B (my book), p.84:

Holtzclaw in "A" reference above lists descendants of Jeremiah on p. 101. I have obtained third hand a list of his descendants from one in the line, which gives more information, and that is given under the descendants. Holtzclaw was just guessing in adding Lucy to the list of Jeremiah's children, but I believe that she is not one. He also said he guessed and added "A.G. Wayland" but he is not a son of Jeremiah. I believe that A.G. is actually one and the same as Albert G. Wayland and that this is his second marriage...to Lucy Early in 1852. For proof, Dr. Wayland's notes state that he found Albert's grave in the Hebron Presbyterian Church cemetary, and his wife Jane, with dates. My book gives further information and I can be contacted for this.

Mrs. Swetnam's notes say that Jeremiah was a private in Capt. William Stevens Company of mounted Riflemen, detached from Third Regiment Virginia Militia, Orange Co., commanded by Capt. B.W. Pryor, which marched from Orange Co. on 31 Jan, 1814, joined at Hampton on 7 Feb 1814. He served until 7 May, 1814, and was allowed pay for 8 days going home a distance of 160 miles. This was the War of 1812.

In June of 1996, I received a letter from Rosser Lee Wayland (he goes by "Lee"), 319 W. Main St., Danville, VA 24541-2804. He enclosed a description of the cemetery where Jeremiah and his relatives are buried, with vital information, and also info from a Wayland family bible handed down in his family, earliest birthdate entry being 1832.

Mary RAMSEY [Parents] "Polly" was born on 15 Jan 1797 in VA. She died on 2 Nov 1857 and was buried in Rock Gate Cem., Crozet, Virginia. Polly married Jeremiah WAYLAND on 14 Jan 1819.

Nancy WAYLAND [Parents] was born in 1799. She married Jeremiah WAYLAND on 17 Jan 1860.

Other marriages:
YAGER, Eli

NOTE: A, p.88,102. Married second to cousin Jeremiah Wayland (439) when both in sixties, so no issue. Madison Co. Marriage Reg. 1, p.11.

James WAYLAND [Parents] was born about 1797 in , , Virginia. He died in Oct 1820 in , Mercer Co., Kentucky. James married Frances "Fannie" BURRIS on 6 Jan 1820 in , Lincoln Co., Kentucky.

NOTE: A, p.86-87

Date of birth unknown. Was head of household in Orange Co., Va. in 1816 and 1817, so was of age then. He died in Mercer Co. Kty. about 1820, soon after his marriage, with his estate being settled in 1825 by Nathaniel Burris, his father-in-law. He married Francis Burrus Jan 6, 1820 in Lincoln Co., Kty. Nathaniel Burris himself died in 1853 with his grandson, Hickerson Wayland as executor of estate. There is a Hickerson B. Wayland in 1850 Ohio Census, Hamilton Co., p. 130 at age 35 (see p. 76 of "B"), but he would have been born in 1815, which is too young to be son of James. Hickerson's wife, Jacobina is listed as age 40 (both resident teachers at boarding school). If Hickerson was sensitive about the age difference (she had previous marriage and son age 11), and was actually only age 30 instead of 35 as he said, then his birthdate would be correct for him to be son of James and Francis Burrus. With all of the other evidence tying them together, I think this is a good possibility.

Frances "Fannie" BURRIS was born about 1800. She died on 1 Jul 1875. Frances married James WAYLAND on 6 Jan 1820 in , Lincoln Co., Kentucky.

John WAYLAND [Parents] was born on 7 Mar 1838 in Batavia, Clermont Co., Ohio. He died on 14 Dec 1922 in Spencer, , Indiana. John married Anna KERR on 5 Jan 1870 in Batavia, , Ohio.

