George UTZ [Parents] was born about 1742. He married Margaret WEAVER.
Margaret WEAVER [Parents] was born in 1742. She married George UTZ.
According to Germanna Record No. 6, she married John Wilhoit, son of the immigrant, Michael Wilhoit. According to Clifford W. Michaels Jr. line, she married George Utz, as listed here. I will investigate further, possibly both are true.
They had the following children:
F i Rachel UTZ
Joseph Franklin WAYLAND Dr. [Parents] was born in 1823. He married Emma S. R. MCCULLOCH on 9 Feb 1847 in , Clark Co., Missouri.
NOTE: B, p.9,12,19
Found with father in 1840 Clark Co., Mo. Census. Listed separately in the 1850 Clark Co. Census, p. 271B, age 27, occupation physician, simply as "Franklin Wayland", so he went by his middle name. With him is wife and two children. The Clark Co. marriage record shows him marrying date indicated. An article in a local Clark Co. newspaper, which I have copies of, tells of the early days of the family of Jeremiah (A52), and states that Franklin made 79 visits to his Uncle Jeremiah's home to treat them in the 11 months ending in August of 1850, billing them 50 cents a visit (plus medicine), for a total charge of $39.25 (perhaps a cut rate for relatives). These bills are still in existance in the family.
Emma S. R. MCCULLOCH was born about 1824 in , , South Carolina. She married Joseph Franklin WAYLAND Dr. on 9 Feb 1847 in , Clark Co., Missouri.

First school teacher in Clark Co., MO. Beatrice Wayland said in a letter that after Joseph's second wife died (her ancestor), he came back to Kentucky. "My branch were of KY, and mama visited my grandfather Israel when she first married. He had a second wife also, as did my father, so there are just lots of Waylands."
Joseph is listed on p. 392 of the 1810 Augusta Co., Va. Census, where he moved as a young man to be near his uncle, Lewis (A10), instead of going to Kty. with his father. He is found in the 1830 Marion Co., Mo., p. 31, next to his brother, Jeremiah (A52). He is not found in the later Mo. censuses, because he moved to Kty. The male under age 5 in the 1830 Census is George, age 1 year. The 1830 Census lists 6 sons and 2 dtrs. The 1850 Kenton Co., Kty. Census lists Joseph Wayland, age 68, farmer, b. in Va.; Nancy Wayland, age 50 (she would be older according to birthdate); Jeremiah, age 16; and Joseph, age 7. Nancy's birthdate may be more like 1800, according to these ages. There are also two families headed by George and Richard Wayland in the same county, and although the connection is not known, they are likely the sons of Joseph, and I have put them on his line. Records copied from family bible gives his birth date as 11 Sept 1784, according to Willett Magruder, 76080 Zuni Rd., Indian Wells, California 92210. He says that the bible is now in the Filson Club, Louisville, Kty., but used to belong to his mother. Joseph is also found in the 1820 Kentucky census, Camp 128 No Twp L
In Jan 1994, I received correspondence from Vicki Giles Maddox, 16138 Skunk River Rd., Burlington, IA 52601. She does not believe that the Joseph in the Mo. census is the same as this one. She says that the 1820 Kentucky Census "Camp 128 No Twp L" has Joseph & John & Willis Wayland. She says that the 1830 Kentucky census "Camp 256 No Twp L" lists Joseph along with John, Joshua, Wesley and Willis Wayland. She gives Joseph's date of death, stating that she has the will (a copy I presume) of Joseph, and he makes "his mark" which indicates that he was illiterate. She states that the Joseph found in Missouri Census of 1830 was not this Joseph, as he was found in the 1830 Kty census. She also says that the Joseph in Missouri was a school teacher and therefore could not have been illiterate. Ms. Maddox does not list Alfred as a child, but gives these children of Joseph with birthdates: Lewis 1812, Lucy 1813, Richard 1817, George 1811 or 1829, Israel 1825, Jeremiah 1834, and Joseph Jr. 1843. I am asking for a copy of Joseph's will which she has. These last children would be too old for his wife to have borne them, unless her age is given wrong, which I suspect it may be. She gives his DOD as Jan 1857, and adds the daughter Lucy, whom I did not have. She also leaves out Alfred as his child and puts Israel and George under the first wife, adding a Joseph and a Jeremiah as being children of his second wife. If my death date is correct for first wife, Israel and George could not be her children.
