State of Missouri County of Randolph
Be it remembered that on this 14th day of April, 1838, before the Dept. Clk. of the County Court of said County in Vacation William Fort and Thomas J. vi. NANCY MALINDA GORHAM, b. March 15, 1806; d. March 11, 1844; m. DR. JOHN JEFFERSON LOWRY, SR., May 01, 1821, Howard Co., Missouri; b. January 01, 1780, West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, US; d. June 12, 1863, Randolph Co., Missouri, US.

Notes for NANCY MALINDA GORHAM:
The good doctor married this girl when she was age 14 and he was age. Not too unusual in those days, but would get him in trouble nowadays. Back then, women had no occupational hope and marriage to a successful man was all that was important to the girl and her parents. Francis McFarland, preacher of the gospel, performed the ceremony. Hopefully love was in her heart. Another source gives her dod 14 Mar 1844, and marriage date as 1 May 1820. That was: "Old Families of Randolph County, Missouri"

Notes for DR. JOHN JEFFERSON LOWRY, SR:
John J. Lowry citizen of Co. died at Fort Henry, Rnd.Co. MO, on the 12th inst. He leaves many friends and relatives. He was brought to this Co. and interred on the farm of W. P. Jackson on the 15th inst.---Fayette Advt. PETITION OF

According to "Old Families of Randolph County, MO," by Howard Marshall, Col. Alexander Lowry of Pennsylvania is listed as the father of Dr. John Jefferson Lowry. However, upon researching Pennsylvania records (History of PA, Egle; Biog. Annals of Lancaster Co. PA), I find no mention of a son named John. Col. Alexander Lowry is well documented by the DAR and in Lancaster County and Pennsylvania State histories. Surely, if John was the son of Col. Alexander and was born in Philadelphia in 1780 (during the Revolution) he is not the issue of Alexander's marriage to Ann West Aldrick for it is stated in several reference that Alexander and Ann had only one child, Frances.
Given Alexander's age of 53 years in 1780, and that he had a son named Alexander, born 1756 by his first wife Mary Waters, it seems more logical to place John Jefferson Lowry as the son of this second Alexander Lowry, which would make him the grandson of Col. Alexander Lowry. As of Sept. 1998 it also seems logical that he is the son of William B. Lowry, Sr. (Lazarus and Ann Boggs) the half-brother of Col. Alexander Lowry. (As of 2-Dec-1998 I have received new information through e-mail that their is a biography of Millard Fillmore Lowry which states that he is the son of John Jefferson and Nancy Malinda and that his father immigrated to the US from Scotland. I have not been able to find this biography or confirm this statement.)
Of early record are two letters written by John Jefferson Lowry to the Missouri Gazette in St. Louis, Missouri Territory on October 8, 1816 and "March 3th 1817" and marked Fort Osage. (J.J.Lowry wrote many letters to newspapers during his lifetime.) We know that Dr. John J. Lowry was educated in Ohio, attending medical school in Cincinnati, and that the Missouri Gazette records his title as Dr. John J. Lowry, A.S.M. (letter dated Oct.8, 1816).
Fort Osage was built in 1808 and evacuated in 1813 during the War of 1812, then reoccupied by 1816. During the evacuation, the fort was removed to Arrow Rock and presumably when they returned to Fort Osage they took with them a thirty-two year old doctor by the name of John Jefferson Lowry. The Fort Osage letter places him in the fort, Missouri Territory during this period.

His occupation was doctor and he was a state legislator. Another source gives marriage date to Nancy Gorham as 1820

In 1826 Dr. John Jefferson Lowry was elected by the citizens of Howard County to the new state legislature in Jefferson City where he served for one and a half terms. He was recalled by the voters of Howard County for
supporting in a secret caucus a different state treasurer than had been appointed by the legislature.

In the 1850's John Jefferson Lowry moved from Howard County to Randolph County. Here he would live out the remainder of his life expressing his political views by letters to newspapers and to political friends in the
state. He died 6/12/1863 at Fort Henry, Randolph Co., Mo. "He was brought to this Co., and interred on the farm of W.P. Jackson on the 15th inst. Fayette Advt.", The Missouri Statesman, 6/26/1863.

Mary KIRKHAM was born about 1710 in England. She died in Virginia. Mary married John GORHAM about 1738.

A correspondent gave her maiden name, but did not give resource for this.

They had the following children:

  M i Thomas GORHAM
M ii John GORHAM was born about 1741.

Thomas GORHAM Jr. [Parents] was born in 1768. He died in 1833 in Howard Co., MO. Thomas married Sallie WILLIAMS.

Other marriages:
SUGG, Sarah W. "Sally"

Thomas served in the Rev. War in Loundoun Co., VA under Captain Richard Spurr, husband of Frances (Cotton) Spurr, who was the brother-in-law to Margaret (Cotton) Gorham. This was in a letter reportedly written by granddtr (but full of errors...for instance, she is talking about Thomas Jr.):

"...Thomas Gorham Sr. cross the line to Borentson Co. Tennessee, where he had two mills built on the Red River, lived there about seven years then moved to Howard Co.,MO in 1820. He came to Missouri in 18xx, [according] to land sales, and bought a good deal of land. He drove his cattle and horse with him and lived here 13 years. Then moved to Hirses Co. Mississippi and staid ther 3 years then moved to Louisiana where he died in Clairborn Parish. At the land sales on ____ he brought 8020 acres. When he moved in 1820 he brought 35 heads of cattle, 40 heads of horses and between thirty and forty negroes..."

This is the only evidence that I have seen that he moved out of MO and died in LA, and I am not sure that I believe it.

The reported letter from his dtr. also says that "...Thomas crossed the mountains on horseback and settled in Logan Co., Kentucky when the Indians were so bad. He was the first of the family to go to Kentucky where his father and brothers soon followed. He went in partnership with Mr. Dunn in a dry good store and they also entered land in partnership. He soon exchange his goods for land and lived on the farm. He married Miss Sallie Williams who died in a few months and then he married Miss Sara Childs and they had 12 children, six of whom died, Patsy, Thomas, Elizabeth, Simeon, Malinda, Tolman, Frances, Henry, and me, Mary Jane. Patsy married Dr. William Fort and they had seven children. Thomas married Miss Burvilla Burton and had five children. Malinda married Dr. John Lowery and had 12 children. Fannie married Robert Dysart and had 11 children. Tolman married Miss Martha Vivian and had one daughter named Frankie..."

I had his wife down as Sarah W. "Sally" Sugg, which other information says may be accurate. I'm not sure that this supposed letter is legit...things have been added to the typed supposed copy of the letter, such as dates after author was deceased. Names could have been added also...I'll accept it only after I see a scanned copy of the letter.

Another source says that Thomas Jr. had these children: Nancy Malinda, Toulman, Frances G., Mary J., Martha (Patsy) Frances Sugg, Thomas J. (which agrees with above letter).
