Immigrant to Virginia prior to1720, Thomas Wieland and related lines

Jacob BROYLES [Parents] was born in Oteisheim, Wurtemburg, , Germany and was christened on 26 Mar 1705 in Oteisheim, Wurtemburg, , Germany. He died on 18 May 1763 in , Culpeper Co., Virginia and was buried in 1763 in Bromfield Parish, Culpeper, VA. Jacob married Maria Catharina FLESHMAN in 1727.

NOTE: Germanna Record No. Six, p.19

Came over with his father and was an adult when arrived from Germany, as he proved his own importation 2 May 1727. His 9 sons and 3 dtrs. and their lines are mentioned in the Keith work: "The Germanna Colony of 1717" (William and Mary College Quarterly, First Series, Vol. 26, pp.79-95, 178-195, 234-249).

Following quoted from John Blankenbaker's notes:

Henry Schlucter was born 7 May 1697. Before he was a year old, his father died on 13 Feb 1698. About three years later, Anna Barbara Schne married her third husband, Cyriacus Fleischmann on 5 May 1701. At this time, she was thirty-six years old. Two surviving children were born in this third marriage in Neuenbrg, the small village where Anna Barbara had lived her life.

1.Maria Catharina Fleischmann, b. 26 Jan 1704,
2.Hans Peter Fleischmann, b. 10 Apr 1708.

Anna Barbara was now forty-three years old. Her eldest son, John Nicholas "Blankenbaker" was twenty-six years old.

In 1717, Anna Barbara, her third husband, Cyriacus, and her seven children, and four grandchildren left for the new world, Pennsylvania to be more exact. Surprisingly they all seem to have survived the trip.

Maria Catherine Fleshman married (Hans) Jacob Broyles in Virginia. They had eleven children:

Adam Broyles, b. 1728, m. Mary Wilhoit,
Nicholas Broyles, b. c1730, m. Dorothea Crisler,
Cyrus Broyles, b. c.1732, m. Mary Wilhoit,
Jacob (Jacob 2) Broyles, b. 1735, m. Elizabeth Yowell,
Peter Broyles, b. 1737, m. Elizabeth Blankenbaker,
Catherine Broyles, b. c.1740, m. John Wayland,
Michael Broyles, b. Jun 1740, m. Elizabeth Klug,
Elizabeth Broyles, b. c.1740, m. Conrad Wilhite,
John Broyles, b. c.1745, m.1, Margaret ___, m.2 Frances ____,
Zacharias Broyles, b. c.1744, m. Delilah Clore,
Mathias Broyles, b. c.1746, m. Eve Klug.

The German history is courtesy of the research of Margaret James Squires. The Fleshman history I have taken from "Our Families" by Larry G. Shuck. Larry was assisted ably by Ardys Hurt.

As is often the case, not all researchers agree, and I would say that Peter Broyles married Elizabeth ____ (perhaps Finks) who was a stepdaughter of Zacharias Blankenbaker.

Peter Broyles, b. c.1745, m. Elizabeth ____ (perhaps Finks).

From Ancestral File (TM), data as of 2 January 1996.

Maria Catharina FLESHMAN [Parents] was born on 26 Jan 1704 in Neuenberg, , Germany. She died after 1771 in , Culpeper Co., Virginia and was buried in Bromfield Parish. Maria married Jacob BROYLES in 1727.

NOTE: Germanna Record No. Six, p.19; Keith, p.90. The English version of her name after she arrived was "Mary Catherine." The name Fleischmann is not unusual in German. It means "flesh" plus "man" or a butcher.

They had the following children:

  M i Adam BROYLES

  M iv Peter BROYLES
M v Michael BROYLES was born in 1740. He died in 1837.

Jacob SOUTHER [Parents] 1 was born about 1750 in , , Virginia. He died on 18 Sep 1841 in , Jefferson Co., Kentucky. Jacob married Catherine WAYLAND in 1776 in , Culpepper Co., Virginia.

Catherine WAYLAND [Parents] "Katy" 1 was born about 1753 in , Culpepper Co., Virginia. She died in 1821 in , Oldham Co., Kentucky. Katy married Jacob SOUTHER in 1776 in , Culpepper Co., Virginia.

Souther of "Jefferson County, Kty." selling 303 acres in Madison Co., to Michael Souther on Sept. 24, 1812.