NOTE: B, p.77

The famous Virginia historian, author, and Germanna descendant, John Walter Wayland, left some unpublished notes which I obtained a copy of. He says in these notes that he met in 1921 with a John Wayland in Spencer, Ohio who reported that he was the son of Willam Wayland and Nancy Sellye (?), and grandson of Rosa (Rosina) Wilhoit. He says that he came to Spencer in 1873, was editor of the local paper, and stayed until 1893, when he went to Chicago. He stated that he was born in 1838 in Clermont Co., Ohio and had a son, Dr. Shipley Wayland of Chicago. I was later sent a short biography on John by his descendant, Harriet Wayland Allen. It says that in 1861 John enlisted in Company F, 59th Ohio Volunteers under Captain Fyfee and served until 1862 when he was honorably discharged due to a disability, but continued to serve with the Quartermaster's dept. for two more years. After the war he was at Higgensport for awhile and then went west and started a grocery business at Ellsworth and Hays City, Kansas during the building of the Kansas and Pacific Railroad. He returned to Ohio for two years, and then took a position as bookkeeper with a firm in Hartford, Conn. He then returned to Ohio and came to Spencer. He purchased the Owen County Journal, which he ran until May 1880.
He then purchased a stave and heading factory and was manufacturing at the time of the autobiography.

Anna KERR was born on 24 Feb 1849 in Batavia, , Ohio. She died on 27 Sep 1912 in Chicago, , Illinois. Anna married John WAYLAND on 5 Jan 1870 in Batavia, , Ohio.

Her parents were H.V. Kerr and Elizabeth Harrison, m. 5 Jan 1845 in Batavia. Her husband's biography says they had five children, but three survived.

They had the following children:

M i Shipley WAYLAND was born about 1872.

NOTE: B, p.77. Was a physician.
F ii Harriet WAYLAND was born about 1878.

Name is given as "Harriet Wayland Barnes Wagner" and perhaps she married twice to men named Barnes and Wagner.
  M iii William Kerr WAYLAND

Thomas FITCH was born about 1840. He married Harriet WAYLAND on 2 Feb 1858 in Batavia, , Ohio.

Harriet WAYLAND [Parents] was born on 25 Aug 1840 in , , Virginia. She died on 3 Jun 1879. Harriet married Thomas FITCH on 2 Feb 1858 in Batavia, , Ohio.

NOTE: B, p.77. Harriet Wayland Allen points out that this Harriet was born in Virginia, but that her parents lived in Ohio at the time. She suggests that the birth coincides with the date of death of her father's father and most likely the family journeyed to Virginia for this occasion and perhaps to settle the estate and she was born there.

A. M. DIMMITT was born about 1840. He married Ann WAYLAND.

Ann WAYLAND [Parents] was born about 1845 in Batavia, , Ohio. She married A. M. DIMMITT.

NOTE: A, p.94; B, p.78

NOTE: A, p.95; B, p.79

Very interesting background on this man in the "B" reference, p. 79. Says that he was a miller, as was his father and grandfather before him...Simeon (A42), John (A7), and perhaps even Adam (A4). It was on Crooked Run, a branch of the Robinson River, on the line between Culpeper and Madison Cos., on the Culpeper side. This John was born and died probably in one of these two counties. He was married in Madison Co. (Marriage Reg. 1, p.17), at age 41. Dr. John Walter Wayland talked personally with someone who knew this man and said that John was not large, but could carry a barrel of flour under each arm. He was bald, but had a beard past his waist. He was in the Civil War, enlisting in 1861, and serving two years in the quartermaster dept., Co. A, 7th Va. Inf., Kemper's Brigade, Pickett's Division. The place he lived was called "Waylandsburg", or "Wayland's Mill" for years, and he was reported to be also the postmaster of Waylandsburg. The mill was one of the largest in Virginia, five stories high, but is no longer in existance, built before 1740. There is an account book from the mill existing, entries back to John (A7). I drove past this place 7/98 and could not find anything from the road.

This is from the National Archives. 7th Virginia Infantry, David F. Riggs (leader), page 98:

"Wayland, John W., b. 1825? in Culpeper Co. 5 ft. 8 inches tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair. Miller. Enlisted 4/25/61 at Madison Court House in Co. A as Pvt. To regimental band 6/16/62. Discharged 7/27/62, overage. Re-enlisted 11/28/62 at Fredericksburg as musician in band. Present July/Aug 1864."