In 4/98, I received this email note, "I received a copy of a page from a Rest Haven Cemetery record, published by the Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Public Library in 1977, which indicates that Joseph Wayland died on 15 November, 1851." This was from: "Randy E. Roberts"
, Curator of Special Collections and University Archivist. He also says that according to an 1850 census record, Joseph Wayland was a postmaster at Edinburg, Blue River Township, Johnson County, Indiana. Unknown who this is. In 1995, I received a letter from H. Howard Stephenson, 789 Puuikena Drive, Honolulu, HI 96821-2512. His notes said about Joseph, "According to the 1810 census, he lived in Augusta Co., VA with his wife (between 16-26) and one other free person in household. He is listed in the 1820 and 1830 censuses in Campbell Co., KY. In 1840, his residence is listed in Kenton Co., KY. According to the Oct 7, 1850 census, Joseph was postmaster of Edinburg, Blue River Township, Johnson Co., Indiana; confirmed Rest Haven Cemetary, Ft. Wayne, IN. Beatrice Wayland English Smith says he died in 1853."
Beatrice says in a letter she wrote in 1937: "Joseph was, with some brothers and sisters, the first white family in Clark County, MO. They came here more than a hundred years ago and he was the first school teacher in the county. This is quoted from the histories of Missouri and I also get it from some of the Waylands in that part."
Joseph's death is given as 15 Nov 1851 by another person. Beatrice Wayland English Smith states that he died in 1853.
Pittsburge State Univ. source says "According to the 1810 census, he lived in Augusta County, VA, with his wife (between 16 and 26 years of age and 'one other free person in household.' He is listed in the 1820 and 1830 censuses in Campbell County, KY. In 1840 his residence is listed in Kenton County, KY. Background of Rowland/Roland name: This name is not unusual, in all of Europe. In its different forms, it is present in almost, if not all countries of Europe. Its origin may not be unusual in many of its forms IE. Nancy MASSIE was born on 5 Mar 1779. She died in 1831. Nancy married Joseph WAYLAND after 1823.
Idora Wayland's notes has her marriage to Joseph as being 1832, others 1823. Vicki Maddox says that it that is way off and it was in 1850. Since she gives her age as 50 on the 1850 census, and has young children on that census, I have to wonder if the age is wrong or if the children are not hers...perhaps those of a relative.
In 11/99 the following was posted by Maxey Sumlin
: "I found my Edmund Massey living with his daughter and son-in-law, Joseph Wayland, on the 1840 census of Kenton Co., KY. Any information on where Joseph married Sarah Massey would really be appreciated."
They had the following children:
M i Israel WAYLAND M ii Jeremiah WAYLAND was born about 1834. M iii Josiah WAYLAND was born about 1828.
This was sent to me in 1/00, and may relate to him:
I am interested to find and learn more about the Wayland sisters who married the MASSEYS.
I have a Mary Massey married JOSIAH WAYLAND in 1847 Grant Co., KY.
Sarah Massey married RICHARD WAYLAND in 1840 Grant Co., KY.
I can not find Josiah and Mary after 1850, where did they go and the children? I have a bit on Richard and Sarah in Kenton Co, KY in the 1850 Federal Census and some children thats all. Where did they all go?
Mary and Sarah's younger sister, Eliza Jane Massey married Christopher Clark Johnson in 1848 in Grant County, KY, the bondsman was Josiah Wayland. Eliza Jane and Christopher are my ancestors. Thanks

NOTE: A, p.79,97; B, p.6,8,9,12,81
Family information, which appears to be very accurate, listed the two children who died in childbirth and whose graves were later found. This information does not list the three youngest children with Abraham in the 1850 Census, and I therefore do not think that these are his children. Most likely, they are the children of a relative who died, such as Joseph (A47). In his household (in addition to children listed as his) were: Rachel Ann Wayland age 15, female, Jeremiah Wayland age 11, male, and "Burrows Al" age 5, male. Vicki Maddox says that she had heard that his second wife was Evaline Wayland (possibly B17) but no evidence of this.