B.C. Holtzclaw cites her death as occurring in 1821 relying on the titahables list. May 21, 1821, Mathias Weaver (her son in law) posted a bond as administrator of her estate in Madison Co., VA and an appraisement of her estate took place Oct 25, 1821. The final settlement of both her estate as well as that of her deceased husband took place June 22, 1831 from which the dod of 1831 is believed by some.

They had the following children:

Henry WAYLAND [Parents] 1 was born on 25 Mar 1754 in Madison Co., Virginia. He died in 1812 in , Orange Co., Virginia. Henry married Hannah FINKS about 1776.

His signature can be found on "November 2, 1785, Culpeper, Against assessment bill" at:

http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/d?relpet:0:./temp/~ammem_IBzd:

Henry bought 371 acres in Orange Co., Va. on Feb. 27, 1804 (Orange Co. D.B., p. 109). This is probably his initial move from Madison Co. to Orange Co. The location is listed as "Deepstep" in deed. Henry was a veteran of the Revolutionary War, Culpeper Co. Militia in 1781. See Germanna Record No. Six, p. 68 for listing of John and Henry and siblings. Henry appears constantly in the tithables of Culpeper and Madison Cos., Va. up through 1803, when he moved to Orange Co., Va. See Orange Co. W.B. (Will Book) 5, p.11 for order for his inventory Nov. 26, 1812. He is in Orange Co. tithables until his death. He was appointed surveyor of Madison Co. Aug. 9, 1793, probably the first surveyor the county had; James Barbour and Andrew Finks signed his bond.

He was called Joseph Henry Wayland by a descendant.

Hannah FINKS [Parents] 1, 2 was born about 1756 in , , Virginia. She died in 1841 in , Albemarle Co., Virginia. Hannah married Henry WAYLAND about 1776.

On page 44 of my book, I am note that Fountain Finks Wayland probably got his middle name from his grandmother, this Hannah Finks. Holtzclaw's theory is that she was a Finks.

Some time after 1829, Hannah moved to Albemarle Co. with her son, Jeremiah, where she died. Her will, dated March 21, 1838 and probated June 7, 1841 is listed in the Albemarle Co. W.B. 14, p.196, leaves a Negro to her grandson, Nathaniel H. Wayland of Mercer Co., Kty, who was underage, and her other slaves to dtr., Lucy Wayland, and son, Fountain Wayland.

Mary WAYLAND [Parents] 1 was born about 1765 in , , Virginia. She married Joshua YAGER in 1785.

Married Joshua Yager. See the Yager family history in Record No. 10. Children here are from Keith and Paul Sparks. She had a phenomenal number of children over 31 years, which is not impossible but is unusual.

Nancy MCDANIEL was born in 1773. She died after 1850. Nancy married Cornelius WAYLAND on 20 Aug 1803 in , Madison Co., Virginia.

NOTE: A, pp.87,88,102

May very well have been sister of his first wife, as it was fairly common in those days to marry a wife's sister after death of first wife. After the death of Cornelius in 1843, Nancy may have married a Brown and then he died, as a Nancy Brown is shown in the 1850 census, age 77, living with Cornelius' son, Wm.

They had the following children:

  M i Clement WAYLAND

George MACDONALD was born about 1765. He died before 1800 in , , Virginia. George married Margaret WAYLAND in 1791 in , , Virginia.

NOTE: A, p.89. Since he is not mentioned in will of father-in-law John Wayland, written in 1800, he was probably deceased by then.

Margaret WAYLAND [Parents] 1 was born about 1767 in , , Virginia. She died in 1823/1830. Margaret married George MACDONALD in 1791 in , , Virginia.

Orange Co. D.B. 33, p. 408 says that on Dec. 10, 1830 heirs of Margaret and husband George MacDonald, living in Kentucky and Indiana, deeded to their cousin, William Wayland (A85), 153 acres that had been left by John Wayland (A5) in his will to his daughter, Margaret McDonald. The deed shows the children on Margaret and George, who survived them. One reference gives husband's name as "McDaniel".

She is still living 1823 when she received payment (as Margaret McDonnold) from Matthias Weaver, admr. de bonis non of John Wayland. Dead by Dec 1830 when her heirs living in KY and IN deeded to thier cousin William Wayland land in Orange Co., VA left to their mother.
