Lawrence Settle:14 Oct 1909--ANOTHER OLD CITIZEN--The Advertiser this week gives something of the life of one of our most esteemed and aged citizens, "Uncle Jack" Settle as he is familiarly called. "Uncle Jack" is not as old as a few others in this county, but he is a native, and has spent his entire life among our people, an dis highly
esteemed by all who know him.Our subject's name in full is John Lawrence Settle. He was born in Franklin township, this county, on his father's farm, near Maxwell's Mill, April 28, 1831, hence will be seventy-nine years of age next April. His father's name was Martin Settle, who had a family of eleven children, and "Uncle Jack" is the tenth child. His
brother, Mack Settle, of Moberly, and sister, Mrs. Sallie Dudgeon, and himself are the
only surviving members of the once large family.On May 26, 1853 John Lawrence Settle was married to Miss Martha Franklin Dudgeon, daughter of the late Alex Dudgeon. To them two children were born, W. D. Settle, now county clerk, and Jeff D. Settle, our popular deputy postmaster. Mr. Settle farmed all his life until 1904, when he removed to Fayette, and has been one of our most respected and esteemed citizens since. He and his entire family are members
of the Christian church. His good wife is four years his junior.Mr. Settle says he can recall but three now living who were schoolmates of his in his boyhood: Mrs. Tom G. Deatherage, Mrs. W. H. Collins, and Barney Collins. The Advertiser is glad to state that "Uncle Jack" and his estimable wife are both in good health, and we trust they may live to enjoy each other and their
children a number of years yet."