He apparently bought much federal land, if he is the one at the site:
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/
Bureau of Land Management for the Fed. Govt. has many purchases for an Abraham Wayland, beginning in 1831 in Clark County.
He may have been in the War of 1812, and that gave him some federal land. I did not know that he was in Ky, and this may or may not apply to him:
"ABRAM WAYLAND
9 REGIMENT (SIRALL'S), MOUNTED,
KENTUCKY VOLS. WAR OF 1812"
Evaline Hopkins VAN LEAR was born in 1801. She died in 1864. Evaline married Abraham WAYLAND Dr. in 1821.

Dr. John Walter Wayland found in 1928, "in the old McDowell graveyard above Fairfield in Rockbridge Co., Va." the two small tombstones for B12 and B13. This would indicate that Abraham and his family left Va. no sooner than the death of the infant, Fielding, most likely in the Spring of 1929, when the roads were passable. Abraham and family are found in the 1830 Augusta Co.,
Va. Census, p. 50, but not in later Va. Censuses. They are found in the 1840 Clark Co., Mo. Census, p. 335; and the 1850 Clark co. Census, p.240B. Ages given on these Censuses coincide with known children listed, except that there is an extra child under age 5 on the 1840 Census, in addition to Jeremiah, so may have been another child who died in infancy. The 1850 Census also shows an additional name, "Burrows Al", 5 yr. old male, who is probably a boarder, due to the last name of Burrows and the fact that Evaline would have been age 44 when he was born. There were those with this name. Francis Burruss was the wife of James Wayland (A83), and Bettie Wayland (B153) m. Burroughs.
They had the following children:

Dr. John Walter Wayland found in 1928 in the "Old McDowell graveyard above Fairfield in Rockbridge Co., Va.", the stones for Fielding and his sister, Louisa, giving names and dates. Jeremiah WAYLAND [Parents] 1, 2 was born on 29 Jun 1796 in , , Virginia. He died on 19 Feb 1883 in , Clark Co., Missouri. Jeremiah married Nancy Jane BARTLETT on 4 May 1822 in , Daviess Co., Kentucky.
Jeremiah Wayland (Joshua, Adam, Thomas), b. 29 Jun 1796 VA, d. 19 Feb 1883 Clark Co., MO. He was one of the first settlers in Clark County. He had many interesting encounters with Indians, and (being a preacher) is said to have married Capt. Clark of the famous Lewis and Clark expedition in Jeremiah's home. Jeremiah and Francis Church planned the first town in Clark County, St. Francisville. Jeremiah built the first church, and his son, George Haywood Wayland, was the first white child born in the county. Joseph Wayland was the county's first teacher. See the excellent biography of Jeremiah, written while his wife was still alive, on pp 976-978 of the "History of Clark, Knox, and Scotland counties, Missouri", pub. in 1887. He is listed in the book of early land grants, vol. 1, p.54, as purchasing land on Dec. 23, 1829. Jeremiah is listed in the 1830 Marion County MO Census, p. 31, along with brother, Joseph (A47). He is listed on p. 333 of the 1840 Clark County, MO Census, and also on p. 287 of the 1850 Clark County Census. He didn't move; the county changed names.
Jeremiah in 1806, at age 10, emigrated with his parents, Joshua Wayland and Rachel Utz, from VA to KY. His father probably obtained land in KY on a veteran's land grant, as he was in the Rev. War. Jeremiah matured on his father's farm near Smithfield in Shelby Co., KY, where he taught school for several years. On May 4, 1822, he married Nancy J. Bartlett in Davies Co., KY. Nancy was b. 25 Mar 1803 Elizabethtown, KY, and d. 16 Jul 1890 in Clark County. Jeremiah tried farming in KY, but decided to try the better land in Missouri.
