Immigrant to Virginia prior to1720, Thomas Wieland and related lines

Fielding WAYLAND Dr. [Parents] was born on 1 Feb 1804 in , , Virginia. He died on 7 Sep 1838 in , Clark Co., Missouri. Fielding married Keziah CALLAWAY on 24 Nov 1831.

NOTE: B, p. 6,9,14

See "Missouri Pioneers", which has biography on Fielding. He is given title of "Dr.", as is Fielding (B19), so need to avoid confusion on this. His will is dated Aug. 29, 1838, so must have died slowly. He purchased land in Clark Co. on Nov. 8, 1833 (U.S. Land Sales, Vol. 1, p. 160). Also must avoid confusion between this Fielding and his older brother, Fielding, who died at age 9, a year before his birth. Willett Magruder of 76080 Zuni Rd., Indian Wells, CA 92210 has a silhouette reported to be of Dr. Fielding Wayland, made from life, which I have a photo of. He also has a letter from him when Fielding was in Fairfield, VA in 1824.

Land grants can be seen at:

Keziah CALLAWAY was born on 6 Jan 1816. She died in 1843 in Clark Co., Missouri. Keziah married Fielding WAYLAND Dr. on 24 Nov 1831.

Other marriages:
SNIVELY, Henry

NOTE: B, p.14

Keziah Calloway first married Fielding Wayland (B1) and then Henry Snively. Therefore, Clark Co. Marriage records show her as a Wayland marrying Snively.

There is a Stephen Callaway, age 38 on the 1850 Howard Co. Census, page 195a: https://sites.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/mo/howard/census/1850/195a.gif
May be a brother to Keziah.

They had the following children:

F i Martha Elizabeth "Matt" WAYLAND
  F ii Mary Isabell WAYLAND
  F iii Rachel Evaline WAYLAND
F iv Fielding Ann WAYLAND was born on 1 Nov 1838. She died on 6 Feb 1839.

Samuel Edwards BARTLETT 1, 2 was born in Mar 1800. He died in 1836. Samuel married Louisa Ann WAYLAND on 1 Feb 1824 in , Clark Co., Missouri.

There is a conflict regarding date of death. May be 1848.

Louisa Ann WAYLAND [Parents] 1, 2 was born on 10 May 1809 in , , Kentucky. She died on 22 Dec 1893. Louisa married Samuel Edwards BARTLETT on 1 Feb 1824 in , Clark Co., Missouri.

William S. WAYLAND [Parents] was born on 19 Apr 1801. He died on 3 Jul 1864 in , , Tenn.. William married Sarah HUFFAKER on 26 Jan 1834 in , Sevier Co., Tenn..

NOTE: B, p.82

It is conjecture that he is the son of Lewis. She has them marrying one year after birth of the first child and this may be an error.

The family can be found on the 1850 Sevier Co., TN census at:

http://c-23.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/archives/tn/sevier/census/1850/pg0433b.txt

The family is as here, except Harvey is listed as William H.
On that same page is a Phelix G. Wayland, age 21, wife Susanah, 2 yr. old son, Benja, all born in TN. I don't know who these could be.

Sarah HUFFAKER was born on 6 Dec 1798. She died on 28 Apr 1863. Sarah married William S. WAYLAND on 26 Jan 1834 in , Sevier Co., Tenn..

NOTE: B, p. 82

They had the following children:

  M i James W. WAYLAND was born on 24 Mar 1833. He died on 18 Feb 1864.

NOTE: B, p.82. According to these dates, was born nearly a year before his parents' marriage. This may not be accurate, and he may have been born in 1838, and the following may apply to him:

F ii Sarah E. WAYLAND was born on 28 Aug 1835. She died on 7 Sep 1894.

F iii Mary WAYLAND was born in 1838 in Sevier Co., TN.

NOTE: B, p.82

Joel WAYLAND [Parents] was born in 1817. He died in 1873. Joel married Isabel (Champ) DE CHAMP.

Grandson, Dr. Thomas Wayland, says that he was a school teacher.

Isabel (Champ) DE CHAMP was born about 1820. She married Joel WAYLAND.

