swoope, Augusta Co.; farmer, age 18; enlisted April 28, 1861, at West View; Pvt., Co. F. Promoted to Sgt. Wounded (thigh) at Chancellorsville.