Traveling with Jeremiah were his family and his two brothers-in-law, Samuel Bartlett and George Haywood, according to the above biography. Not only did Jeremiah marry a Bartlett, but his sister, Louisa Ann Wayland married Samuel Bartlett. It is not known how Haywood is a brother in law, as the husbands of all of Jeremiah's sisters are recorded, and he is not one of them. The immigrants remained in Palmyra, MO for a year and the men found suitable land on the Des Moines River adjoining what was to be St. Francisville in Clark County in the Fall of 1829. They built log houses and then sent for their families. Jeremiah's brother, Joseph, is not mentioned in the biography, but he must have accompanied them or followed very soon after, as both are listed together on the same page of the 1830 census, Marion Co., MO, p. 31. Clark Co. was formed from Lewis Co. in 1836, which had been previously formed from Marion Co. in 1833, so they never moved.
Jeremiah was a Baptist lay preacher and a justice of the peace. He secured the estate of his brother-in-law, Samuel Bartlett, on May 29, 1840, along with his brother, Abraham, and George Haywood. The deceased's wife, Louisa Wayland, was the administratrix. On Mar 20, 1848, he secured the will of Jeremiah Riley with William Bartlett the guardian of the estate. Jeremiah's son, Lewis, married a Riley. Jeremiah secured, along with his brother, Julius, the will of their brother, Dr. Fielding Wayland. Fielding's will was dated Aug. 29, 1838, and the will was probated on Feb 25, 1843. Abraham and John Callaway were executors of Fielding's estate, and William Bartlett was one of the witnesses.
Jeremiah was executor, along with Henry Snively, of Julius Wayland's will, dated June 24, 1846, L/T being granted to Jeremiah on Oct 27, 1846 regarding Julius' will. Abraham both witnessed and secured Julius' will, and Joseph F. Wayland also secured it. Jeremiah is also listed as administrator of the estate of Paschal Wayland on Apr 5, 1853. Paschal (unknown relationship) died intestate (without a will), and the estate was secured by William Bartlett. All of the above will information was taken from volumes of the "Missouri Pioneers."
Jeremiah is listed in the book of early land grants as purchasing land on Dec. 23, 1829 (Vol. 1, p. 54). On the same date, Abraham purchases land, but there is a good chance that Jeremiah bought it in his name and that Abraham came months later. Jeremiah is buried in Wolfe Cemetary in Clark Co., along with his mother, Rachel, and his sister, Louisa Ann, and his brother, Fielding.
An article in the local paper "The Media", Kahoka, MO in 1966 tells of the early days of this family. Jeremiah hunted wolves and had a very fast mare which could outrun any wolf. He and his hounds killed 35 wolves in one season. The story tells of George Biggs, the second husband of Jeremiah's sister, Louisa Wayland Bartlett, chasing a wolf on horseback until the wolf tired. There was a foot of snow in the ground, and not wanting to waste a bullet, George removed the iron stirrup from his saddle and swung at the wolf. The saddle turned, dumping him on top of the wolf. A life and death struggle ensued, and ended only when Biggs (a large man) managed to hold the wolf by the throat with one hand and open his knife with the other hand, using his teeth, and killed the wolf.
Jeremiah and his family had good relations with the Indians of Clark County, which were of the Sac and Fox tribes, both led by Chief Black Hawk. During the Black Hawk War of 1832, the pioneers sent all of their women and children to Tully, a town near Canton, and the men worked the fields carrying guns. The pioneer men then all moved to Fort Pike, which was built in St. Francisville as a defense against the Indians, and waited for the Indians to attack, but they never did. When Chief Black Hawk was captured, they moved back to their cabins, and Black Hawk's squaw lived with Jeremiah until he was freed.
The news article states that one night in 1832 (maybe before the war?) an Indian and his squaw were staying with Jeremiah and his family. During the night, they heard a terrible noise and the Indians jumped up and siad that a terrible calamity was about to occur and rode off on their horses. Jeremiah and his family left also, and later that night their log home was swept away by the river. The noise that they heard earlier was the sound of the ice breaking on the river. Jeremiah replaced the log home then with a brick home, built about 1832, which is still standing.