They had the following children:

M i William WAYLAND was born about 1840.

The following is in the National Archives, and MAY relate to him (parentheses are mine):

"Wayland, William R., Pvt., Co. K, 19th Virginia Infantry, Herbert A. Thomas Jr. (in charge), 5/20/61. Hillsboro. Age 20. Present til admitted Ch'ville Hosp. 7/1861, measles. Returned 9/10/61; wounded 10/15/61 Fairfax C.H. (Court House); leg amputated below knee same day at Ch'Ville Hosp., discharged 2/9/62. Born Albemarle Co.; age 19, 5'6", fair complexion, blue eyes, lt. hair (light-colored), farmer (occupation at enlistment).
F ii Susie WAYLAND was born about 1845.
M iii Harvey WAYLAND was born about 1847.

Not known if it applies to him, but this was in the National Archives:

10th Virginia Cavalry
Robert J. Driver, Jr. (in charge)
Page 193

Wayland, H.H., Pvt., Co. 2(2nd) Conscript enrolled Albemarle Co., and sent to Camp Lee 4/8/64. Assigned 7/1/64. Present through 8/31/64. Issued clothing 12/31/64. NFR.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Anyone who enrolled late in the war, in 1864, was probably too young to enroll at the beginning of the war in 1861. With this Harvey's approx. year of birth of 1847, he would have been age 14 in 1861, and could not join until about 1864.

Also, there is an H.O. Wayland, b. 7 May 1849, d. 3 Jan 1914 buried next to Mary W. Wayland in the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery 8 miles west of Culpeper, Virginia on Route #29:
thence north .3 mile on Route #609 on west side of road. You can see this at:

M iv Jed WAYLAND was born about 1848. He died after 1939.

Noted to be still living in 1940.
  M v James WAYLAND
M vi John WAYLAND was born about 1855. He died after 1940.

He was noted to be still living in 1940.

George Thomas WAYLAND [Parents] was born on 4 Apr 1859 in Matoon, , Illinois. He died on 28 Dec 1940 in Ione, , California. George married Lillie May CLARKE.

His grandson says that he deserted the family while Clarke Elmer was just a small boy and the latter's resentment was such that he refused to even discuss that side of the family while he was still alive. Dr. Thomas Wayland has his date of birth as being 1850, saying he died in California a wealthy merchant.

Lillie May CLARKE was born on 7 Dec 1865 in East St. Louis, , Missouri. She died in Aug 1944 in Corte Madera, , California. Lillie married George Thomas WAYLAND.

NOTE: B, p.83

They had the following children:

  M i Clarke Elmer WAYLAND

Willis WAYLAND [Parents] was born about 1795 in , , Virginia. He died in Dec 1860 and was buried on 25 Dec 1860 in family farm. Willis married Betty SAUNDERS.

Other marriages:
HAYNES, Kathryn

NOTE: A, p.91.

"A" reference says that he witnessed sister Judith's wedding in 1810, and says that he may have been the husband of Amy Wayland, born 1811, who is shown in the 1850 census of Carroll Co., Kty, living with Russell Tandy, born 1821, a son of her sister, Sarah, but Amy was wife of his brother, William. A letter from his grandson says that Willis was in the War of 1812 and injured. It also says that he was born about 1779, which I think is too far back. It says that he was granted 320 acres in McDonough Co., Kty., for his service in the war, and bought another 320 adjoining acres. He is found in the Kty 1820 census Gall. 128 No Twp L, and in the 1830 Kty. census Gall. 166 No. Twp L. Vicki Maddox thinks that he m. Amy Tandy. With all of the confusion about this man, he may be two separate persons.

June 1998 I received a response to a letter I sent to Anne Wayland, wife of James Adams Wayland, b. 9 June, 1914, giving confirmation to his two wives here and info on the children and her husband's line.

"He married a woman by the name of Haynes in Kentucky, and was granted a tract of land in McDonough County as a bonus for his service in the War of 1812. This consisted of 320 acres near Fandon. He evidently had some money as he bought 320 acres adjoining at $1.25 and acre and paid cash for it.

