His date of death is from his wife's widow's application. See her notes. He died from "paralysis and old age." He served in the 7th VA Infantry regiment. He made an application for a benefit for his service in the Confederate Army in 1925 at age 86. To see this application, go to: http://eagle.vsla.edu/conpen/virtua-basic.html

This is from the National Archives. 7th Virginia Infantry, David F. Riggs (leader), page 98:

"Wayland, James E., b. 1839? Student, enlisted 4/25/61 at Madison Court House in Co. A. as Pvt. To regimental band as musician 6/16/62, having served as a musician since 10/61. Madison Co. Marriage Reg. 1, p.11. James E. is listed as age 31 (he was actually only 22) and son of S.B. and M.A. Wayland. Caroline's age is not given (she probably refused, since she was about 25 (Census) and older than James), and she is listed as "C.M. Wayland, dtr. of A. and S. Wayland". Carrie is last child of second wife (Sarah) of Adam Wayland (A12), lineage following: (Adam, Adam, Thomas). Lineage on James is: (Simeon, John, Adam, Thomas). James. James's grandfather, John, was brother to Caroline's father, Adam. My computer tells me that Carrie and James were "first cousins, one generation removed", as well as husband and wife.

Carrie filed a widow's pension request as a widow of a Confederate veteran in 1928, giving her age as 91, almost 92. It is at: http://eagle.vsla.edu/conpen/virtua-basic.html

This was posted 8/99:

The 1850 census entry for Elliot Blankenbaker provides some useful
information. First, it identifies an additional child, Sarah P., who is
omitted in Vee Dove's list of Elliot's children. See Vee Dove, Madison
County Homes (Kingsport, TN: by author, 1975), p. 128. Second, it tells us
what the "E" in E. Finks Blankenbaker stands for. Third, it gives
birthdates for all but one of Elliot's children (the likely eldest,
Elizabeth, was married in 1845 and so not enumerated in Elliot's family).
Without further ado, here 'tis:

1850 U.S. Census (Free Schedule), Madison Co., VA, p. 89A, Family No. 432,
