The book "Madison County Homes" relates that Robert lived in the old family house at the time of the Civil War. He served in the Company C, Virginia Calvary, under the command of Captain Morgan Strother. He was captured while visiting the Carpenter home place in January 1864 and imprisoned at Fort Delaware, the most infamous of Northern prisons. Bob worked in the kitchen there and managed to keep his friends from starving by dropping bread on the ground as he left the kitchen.