He had 9 children living by Kathryn Haynes: John, born 1816; Garret, born 1841(?); Joel my grandfather, born 1817; Frank, born 1826 and wounded at Vicksburg in 1863; Betty, who married a Ferster, born in 1823; Elijah, born 1840, wounded several times in the Civil War and was said to be the best gambler of the United States Army. Judith, who married a McCormick. To the best of my records she was born about 1830, Loraine, born 1832, married a Brooking, Ella born 1836 and married a Champ.

His wife Kathryn Haynes died and Willis Wayland married a second time to Betty Saunders. Three children by this union are still living, Anna Wheeler living in Macomb is 89 years old, George Wayland living in California, and Lucy Wayland living in California. Our Rose Wayland, deceased, and Jerry Wayland, deceased. Willis died in 1860 and was buried on Xmas day on the farm that he owned. I could take you to the sight of his grave although there is not marker standing.

Joel Wayland, my grandfather, had several children, William, John who is living, Susie, Harvey, James my father, and Jed who is still living. My father James lived in Macomb or immediate vacinity practically his entire life. He ran a seed store in Macomb and died three years ago. I'm sorry I can give you no information concerning the McCormicks but would appreciate any information you could give me on this side of the family."

Betty SAUNDERS was born about 1820. She married Willis WAYLAND.

Children may not be in order of birth.

They had the following children:

F i Rose WAYLAND was born in 1847. She died in 1924.

Never married.
M ii Jerry WAYLAND was born in 1852/1853. He died in 1891.

Notes say "nothing known, went to Missouri." Birth given both as 1852 & 1853.
F iii Lucy WAYLAND was born about 1854. She died in , , California.

Lived in St. Louis, MO for awhile. Note says "taught George W. Carver (?) to read as a child."
  F iv Anna WAYLAND
  M v George Thomas WAYLAND

Clarke Elmer WAYLAND [Parents] was born on 1 Feb 1895. He died on 9 Jan 1973 in San Francisco, , California. Clarke married Adele Camille CAILLAUD on 14 Jun 1924 in San Francisco, , California.

NOTE: B, p.83

Lewis WAYLAND [Parents] was born on 23 Apr 1786 in , , Virginia. He died after 1850. Lewis married Mary Chastine PORTERFIELD before 1820.

NOTE: A, p.80, 97; B, p. 83

Holtzclaw (Reference "A") is in error guessing that this Lewis was son of Lewis (A10); he is son of Joshua (A9), according to my deductions...see B above.

Jane Crouch Williams came to a similar conclusion. She says that this Lewis is sometimes referred to in Madison Co. records as "Lewis Wayland Jr." to tell him apart from Lewis (A10), who lived in the same county, but this did not indicate that he was his son. He is named for his uncle. It was a German custom to name a son for a brother of his father before a son is named for his father. Vicki Maddox has DOB the same but month as Sept.

There are 6 federal land grants for Lewis, 1839 and 1850 at:

http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/

Mary Chastine PORTERFIELD was born on 10 Jun 1789. She died on 16 Apr 1852 in , , Virginia and was buried in Tinkling Sprng C, Augusta Co., Virginia. Mary married Lewis WAYLAND before 1820.

NOTE: A, p.97,98; B, p.83

Buried in Tinkling Springs Cemetary. Stone erected by children.

They had the following children:

  F i Rebecca R. WAYLAND was born in 1825.

NOTE: A, p.98. Also, there is a Rebecca R. Wayland in the list of 1841 Augusta Co., VA marriages online, but could not access database (cost).
M ii Robert Porterfield WAYLAND was born about 1827.

NOTE: A, p.98; B, p.71

Unknown if the Robert P. Wayland of same age in Scotland Co., MO. 1850 census (B223) is same as A136 of same name. This MO county is next to Clark Co., where many of Joshua's sons settled. Robert would have a lot of uncles and cousins to relate to. Peculiar that he was living alone and farming. His land was worth much more than others around him..$5,000 at age of 23.

The federal land office has him purchasing land in Scotland Co. 1850:
